If you`re using your wet-dry vac to clean a dry surface, check that the filter has been correctly placed. You`ll need it—the filter prevents dust from blowing out of the top while you`re cleaning. For wet surfaces, however, you`ll need to remove the filter entirely.
The filter can be washed and, if dried properly, reused. Changing shop vac filters often is strongly recommended to increase the vac`s performance and to help extend vacuum life as it protects the motor from harmful dust and debris. The 1-layer standard filter fits all RIDGID wet/dry shop vacs 5 Gal.
The replacement filter can be washed and, if dried properly, reused. Changing shop vac filters often is strongly recommended to increase the vac`s performance and to help extend vacuum life as it protects the motor from harmful dust and debris.
You should replace your shop vac filters when you notice any rips, tears, or stuck-on stains from paint or other debris on them. When dust and other particles escape the filter, they can clog your unit and cause your shop vac to lose suction.
If you`re vacuuming water, you should take away the filter. Some models will allow you to utilize one specially made for wet cleaning, but only if you`re dealing with a little liquid. In that case, don`t forget to rinse it later and leave it to dry.
Since the filter is made of paper, you can clean it with water, but you should let it completely dry before reuse. You can also stock up and save by purchasing this filter in a two-pack. Want a pro tip?
With the filter removed, the water system will continue to operate, bypassing the filter, and the clogged filter will not cause slow water dispensing or low ice production. However, to have filtered water, you will need to install a new filter.
Can you clean a HEPA filter? If your HEPA filter is not specifically labeled as washable or “permanent,” then the answer is no – while it may still filter the air it will have reduced effectiveness after washing.
HEPA filters are also not designed to be washed. Washing a true HEPA filter can easily damage it so that it can no longer filter properly. Plus, the amount of particles washing it will remove will be low anyway.
Most manufacturers recommend you change your filter on average every 3-6 months. However, it is recommended to change your filter even earlier depending on usage and allergy care.
Mimi Hoang, a product manager for Black + Decker Home Products, emphasizes the importance of cleaning your vacuum filters: “Clean filters maintain strong suction and help pick up dirt and debris effectively. Filters that are clogged may severely impact a vacuum cleaner`s performance.”
Failing to replace a filter means you won`t get the same high-quality water filtration, and you`ll also be at risk of drinking water that`s contaminated with bacteria and other contaminants that have leached into your water from the degraded filter media.
Without the bag the fine dust will go through the filter and blow back into your room. Vac with a HEPA cartridge filter: You do not need a collection bag. Vac with a foam sleeve: Some of our smaller vacs come with a foam sleeve and a collection bag. For these vacs, you must use the collection bag with the foam sleeve.
Filters are for one use only. After three months or so, you`ll have to change it out for a fresh one. The only exception is reusable air filters. These washable filters are made out of more durable materials and can be cleaned.
Use the Shop-Vac® Foam Sleeve for picking up wet messes when used alone. The Foam Sleeve is also required when using reusable dry filters. The approximate size of the foam sleeve is 8 inch diameter and 6.5 inch high. The foam sleeve is required unless you are using a cartridge filter.
Generally, high-performance dry filters can catch up to 99% of the incoming contaminants due to the smaller micron size of the filter media, while oiled filters catch about 98% of what passes through – a minute difference, but a difference none-the-less.
ULPA Filter Vacuum

So, if you`re looking for the absolute best in indoor air quality, vacuums with ULPA filters are the best on the market. ULPA stands for `ultra-low particulate air,` and vacuums with these filters are perfect in environments that demand an extremely high standard of cleanliness and hygiene.

The RIDGID 18-Volt 9 Gal. cordless wet/dry vac takes cordless convenience and puts it in a full-sized form. Cordless power is perfect for car cleaning, jobsite debris or anywhere that`s away from an outlet.
Wash the filter with vinegar and water.

Let the filter soak for approximately one hour, then rinse with clean water. If the filter is too large to fit inside a sink or bucket, use a garden hose to wash it off, letting the water run through the filter in the opposite direction of the airflow.

In order to clean your reusable filter, you can simply rinse it with water. You can do this is a kitchen sink or with your garden hose outside. Be sure to remove as much dust and debris as possible.
Edit a filter

Select Open menu. . Select Edit filter. Edit the filter by using And or Or options to add more filter conditions.

The most common approach for cartridge cleaning is to use water—a hard spray from a garden hose. In a few minutes, the water will rinse away debris from between the folded cartridge pleats.
The cartridge filter can be washed to prolong its life span. Clean with a soft brush before running under cold water. Replace at regular intervals to maintain optimum cleaning performance.

.Hello,
I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. Typically the top filter of which is the sponge is washable but the HEPA filter is not, it can be brushed off and vacuum off with another vacuum, but the best filtration is to replace the HEPA filter and to wash the sponge filter, if the sponge filter get to bad then replace the sponge filter as well. Or, you can check with your local vacuum cleaner dealer in your area or to contact the manufacturer’s website and or phone #. ANSWER : This isn’t really a problem that can be fixed here on Fixya rather than advise you as a buyer. You’d have to contact the people/company you have purchased the filters from and take it up with them regarding the postage. Hope you get a decent reply.

Filters have been clogged with wet cat litter and now the vac will turn on but shuts off and wont cont to vaccume. can we clean/rinse the filter out. filter light has come on and then turns off once the vac shuts down.. thanks
ANSWER : Using a vacuum cleaner for wet cat litter??? Not a good idea at the best of times! The machine’s cutting out because it’s overheating. You don’t tell us the make or model of your machine – some filters are washable, many are not. Your user manual should tell you. As a general rule, cloth- or sponge-type filters are probably washable, paper ones are not. If you do wash the filter, give it at least 24 hours in a warm place to dry thoroughly before re-using.

I have a 10 gallon Shop.Vac 3.0 but I don’t have the instruction booklet. Do I take off the pleated “paper” filter to vacuum up water? Do I use the vac with no filter for liquid?
ANSWER : Yes you should remove the filter for liquids. If the filter is not removed the internal float stop will not operate correctly. This will lead to the liquid being drawn up into the impeller and around the motor.
However I still like to have something in place because in most instances the liquid you vacuum up will not be without some solids. So I like to use a foam insert. Places like Home Depot carries a universal insert that works great.
Hope that helps.
