A two-stage motor has two fans while a three stage has three fans. The Peripheral-Bypass Motor. In addition to the Thru-Flow and Tangential Bypass motors, there`s actually a third motor type we really haven`t addressed since it is not commonly used. This is called a Peripheral Bypass motor.
If all you hear from the vacuum unit is a click at the when you try to start the vacuum motor from inside the house, then the motor in the unit is dead and has to be replaced. A strong odor from the shellac, which coats the copper coil windings, is an indicator that the motor is about to or has burnt out.
If the unit runs for a few minutes then shuts off, the motor needs to be replaced. Central vacuum motors generally last for 800-1100 working hours. If your motor has run less than 800 hours or activates by jolting the canister, it may be possible to extend the life of the motor by replacing the carbon motor brushes.
A pump with two pump chambers connected in parallel to increase the exhaust volume is a one-stage type. The pump with one pump room is, of course, a one-stage type. Two-stage type: A pump with two pump chambers connected in series to increase the compression ratio is a two-stage type.
In short, if vacuum level is not an issue, a single stage vane pump may do the trick. Conversely, if deeper pressure with good vacuum performance is necessary, the dual stage rotary vane pump would be the best solution.
The most common reason for vacuum motors failing is overheating. Most `dry` vacuums have a flow-though motor. These motors use the air they have sucked up the dust with, to cool themselves. When there is a blockage, flow-though motors are unable to cool themselves due to the lack of airflow.
The most common problems found in vacuum cleaners are low suction force, excessive noise, burning smell, vacuum not turn on, and overheating. These issues can be fixed by either cleaning the device or replacing some parts of the device. At times, it is best to seek a professional to fix the cleaner effectively.
Plug the power cord into your power source. Now arc a wire across the low voltage terminals. You should see a little spark when you touch the terminals and you should hear a “click” inside the board. If there is no spark, then the transformer is bad.
A vacuum cleaner can run continuously for 30 – 60 min each time. The vacuum cleaner has no suction power. For example, a hair cannot be sucked up.
There are three main types of central vacuum cleaner motors: the flow through (or “through-flow”) motor, the peripheral bypass motor, and the tangential bypass motor. While each type of motor offers powerful suction, the way they channel air through their systems is what sets them apart from one another.
All suction motors, except for the very small battery operated motors, are universal type motors since they can operate with either AC (alternating current) or DC (direct current) power sources. Typically they are designed for best performance with AC at the normal household voltage.
A motor with two fans is called a two-stage motor; if it has three fans it is a three-stage motor. Each fan layer increases the water lift (sealed suction measurement), but decreases the air flow (CFM). Air driven power brushes work better with a motor with more fan stages.
Two-stroke (two-cycle) engines require you to mix the oil with the gas in exact amounts so the oil acts as a lubricant for the crankcase, while four-stroke engines take oil and gas separately. In a 2-stroke engine, it takes one full revolution (2 stages) to complete 1 power stroke.

ASHRAE recommends evacuation to below 1000 microns for moisture removal and below 500 microns after replacing a compressor. Some equipment manufacturers call for evacuation to 400 microns to ensure that harmful water vapor is removed from the system.

A 2 stage pump is a type of pump that uses two stages to move the fluid. The first stage moves the fluid up the pump while the second stage moves the fluid down the pump. This is different than a 1 or 3 stage pump where only one stage moves the fluid.
A two-phase motor is a system that has two voltages 90 degrees apart, which is no longer in use nowadays. The alternator is composed of two windings placed at 90 degrees from each other. They require 2 live and one ground wire that work in two phases.

I need a new motor for my electrolux 1590 machine. What is the difference between a 2 stage & a 3 stage motor?
ANSWER : If you haven’t got the new motor, the three stage has more suction. The 1590 CV had the three stage motor untin they changed to the two stage not long ago. You can get either one for your unit. The two stage should be a little less expensive.

ANSWER : The third wire is a hot wire that goes to the headlight.

