How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

This happens when the filter gets broken, worn out which makes them leak and make way to pool water. Other factors that can lead to this problem are – worn out filter grids, damaged o-rings, broken valves inside filter tank. In some cases, it may be due to excessive sand or diatomaceous earth present in the filter.
A bit of water dripping out of your sand filter`s waste line after backwashing the filter is a normal occurrence. However, if this drip continues for a long time and/or the drip becomes more intense, you could have a problem on your hands. Typically, an old or damaged spider gasket is to blame for a leaking waste line.
Usually the cause for this is the small O-rings on your multiport valve rotor getting unseated or having debris get stuck there. In that case then the fix is quite simple, simply clean and reseat the O-rings (don`t forget to apply the silicone lubricant) and your leaking problems should be gone.
Leakage From the Filter

You might want to check your spider gasket seals, o-rings, and valves for issues. Recalibrating these parts can help you remedy the problem. But if not, you will need to replace them with new ones.

Water flow problems can result from something simple, like a dirty pool filter. If this is the cause, all you need to do is clean the filter. A slightly dirty filter shouldn`t cause problems, but a filter that is full of leaves and other debris can put too much stress on the pool`s filter system.
Most leaks in an under-sink water filter are related to a clogged filter cartridge, a faulty O-ring or a damaged filter housing. Here`s how to fix these common issues. Begin by gathering what you may need to make impromptu repairs without making a mess, including: A filter wrench.
Petroleum-Based Products. Some pool advice that has circulated over the years is that certain types of petroleum – like vaseline – can be used to oil the o-rings in a pool`s filter. However, any petroleum-based product will eventually destroy both your o-rings and filter and should never be used.
Check to see if there is dirt or debris returning to your pool or during a pool vacuum. If there is, this can be a sign you have a broken lateral. Laterals are plastic parts at the bottom of the sand filter, with slits so small that it keeps out sand grains, until it cracks that is.
A leaky valve doesn`t close the way it should, allowing some blood to flow backward into the left atrium. If left untreated, a leaky valve could lead to heart failure.
Backwashing a sand filter too often could lead to cloudy water. Assuming that your pressure gauge is functioning properly, resist the urge to backwash a sand filter until it`s climbed at least 5 psi higher than the clean pressure.
Store your D.E. or Cartridge Filter in the basement, if possible. If you store your filter in a shed or a detached Garage make sure you cover your filter and keep it away from chlorine or any corrosive chemicals that off gas. Sand filters should be left outside.
Most pools benefit from a sand filter change every two-three years, but it depends on how often you use your pool and the quality of the sand. Sometimes cleaning the filter is not enough, and the sand needs to be completely replaced. Over time, sand particles wear down and no longer catch the debris as effectively.
Standing water or corrosion at the pump or around pipes is a sure sign of a leak. Equipment leaks can often be found with just visual inspection. If air or dirt is being pulled into the plumbing system through a leak, you may see that air or dirt being blown into the pool from the returns.
A clogged filter can`t directly cause water leaks in a furnace, but it can contribute to leaking air conditioner problems if they share the same ductwork. Many central air conditioning systems are installed with the evaporator coil sitting on top of the furnace inside the main supply duct.
A dirty air filter is a source of several issues in your air conditioning unit, including water leakage. When the filters are clogged, airflow is obstructed which leads to frozen coils.
Deep Chemical Cleaning

Turn the valve to β€œfilter” and remove the pump`s strainer lid. Pour sand filter cleaner into the strainer basket and replace the lid. Turn the pump off and leave it off for at least 8 hours. Backwash the filter for 3-5 minutes again to remove dirt, debris, and the cleaner.

