How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

The air filter traps particles as the air travels through the vacuum cleaner. If the filter is clogged, the vacuum cleaner will not have proper suction. If your vacuum filter is clogged, refer to your owner`s manual for cleaning instructions.
Push a broomstick through the hose to force any large clogs out. Take the end of the broomstick and feed it through the hose. Push the stick in slowly so you don`t accidentally break or puncture the hose. If there is a large clog in your hose, the broomstick will force it out from the other end.
If both your foam filter and felt filter have not been cleaned in the past month, this may be why your vacuum has lost suction. To clean the foam and felt filters, remove the dust cup and pull out the two filters that are on the top of the motor base. Rinse the filters with lukewarm water until the water runs clear.
One of the easiest ways to increase vacuum cleaner suction is to empty the dust bag or container. Dust containers need to have enough space for airflow, otherwise, they could get clogged and have less suction power. Regularly check your dust compartment and empty or change it when it`s already 70-80% full.
The suction motor creates vacuum pressure and suction by rotating a motor fan. The impeller rotates at an incredibly high speed of about 30,000 to 35,000 RPM. A suction motor`s power is measured by multiplying the rate of air flow and the vacuum pressure, which induces air flow from the brush through the hose.
Vacuum means the absence of all matter including air. As there is no air in the vacuum, air pressure will be zero.
To reset the thermostat, press the vacuum`s power button into off position and unplug the vacuum. Check the vacuum for potential causes of overheating, such as clogs or a full dust cup, and allow the vacuum to set and cool off for 30 minutes before turning it back on.
Check the hose for any clogs

If your Shark vac has a hose, feel along the length for any lumps. That indicates a clog that`s causing your suction issues. See if you can break the clog by applying gentle pressure with your hands, or gently move it to the end of the hose to remove it.

A little bit of water can do wonders for boosting a suction cup`s grip. Using warm water, rinse the whole cup so it softens it up. Shake the drops of water off the cup quickly and then put it up on the wall. That can often do the trick.
Suction is the air pressure differential between areas. Removing air from a space results in a pressure differential. Suction pressure is therefore limited by external air pressure. Even a perfect vacuum cannot suck with more pressure than is available in the surrounding environment.
The two main indicators to determine vacuum power performance are water lift and airflow. The water lift is measured in mmH2O, mbar or kPa. It represents the suction force and is the reference parameter for vacuuming liquids and heavy materials. The airflow is measured in m3/h or in l/s.
Suction is a force created when there`s a difference in air pressure. When you use a straw to drink a milkshake, suction forces the delicious ice cream to move up into your mouth. Suction comes from the same Latin root as suck. Suction happens when a vacuum cleaner sucks up dirt or when someone sucks on a straw.
If there is a clog in the vacuum, you won`t have good suction and the vacuum won`t work. The clog can be in the vacuum head, the hose or where the hose meets the actual vacuum.
Connect a tachometer and vacuum gauge to a none regulated vacuum source on the engine. Disconnect and plug fuel vapor canister vacuum lines. Start engine and run the engine until it reaches normal operating temperature. Note the vacuum gauge reading and any variations in the pointer movement at idle and 2000 RPM.
Eureka vacuum cleaners have been known for their excellent service and reliability in cleaning floors, carpets, rugs, upholstery and drapery for more than 100 years.
Start the engine and spray

Scope out all the vacuum lines under the hood. Then start the engine and spray each connection with a light stream of water. If a connection sucks in the water, you`ve found your leak. A vacuum leak can cause a rough idle, high rpm, poor gas mileage and even trigger a check-engine light.

Suction hoses, sometimes called `hard suction hoses`, are a semi-rigid hose, often made from a flexible PVC that encases a rigid PVC helix. They operate under negative pressures, which means that a suction hose draws water from an unpressurised (or static) water source. This is known as a drafting operation.
What`s happening with your vacuum cleaner is that a clog has built up and debris being agitated by the roller is spitting out or stirring up dust without sucking it in.
If the roller brush is not spinning, the vacuum becomes hard to push. One reason could be that the power button is not set to position II, which runs the roller brush. If the button does not work, here is the link to the power button replacement guide. Another reason is that the roller brush could be broken.
Replace the Brush Belt

If the vacuum is still hard to push, tilt it back far enough that you can inspect the moving brush while the vacuum is running. Be careful to avoid getting too close to the moving parts. If you see that the brush is not turning, that means you will need to replace the brush belt.