ANSWER : You might not have the right motor. Take the old one with you because it should go right back in as easy it was to remove.

Sewing machine Guru needed 😉
Elna Grasshopper (new to me) circa 1950
The light works, but there was no hummm when knee pedal engaged.
I have the motor out, and it is very stiff to turn. I’m at a total loss when it comes to motors and electricity. It doesn’t smell burned, doesn’t smell at all beyond normal machine smells. (Yes, I made detailed notes and diagrams as I took said motor out!)
One other note. The long thing which my husband said might be a capacitor — it looks like
ANSWER : I just purchased a fairly tidy Elna ‘Grasshopper’ sewing machine (1951) with the same leaking capacitor problem. I carefully removed the capacitor for examination. It is actually three capacitors in one – no chance of a direct modern replacement, but anyone with those three capacitors, a couple bits of insulated wire, and a small soldering iron should be able to shoehorn them into the same space. There is a circuit diagram printed on the side of the original capacitor, showing one 0,2 micro-Farad capacitor between the two mains power buses (the two wires from the top of the original capacitor which are soldered to the top of the two outer brass bars where all the wires attach), and following on from each of those a 0,0025 micro-Farad capacitor (so, two of those), the other side of both of those joined together and going to the chassis – representing the one cable from bottom of the original capacitor, which is screwed down. Easier than it sounds – I just have to find those capacitors. They must be NON-polarised capacitors, rated for 250 Volts, and I plan to use radial (rather than axial) style, aluminium type ones – very common. From what I can gather, I believe they are needed for that lovely little motor to run properly – to have torque (‘oomph’) at start-up.....
.As to the motor not wanting to turn… difficult to say from a distance. Could it be that the ‘brushes’ are sticking – or even worn out? There are two, top and bottom, that ride on the commutator – the ring of bronze-colored squares on one end of the motor, behind the wiring. They are made of carbon, are what power the motor, and are held with hidden springs. With much use they wear down, but I would not expect them to be completely gone. The upper one is easiest to reach – there is a brass screw above it – careful the spring doesn’t get away. Only other thing would be fouling of the bushings that allow the axis of the motor to turn. A little penetrating oil could help there. The motor should turn very freely.

I have a kenmore canister model number 116.2645083 I need a replacement motor. I was given 2 different numbers: 1. 4147248 2. AC92FAUX200 I can find the 2nd motor, but it doesnt have the 4 wires like the original one. Can you tell me if this is the right motor? Thanks Becky

I have a 2 fluorescent light fixture in my bathroom. The right side light quit working. I took the starter out of the left side and put it in the right and it worked. Starter, right? I bought a package of 2 Leviton starters FS 2 15w. They didn’t work. Thinking bad, I returned it for another package. Still not working. The original starter is a Sylvania FS 2. Is it possible to have FOUR bad “new” starters? Do I need to replace it with the EXACT same starter? This light fixture is 38 years old. No
ANSWER : It is not likely that you had 4 bad starters.I assume you have more modern lights in it too(not 30 yrs old).Here is a link to Sylvania.It may be just that it requires certain something(who knows what)that only Sylvania has.It seems strange because they are all basically the same and a generic one seems like it would work.I also googled flourescent light starters and under one that talked about operation,it did refer to some older models.But like I said,it probably has newer lights so who knows what the heck.Well,here you go.You may also just want to call Sylvania and ask where you can find a replacement instead of paying $5 to ship $2 worth of parts.

Kenmore canister vacuum model 116-25512506. It has a 2 stage switch on the handle, the vacuum motor will not work, the carpet beater attachment does work, the vacuum motor will not cut on at all with either stage, 1st stage is vac only, 2nd is vac a carpet attachment. Carpet attachment will work, vac does not.
ANSWER : Try to find the reset button. It should be somwhere near the bottom area. It looks like a red dot that you can push inward. If you can press and hold the reset button, it will restart your suction and solve your problem.
