How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

Another reason the vacuum is not turning on may be that the circuit breaker may have tripped. Check the breaker on the unit and if it continues to fail it usually means the motor is going bad. Another reason can be the bad signal from the unit to the wall inlet.
If the motor still has some life in it, it will start, but if it is going bad, it will only work for 10-15 minutes or less. If it doesn`t start at all, it is obviously bad. Sometimes slapping the motor or vacuum unit will jar the motor and get it to work again for a few minutes. Intermittent motors should be replaced.
In that case, this could indicate several issues, including a bad motor, a lack of electricity to the unit, or a tripped breaker. The vacuum may simply need resetting. If a unit won`t turn off, this is usually to do with a circuit board or relay problem.
Putting in the incorrect amount of oil, putting in the wrong type of oil, and oil contamination can all cause the pump to not reach full vacuum. For this reason, you must check the oil regularly to ensure that it is not only clean, but also properly filled.
Vacuum Cleaner: Why doesn`t my vacuum cleaner`s brush roll spin? A broken drive belt, damaged brush roll, jammed brush roll bearings, tripped brush roll motor overload, failed brush roll motor or a wiring failure in the wand or nozzle can prevent the brush roll from spinning.
It might sound simple, but lack of power is often the cause of a vacuum cleaner that won`t work. Check that the vacuum cleaner is plugged into a working power outlet and that fuses and breakers don`t need resetting. An activated thermal cut-out due to a blockage is the next most likely cause of the problem.
The most common problems found in vacuum cleaners are low suction force, excessive noise, burning smell, vacuum not turn on, and overheating. These issues can be fixed by either cleaning the device or replacing some parts of the device. At times, it is best to seek a professional to fix the cleaner effectively.
While different factors affect how long a system lasts, many central vacuums can last 20-30 years, or even longer, depending on how often they are used.
The most common problem with a vacuum cleaner is also the easiest to remedy: clogs in the hose or attachments. Also the electrical cord, motor, switch, fan, brushes, and motor bearings can all need repair or replacement.
We have two possible ways of adjusting the pressure in a vacuum system: first, by changing the pumping speed (altering the speed of the pump or throttling by closing a valve); second, through admission of gas (opening a valve).
Clog located in the vacuum hose

Turn the unit on and feel the suction at the end of the hose handle. If there is no or low suction, then the clog is in the hose. You can remove the clog by running a long, stiff object through the hose, such as a butter knife, starting at the wall end.

Solenoid valves are electromechanical valves that can control airflow in a vacuum system to help create or dissipate the vacuum.
Vacuum Pump Basics

The pressure ranges are placed into several groups: Rough/Low Vacuum: 1000 to 1 mbar / 760 to 0.75 Torr. Fine/ Medium Vacuum: 1 to 103 mbar / 0.75 to 7.53 Torr. High Vacuum: 103 to 107 mbar / 7.53 to 7.57 Torr.

Without a reliable vacuum regulator in place, a variation of pressures can adversely affect your experiments. The more you can stabilize the system through the use of an automatic regulator, the more accurate your results will be.
Factors like the amount of suction developed by the suction motor, the amount of resistance in the filtration system as it traps the dirt, the total amount of resistance in all air passages as well as the design of the cleaning nozzle will significantly affect the vacuum cleaner`s ability to pick up the dirt.
The average life expectancy of a mid-range vacuum cleaner is about six years. You can fix or replace things like blocked filters, jammed brush rolls, frayed hoses, worn-out stick vac batteries and broken accessories yourself.
If you don`t vacuum your carpet, the dirt will break down carpet fibers and create a breeding ground for dust mites and bacteria. In addition, your home will begin to smell musty from the dirt, mites, and other organisms settling into the fibers.
Connect a tachometer and vacuum gauge to a none regulated vacuum source on the engine. Disconnect and plug fuel vapor canister vacuum lines. Start engine and run the engine until it reaches normal operating temperature. Note the vacuum gauge reading and any variations in the pointer movement at idle and 2000 RPM.
Vacuum System Failures:

Occurs when the vacuum pump fails or when both intakes are blocked.

NOTE: The reset button is located on the upper left-hand side of the unit where the low voltage wires connect to the unit. It is most noticeable when popped out after the breaker has been tripped. 3.
– Some vacuums have an in-line thermal fuse (often located between the switch lead and the motor coil). If the fuse is blown it will need to be replaced. – Check your home circuit breaker – it may have tripped. – Some vacuums have a brushroll on/off control.
WD40 is fine with plastic, I`ve used it for years including on Dyson`s flimsy plastic with no issues. I use it on everything to clean as well as oil and prevent corrosion. If You Like Machines, Radios and Cars As Well As Vacuum Cleaners Then Check Out The Official RustySkull Productions YouTube!
A universal motor is typically used as suction motor across vacuum cleaners. The universal motor is a series DC-motor that is specially designed to operate on alternating current (AC) as well as on direct current (DC).