Overcharging leads to overfeeding the evaporator with refrigerant, which leads to higher suction pressure. Another possibility is having oversized EXV causes an overfeed to the evaporate, which increases your suction pressure.
The Suction Control Valve or SCV is responsible for the control of fuel pressure inside common rail engines. It allows only the required amount of fuel to be pumped through the system.

No suction Hello – any help with this would be much appreciated!

I just changed the bag and filters. The machine runs, seems normal, but there is no suction. There is no blockage of the hose, as indicated by the fact that that little viewer window above where the hose connects to the unit is not showing the red portion that it shows when there is something blocking the hose (god, this is hard to describe!).

If I disconnect the hose and put my hand over the hole, I feel some suction. But

ANSWER : Well, it actually sounds like there is a blockage. Try removing your hose and dropping something through it, like a quqrter. If it comes through, no clog. If it is clogged, I believe that machine has a blower on the upper part of the cleaner (maybe in the bag compartment towards the top. You can take out the filter holder and plug the hose in there and run the unit . Does the blockage come out? If not, Try shaking the hose, or you can put a stiff wire in it to try to free it. Do not run water through it. If there is no blockage at all, then you will probably need to take it to a service center. But I am pretty confident that we are looking at a clog situation. Let me know if this fixesya! Thanks, Rene (vacuum Doctor)

No Suction I get great suction in the hose, but when I plug the hose back into the unit, there is no suction and the air flow indicator line goes completely red. I've changed the bag and filters. I took the small panel off the back and made sure there is no clog, and took the hose off to make sure there was no clog there. Still no suction. Please help.
ANSWER : I about to say that’s always a clog of some sort that causes that

I have a DC07 and the brush wasn’t rotating and I had no suction at the brush but perfect suction through the hose. I noticed a large build up of dog hair around the brush so I took off the cover plate and removed all the hair, cleaned inside the floor/brush housing and cleaned out the hose. I also cleaned the filter and removed the other air access cover and made sure that they were clear. I put everything back and the brush still doesn’t turn and there is still no suction through the bottom

My Eureka/The Boss doesn’t seem to have the suction power it had. However, when I place my hand under the hose, it has good suction, then when I try to pull in a small particle, it doesn’t, unless I have the hose nozzle completely over the particle. The vac is 10 yrs. old. I cleaned everything. Someone said the belt. Would the belt matter if the hose doesn’t **** well? It is just old and worn out? It did shut off recently do to overheating. Help. Thanks. Lorraine
ANSWER : Doesn’t “The Boss” Vacuum have a filter? Perhaps your filter is clogged and not allowing it to work properly.

Help hi there. i have a hoover savvy u8172-900 vaccum. the hose has great suction, but there is limited suction on the main unit and the brush does not spin when i try to use the product. we have cleared the brush of any debris and have also installed a new bag. a few days ago, we disconnected the hose to make sure there was not any foreign bodies stuck in the unit…nothing seems to help. any advise?
ANSWER : As the hose fits into the base (if i am correct) the power at the base should be fine, make sure the base is clean and free from blockage,.you say the brush doesn’t spin, has the belt broken, if so replace it, (very cheap) and only a couple of screws to undo, the roller not rotating will effect the power of suction dramatically,.start from there and see how you go..if i have helped please rate me

My eureka optima upright bagless vaccum has VERY low suction using the floor part. the hose has excellent suction. i removed the little translucent door underneath and there were no blockages, i cleaned the brushroll thoroughly and that hasnt helped either. i know this probably isnt recommended but i turned it on to the floor setting with the brushroll off and stuck my fingers up the intake as far as i could, the suction was good further up but it just seems to stop down at the base. because i s
ANSWER : I will try and help here. Is the sole plate on the bottom of the vacuum complety on and there are no visible cracks along the seam where it meets the body? This is the usual cause for this. Onc you take of the plate to access the roller and brushes, if this is not put on correctl you will lose suction. Look for any other openenings that can cause a air leak.

Lost suction my DCO7 lost suction in the hose I started taking it apart and cleaning it and looking for clogs (probably more than I should have) and when I put it back together it has awesome suction in the hose but no suction in the base. It just pulls the pine needles up (christmas tree) but they never appear in the “bag” compartment and when I look they are just all gathered in a clump in the bottom by the brush.
ANSWER : Hi.
.
.Remove the sole plate turn the 3 plastic screws to unlock & lift off.
.
.Now remove the blockages that have accumilated from the oppening of short clear hose.
.Check you can turn brush roller & check belt.
.
.Now reassemble switch on pull handle back & look under machine is brush spinning ?
.
.If not check the knob on side of machine is in drive (D) position.
