How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

The superficial causes for your VAX vacuum shutting off during use can be from blockages along the hose and body of the model. There can also be a blockage caused by a build-up of dust, dirt, hair and debris across the models` brush bar.
Why is the vacuum is blowing dusty air out of the back? Simple: the bag or canister is full and the vacuum has nowhere to store the dust it is collecting. Empty the canister or bag. If that doesn`t fix it, the vacuum filter needs to be cleaned or changed.
WHY WON`T THE MACHINE PICK UP? The float in the dirty water tank may have been activated. Empty the dirty water tank and wait for the float to settle before re-starting the machine.
Use Some Water

A little bit of water can do wonders for boosting a suction cup`s grip. Using warm water, rinse the whole cup so it softens it up. Shake the drops of water off the cup quickly and then put it up on the wall. That can often do the trick.

The brushbar will stop and the light on the Powered Head will illuminate red. To reset, remove the Powered Head from the reach wand/handheld and clear any obstruction. Wait 1 minute before refitting the Powered Head, switch the slim vac on and press the brushbar on/off button.
Check for a plugged hose:

Plugged vacuum hoses are sometimes the reason for a loss in suction. Hoses can get clogged with hair, dust bunnies, string, or anything else that can`t pass through the other end of the hose. Airways inside the machine should be looked at as well. Wherever there is an air passage, check it.

What`s happening with your vacuum cleaner is that a clog has built up and debris being agitated by the roller is spitting out or stirring up dust without sucking it in.
Factors may include having a bad motor, incompatible pump applications or poor ventilation. Constant overheating may indicate a malfunction.
The most common problem with a vacuum cleaner is also the easiest to remedy: clogs in the hose or attachments. Also the electrical cord, motor, switch, fan, brushes, and motor bearings can all need repair or replacement. The drive belt may need replacing; and the attachments, hoses, and filters may need unclogging.
Why is the steam mop not producing steam/detergent? There may be no water in water tank, check the water tank has water. Check the water tank is securely fitted and the hard water filter is in place. Hard water filter may be blocked and need to be replaced.
This can be caused by low airflow (e.g., dirty filter, slipping belt, undersized or restricted ductwork, dust and dirt buildup on blower wheel) or a dirty or plugged evaporator coil. Checking superheat will indicate if the low suction is caused by insufficient heat getting to the evaporator.
Keep in mind this is an approximate time period. Many factors can affect a suction machine`s life expectancy, including abuse and failure to maintain it. But you can use the 10-year time frame as a tool to budget for future equipment needs.
Gravity and friction are the two main forces that make vacuum suction work. While gravity pulls molecules in the air toward the earth, creating an atmospheric pressure, the suction cup and vacuum pump cause a pressure difference, attaching both surfaces.
One of the easiest ways to increase vacuum cleaner suction is to empty the dust bag or container. Dust containers need to have enough space for airflow, otherwise, they could get clogged and have less suction power. Regularly check your dust compartment and empty or change it when it`s already 70-80% full.
The battery creates the suction power, so some cordless vacuums lose suction as the battery starts to deplete. Cordless vacuums with a lithium battery last longer and provide consistent suction power, but only the best cordless vacuums can perform as well a plug-in vacuum.

I took the small panel off the back and made sure there is no clog, and took the hose off to make sure there was no clog there. Still no suction. Please help.

My Bissell ProHeat 2x is pouring water out of the bottom anytime it’s turned on. I had it in the shop for no water, took it back again for the same problem, took it back again because it had no suction, finally took it apart and found the problem with the suction and fixed it myself. Worked fine for a day and now it is constantly leaking water, if it’s turned on, and is useless for anything except for making a mess.
ANSWER : Took the unit apart and discovered my heater had small pinholes in the metal and they had put in silicone, instead of a gasket, which didn’t seal. So much for the place I took it to “saving” my heater for me. I repaired it myself by getting a few o-rings and a seal from the hardware store. As for the “holes” in the bottom – a little marine fixative.

I have a kirby sentria. vacuumed up my son’s headphones and immediately shut if off. took brush off, unwound headphones, put it back together. when i turned it back on, the belt snapped. so i went to vacuum place, got new belt, but when i put it on, with the green arrows lined up, it doesn’t have much suction. with the red arrows lined up, it just smells like its burning and i don’t want to break another belt! HELP!!
ANSWER : Take the front off the vacuum and check inside both the front portion and the canister for additonal clogs. Sometimes something will get caught in the impellor, causing the motor to overheat. Since there’s little suction and the smell, I’d guess this is what happened.

My floormate is not suctioning very well. Tech support told me to take out the brushes and put them back in and this helped for a little bit then it went back to not suctioning. deb
ANSWER : When you took the brushes out, was there hair wrapped around them? Sometimes they just need to be cleaned off. When you take them off, there is a belt they connect to that also goes around a gear — make sure the belt and gear don’t have hair wrapped around them either.

.Hope that helps!

It has no suction. It was fine yesterday. I washed the dirt container and the filter, let it dry and put it back in the vacuum. Today my vacuum isnt picking up any dirt and has no suction. When I took the hose out of the back, it started blowing dust and dirt out but still no suction.
ANSWER : Look for a place where the vacuum line has to turn in a near 90 degree turn. It’s easy for it to get stopped up there.
