How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

If the top thread is not reaching the bobbin, the threads will not lock properly, resulting in a skipped stitch. Re-thread your machine, both top and bobbin threads, and test. If your machine is still skipping stitches, there may be an issue with the timing, which will require expert repairs.
Machine not sewing

Check the machine is threaded correctly ensuring the threading line on the hand wheel is at the top position (this puts the needle into the correct position for threading). Make sure the presser foot is lifted before threading the machine. Set your bobbin correctly into the machine.

Threading a sewing machine needle can be hard, often because the needle`s eye is small or sometimes it can be because the cotton thread is just too thick that you can`t get it into the eye. Maybe you just need a brighter light in the room or even a needle threader to guide you.
You could be holding the needle thread too tight. Hold the thread lightly to keep the end from going down into the shuttle. The needle could be thread incorrectly. Thread the needle eye from the front to the back.
First, your needle may be dull or damaged and needs to be replaced. You should also check that you are using the correct needle for the type of fabric you are sewing. For example, knit and synthetic fabric requires a ballpoint SINGER needle (style 2045). Next, check the needle is inserted correctly.
Unless you have a chain stitch machine, then you will certainly need your bobbin, even for specialty stitches like embroidery settings or securing a zipper into place. Always consult your manual for the right type, materials, and sometimes brand of the bobbin.
Do you need special thread for your sewing machine? Yes, you need to use thread that is made for sewing machines, not hand stitching thread, or embroidery thread. And there are so many choices. The thread I use the most is an all-purpose thread.
A blunt or damaged needle is the number one culprit for poor stitch quality and can lead to any number of stitch problems, including skipped and uneven stitches and thread shredding.
While stitching thick fabric, such as denim or leather, a tension of 3.5 to 4.5 is recommended. This is to sew through the fabric and maintain neatness throughout easily.
Sewing Parts Online. eBay – There are many old manuals sold on eBay. Alternatively, you may find someone has a machine the same as yours for sale, and the seller may be willing to make a copy of the manual for you. It never hurts to ask!
Making A Practical and Green Choice. It is a well-known fact that vintage sewing machines are mechanically less complex than the new models; as such, they don`t break down as easily and are easier to repair, making them perfect for beginner sewists.
The first thing to look for if you`re after a collector`s Singer machine is the age of the item. Over 100 years old is considered an antique, and younger than that is `vintage`. By matching the serial number to the corresponding date, you can determine the exact age of the machine.
Moreover, serious collectors are willing to pay thousands of dollars to get the one they want. Luckily, most antique and vintage sewing machines have a typical price range of $500 up to $1500.
Find Your Model #

For sewing machines manufactured since about 1990, look for the model number on the handwheel side of the machine near the on/off switch or the electric cord receptacle.

One of the hardest skills in sewing is fitting garments. Whether you are making a shirt, dress, or pants, getting a good fit can be a challenge. There are many factors that can affect the fit of a garment, including body shape, fabric choice, and pattern size.
If Upper Thread Is Breaking

Be sure that the machine is correctly threaded and there are not obstructions (for example, thread getting caught behind the spool cap or a “rough spot” on the spool itself). Check also that the upper thread tension control is set correctly (consult your machine manual).

Just like using the correct needle, using the right type of thread will make a huge difference in your sewing. Not only are there countless brands of thread, but also different fiber content and spool types.
If you do not have a sewing machine available, the hand backstitch works just as well for sewing permanent seams. A slip stitch is great hand stitch to master whether you own a sewing machine or not.
Many sewing machines sold today come with an automatic threader function. This is essentially a lever that will guide the thread through the eye of your sewing needle for you so that you don`t have to do it yourself.
Material: For most bag sewing applications, thread is offered in four materials listed here in decreasing strength: Nylon (strongest), polyester, polyester/cotton blend, and cotton (weakest).
The running stitch is one of the easiest types of stitches to hand sew. Stitches are intended to hold pieces of fabric together, but not all fabrics are the same.
Threads that are used in sewing machines are twisted to the left. These are known as Z-twist threads. Many of the fibers used for exclusive for hand sewing, however, are S-twist threads, which twist to the right. These include threads like embroidery floss and perle (or pearl) cotton.
The best thread to use for hand embroidery is a heavy weight cotton, such as embroidery floss. Embroidery floss is also best for cross stitching too.
Stitches are supposedly the result of too much exertion on your torso and spinal muscles. Slowing down or taking a short breather from exercise can allow these muscles to relax and reduce any pain from overexertion.

I have a Husqvarna Viking Designer sewing machine. The fuse blew in the machine and I am having trouble finding a replacement fuse. It is a T3.5/250v glass fuse. Please let me know where to find one. I have searched the internet high and low and can’t find one. Radio Shack has a 3.0amp 250v slow blow fuse whick seems to be the right dimensions. Willl that work. Otherwise, I am not sure what to do and can’t afford to take the machine to a repair show. Thank you.
ANSWER : That fuse will work no problem. There is no harm in trying it.
The machine probably requires about 2 amps or less under normal operation.
Being a 3.0 amp slow blow fuse, it will withstand short bursts of extra current when your machine gets temporarily overloaded.

Just make sure the machine is properly lubricated and runs freely. The fuse will definitely blow if your machine should get jammed or something like that.

I think I know where I can score some. Cost of postage only. 🙂

Email me if you like.

With my K6 Industrial Singer sewing machine the top thread seems to be too tight. The bottom thread is looping too much on the top of the fabric. The timming is ok. I have checked and rechecked that I have threaded it correctly. It was working great the other day. Please help as we are live out on a property and too far out to get someone out to look at it. Thanks Tania Sorry no category for sewing machines on your list
ANSWER : Hello there, loosen your top thread tension,if it looping on top of the material the tension is way too tight, you will also find changing the thread size to smaller thread, the top tension will also reduce, depending on application a good size thread to use is 25 grade, bobbin tension should have just a slight amount of drag as the top thread and bottom work against each other when sewing.

Tony

We have the water hooked up at the back of machine. there is a spout for the water to come in and fill the ice tray.but is does not. If we turn the water on it fills up the space under the ice basket. I keep getting red light and then the two smal llight one ice and one water come on. We can hear the motor trying to fill the ice try and then lights come on. Please help me this so I can use this product. It did not come with a manual.
ANSWER : The water inlet valve on the back of unit opens when the ice maker needs water. If the valve doesn’t seal good because of sediment or wear it will continue to drip and when the water reaches the ice maker supply tube it will freeze blocking the fill tube.. You can take the water line off the valve and watch to see if it drips.
With the fill tube blocked with ice the water can drip down the back wall or drip into the ice bin or just stop up. You can use a hairdryer to thaw the tube out.

I can’t open it to clean it, please help! I know I have to pull the grey cover, and I have tried hard but no luck. Seems attached from the bottom, so I am not sure how it will come out. Thank you for your help.
ANSWER : I had the same problem. It normally opens with a little tug on the door but if you are like me and you let it fill up with a year’s worth of pet hair etc., the door will jam. The only option is to give it a firm tug. I would suggest that you make sure that you apply even strength to both sides to prevent breaking your unit.