You don`t need to run your filter all the time, but running it for at least a few hours a day will keep it clean and ensure your pool lasts a long time.
Most filter systems are designed to operate in the 5-15 psi or 10-20 psi range. The way to find out your particular correct pool filter pressure is to clean or backwash the filter thoroughly and empty the pump and skimmer baskets.
Too little sand and you will have cloudy water no matter how much your filter runs. For this reason check your filter manufacturer`s specs. Typically filters hold sand in 50 lb. increments, so you can safely expect filters to range from 100, 150, 200, 250 lbs., etc.
We recommend that our customers run their pumps rain or shine UNLESS you have an electrical storm. In that case, lightning could strike an outside circuit, which could damage your pump and other equipment. If you`re worried about lightning, turn the pump off or shut off the breaker.
A filter is always filtering out fine debris, minerals and other particulate matter. Helps to remove lotions and oils from swimmers. There are several types of filter systems for keeping your system clean. Clean and care for your system per the manufacturers recommended guidelines.
Vinegar can also be used to remove mineral deposits from a pool, shine up metal surfaces, clean your pool filter, and get rid of algae and other things growing in your pool. You can use a vinegar solution and scrub brush to accomplish most of this and use undiluted vinegar for stubborn stains.
While you can also use chlorine and other useful chemicals to destroy the impurities in your swimming pool, the filter removes them from water efficiently and appropriately.
The most effective way to determine if your water filter is working properly is to test your water before and after it passes through your filter. Such analysis is called performance testing because it tests the effectiveness of your filter in reducing or removing potentially harmful contaminants that pass through.

.Hello,
I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. Typically the top filter of which is the sponge is washable but the HEPA filter is not, it can be brushed off and vacuum off with another vacuum, but the best filtration is to replace the HEPA filter and to wash the sponge filter, if the sponge filter get to bad then replace the sponge filter as well. Or, you can check with your local vacuum cleaner dealer in your area or to contact the manufacturer’s website and or phone #. My 4 yr old Nilfisk vacuum cleaner has been working fine up until now. But suddenly, it has hardly any suction power and also, hot air seems to be coming out thru the vents on top and also thru the space that’s normally used for blowing air OUT….the outlet with the retractable cover located close to the part where the power cable comes out of and retracts into. I’ve checked the filter and the hose and they are not clogged…I have also put in a new bag. Not keen to buy another vacuum cleaner u
ANSWER : Hi there SmartAlec from Nelsonvacuums.com.au here.It sounds like a blockage of some kind. The best way to find it is to set the machine up for normal vacuuming and remove one component at a time until the suction returns. eg turn on and feel suction under floor head – not good? then remove the rod, then the hose.
Once at the machine on its own it gets a little triky as i don’t know which model you have. However if you have a bagged model remove all the filters and the bag and retest. There will be at least 2 filters, one before the motor and one after (maybe under the vacuum or right at the back). If it is a bagless model even though the filter may look clean it is probably blocked with very fine dust. If suction returns when the filter is removed then you need to buy a new filter. I am a nilfisk vacuum cleaner agent so i can supply a filter for you.
If this still doesnt help you are welcome to call me if you live in australia my contact details are on my website www.nelsonvacuums.com.au.
Hope this helps !.

I purchased a Eureka C4910 last year and have a question that I am hoping you can answer.

There are two motor actions with this vacuum, 1) the vacuum suction, and 2) the beater bar. The action of the beater bar is that motor is supposed to automatically shut off when the handle is in the complete vertical position assuming the vacuum is stationary, but then turn on when the handle is tilted toward the floor, assuming the vacuum is moving back and forth.

The beater bar motor turn-on mechan

ANSWER : Good day!

Normally when the motor is easily moved back and forth means that it have a proper lubrication, proper alignment and no clogs.

When the motor and the belt is OK the problem could be on electrical wiring and switch.

If found electrical switch burned out you need to replaced it because when the switch is burn the contact of that switch is open even you turn it ON.that’s why the motor is not function because the voltage is not pass through the circuit because of open switch. You need to replaced it.
And check some fuses if any and other burned electrical wire.Replaced it also.

Thank you and don’t forget to rate my answer.

I took the cover off the brush so I could cut off all the hair that was wrapped around it (vacuum was working fine, I just noticed the hair). I pulled the brush/spinner thing off one side, cleaned everything, popped it back in where it belonged, and tried to make sure the belt was in the proper alignment.
