How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?
Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :
Use the dust brush attachment – close the blind slats so they lie flat and vacuum. Reverse the blinds so that the slats are lying the other way and repeat. Repeat monthly or as needed. Use the upholstery attachment on mattresses and fabric surfaces.
Should the brush not rotate freely there may be debris tangled around the ends of the brush, carefully remove any obstructions or replace the brush with a new one. We recommend that you fit a new belt and brush once per year to keep your Reactive vacuum working efficiently.
Check for a plugged hose
Plugged vacuum hoses are sometimes the reason for a loss in suction. Hoses can get clogged with hair, dust bunnies, string, or anything else that can`t pass through the other end of the hose. Airways inside the machine should be looked at as well. Wherever there is an air passage, check it.
Start the engine and spray
Scope out all the vacuum lines under the hood. Then start the engine and spray each connection with a light stream of water. If a connection sucks in the water, you`ve found your leak. A vacuum leak can cause a rough idle, high rpm, poor gas mileage and even trigger a check-engine light.
First is to simply squirt some dish soap on the brush and run it under warm water. Use your fingers to massage the soap through all the bristles, getting the brush nice and sudsy. Then, rinse it off in a sink or tub, still using your fingers to work the water through every cluster of bristles. Scrubbin` the scrubber!
The Suction Motor
The first component is one of the most important parts. The suction motor creates vacuum pressure and suction by rotating a motor fan.
Identify a dust brush attachment by its circular or rectangular shape and long bristles. As the name suggests, this attachment is designed for dusting. Its long, soft hairs are gentle and won`t scratch surfaces. Use it on furniture, blinds, lampshades, workbenches, window screens or the dashboard of the car.
Dust the targeted (area of the) carpet with washing powder, salt or baking soda. Then, mix water and dishwashing liquid and splash it on top. Gently scrub the carpet with a clean brush, working in one direction. Repeat for stubborn stains.
Avoid using beater heads and brushes – they will catch and lift the fibres, and eventually this will give your carpet a bobbled or felted appearance. Cut pile carpets should ideally be vacuumed with an upright vacuum cleaner with a beater bar and brush.
If you`re vacuuming hardwood or other uncarpeted floors, put your vacuum on the bare floors setting. This setting uses suction only so your floors don`t get scratched by the powered brush. If your vacuum doesn`t have this setting, use it only on carpet and not on bare floors.

I HAVE LOST MY INSTRUCTION BOOK FOR THE STEAM VAC SPIN AND SCRUB. I WANT TO USE THE STAIR ATTACHMENT, BUT I CAN’T FIGURE OUT HOW TO HOOK IT UP, OR OPERATE IT. You can download a PDF version of the manual at the link below. I believe you can contact Hoover as well and they might mail you one.
Need instructions how to use Hoover Steam Vac Spin Scrub. I borrowed it from my Sister and she left it with no instruction book or letting me know how to operate it. I put water & cleaner in top tank. That’s all I know to do. Do I put any water in bottom tank? I figured not, since that is probably where the water goes when sucked up by vac. Do I leave lid on bottom tank? I usually use a commercial cleaner, and this is very different. I need to know NOW, as I must return it to her today, and I’m
I did have a solution in just a few minutes. Someone responded with a solution that gave me the website where I could go and print the manual in pdf, so did that, and checking instructions I was able to clean my carpets and get the shampooer back to my sister later the same day. I really appreciated your site and help I got for my problem. I found it on google. Thanks again!
Parts replacement We have a Hoover Steam Vac that has a broken part #10 in your picture or Part # 37271035. Does this part cover the whole top section of the Vac? Is it hard to replace? Where can you get the best prices on Hoover parts? I have been on Hoovers website and they don’t even recognize this Steam Vac. which is hard to believe they don’t even recognize their own unit? Thanks Ray
This the hood or top cover. There some screws on the bottom as well as on the top, then it comes off.
Lost Part I have a 6.5 hp 18 gallon shop vac ultra pro. There is a part that goes into the inside of the tank and screws into the collection hose that attaches it to the tank. This part accidentally got thrown away when someone dumped it and now I cannot attach the hose to use the vacuum. Can this part be purchased separately?
I found a manual online for the shop vac and found the part number. Did locate part online.
Getting part My repair shop cannot get the part for my filter queen. It’s the plug in the body of the machine that the short plug goes in from the hose. It’s been bent. Can I get a replacement part?
Have you called your filter queen dealer? i used to be a rep. and we would fix problems at the office that i worked out of. hope this helps.
I have an old Shop Vac model 3331.5. This is a 12 gallon 1.5 hight peak shop vac with a detachable blower. After many years I decided to use the blower feature, but have lost the lost the manual. Question; how do I attach the hoses to the blower? The motor has that cap on it the direct the flow of air in one direction and the wide hoses do not fit over it. I may be missing a part, but I would think the directional cap would have to come off anyway.
Remove the cap that directs the air and insert the hose in there.
I have a hoover 3000 i have not used in awhile, and since I removed a large rug, I would like to use it again on my slate floor. HOWEVER, I cannot get it to pick up ANY water in the water recovery unit……it is dry, dry, dry. I have put in a new filter, cleaned the nozzle unit, the scrubber , and reconnected both the recovery unit and the water unit several times, but to no avail. I would like to get a graut attachment a well as replacement part, but since I can’t get the basic unit to work, I
Have you made sure the plastic filter cover with the round hole in it that covers the filter is in place ( part # 59177096 ). This piece seems to get lost, and without it there is no pick-up. The other common problem is that the wheel assembly has been damaged. Look at the bottom of the Floormate. You will see a black plastic wheel assembly. There are two pegs at the rear attaching it to the base. If this piece has a crack in it where it attaches to the base, there will be no pick-up.
The removable filter at the front is cleaned regularly, and is not clogged. However, the machine appears to be suffering from being clogged by dust, as it has started to make a high pitched noise, and I fear it may burn out. I can see some dust inside the front panel but cannot see how to remove the front to clean it out. (NB. I have located two screws – one on either side – but cannot see how to proceed further.) Please help! Thank you.
Here.is a tip that I wrote about my Bissel but I bet you have the same.problem and the hose is clogged…