I have any easy-flo built-in vacuum. I recently had the bearings on the motor, top and bottom replaced. I put the vacuum back together and it mow has low suction power. There is plenty of suction on the side of the canister where the rigid tubing meets the canister body but little suction at the wall plates. Any ideas? Roger
ANSWER : There is either a blockage or a pipe is open somewhere. You should check the system at the wall valve without the hose to determine if the pipes are blocked or if perhaps the hose is plugged. If one of the wall valves is damaged or open, this will affect the whole system. Some times, there is painting or renovations taking place in the home and a valve has been removed during the work. I have seen this many times. All valves must be in place and closed for the system to function properly. I have also seen garage valves held open by storage boxes, etc. and they are overlooked because they don’t get used often and in some cases, the home owner doesn’t even know they are there.
.If you turn the machine on with the switch on the side of the unit, observe the sound of the machine. If the motor races, then the pipes are closed (no breaks). If the motor runs normally, you have an opening somewhere. The same thing applies to the valves. If you turn the machine on and the motor races even when a valve is opened, then you have a blockage, but if the motor doesn’t change when a valve is opened, then the pipes are compromised.
.I hope this helps. Let me know.

I had the vacuum cleaner question about the canister and the wand/powerhead… the Kenmore Progressive Vacuum canister model 116.25812 and the canister not powering off without unplugging the vacuum. The solution I received that they both run on their own switch so it is normal makes sense. However, is there a power switch on the canister anywhere? The only way for the canister to be turned off is by unplugging it. Any ideas? One would think there would be a switch. I am new to fixya and hope
ANSWER : Hi. On some models, one switch controls all of the power. Your issue, which is no working switch is almost certainly a blown triac on the circuit board in the canister – kenmore part number KC86WBZRZ000

Looks like a common fault with this particular model judging by the number of complaints on the web.

Dirt devil vacuum cleaner–trouble vacuuming dirt and pet hair on carpeting –is the problem with the spinning brush which contacts the floor,  not contacting the carpeting??  I thought (when I bought this vacuum) that the aforementioned brush was adjustable to various heights of carpeting.  Sometimes, it seems like nothing is being vacuumed up –unless I have just put a new bag on the vacuum… Do I need or can I replace the spinning brush on the bottom of the vacuum so it kicks up and vacuums
ANSWER : Try replacing the belt. Rubber belts stretch out after about a year.

I cleaned out my brush in the bottom front, cleaned out the small tubing going into the canister, and the canister itself. I also changed the filter.I snapped everything back into place, but Since then, it doesn’t seem to have any suction and there seems to be a space between the canister and the bottom of the vacumm where the canister sits. At that area, you can feel air coming out when trying to vacumm and it just doesn’t pick up, it seems to be just blowing stuff around.

No suction I have the central vac type. It has no suction at the can. I pulled the hose going to the walls and tested there…and nothing. I removed the dirt can and checked the motor …it is spinning but does not feel like any suction. I checked the exhaust and it is pushing strong air out. I also cleaned the filter and still nothing. Is there a relay or something that would cause only exhaust air. I emptied the can of dirt and put it back together and have absolutely no air…..hear the motor
ANSWER : On some units there is a screen that protects the impeller of the motor. If this gets sealed off with debris then it is like putting a potato in the tail pipe of a car. Taking the top off the unit reveals the motor. DO UN-PLUG the unit first from the electrical outlet. Take off the exhaust piping if any to allow the motor to be lifted out of the canister. There is typically enough wire to allow this without taking any wires off. Look at the bottom of the motor to make sure the nut has not spun off the impeller and it is still attached to make suction. The look at the hole (aprox. 2″ round) to make sure it is clear of any debris. If it is not clean it and re-install everything. If the impeller is off the motor it is new motor time.

I purchased a Eureka C4910 last year and have a question that I am hoping you can answer.

There are two motor actions with this vacuum, 1) the vacuum suction, and 2) the beater bar. The action of the beater bar is that motor is supposed to automatically shut off when the handle is in the complete vertical position assuming the vacuum is stationary, but then turn on when the handle is tilted toward the floor, assuming the vacuum is moving back and forth.

The beater bar motor turn-on mechan

ANSWER : Good day!

Normally when the motor is easily moved back and forth means that it have a proper lubrication, proper alignment and no clogs.

When the motor and the belt is OK the problem could be on electrical wiring and switch.

If found electrical switch burned out you need to replaced it because when the switch is burn the contact of that switch is open even you turn it ON.that’s why the motor is not function because the voltage is not pass through the circuit because of open switch. You need to replaced it.
And check some fuses if any and other burned electrical wire.Replaced it also.

Thank you and don’t forget to rate my answer.
