How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

Squeeze the cleaning trigger and hold it while pushing the PowerSteamer forward and pulling it back. Release the trigger and push the machine forward and back again over the same area. Repeat this process in overlapping sections over the carpet area to be cleaned.
So, you`ve decided to buy a Bissell Power Steam Pro Carpet Cleaner and are wondering what other cleaning solutions you can use in it. Well, you can use Baking soda, Vinegar, Castile soap, or even Warm Water. However, you must keep in mind that you should leave the carpets to dry after you use them.
How long does it take carpets and upholstery to dry after carpet cleaning? On the average, it will take approximately 2-4 hours for carpet and upholstery to dry after being carpet cleaned. To expedite the drying process, you will want to use a fan and increase your air circulation.
Expand. For maximum cleaning results, BISSELL does not recommend using cleaning products other than BISSELL specified in the Big Green. BISSELL formulas are specially formulated with more “active” ingredients, contain no dyes and are designed for use in the BISSELL Big Green.
Can I use cleaning formulas other than the BISSELL brand? It`s possible to use others, but we recommend against it. Our formulas contain no dyes, phosphates or optical brighteners, and will produce optimal cleaning performance when used in combination with BISSELL carpet cleaning machines.
Step 5: Rinse Your Carpets (Optional)

An optional step that we recommend if you have time is to go back over the cleaned carpet again with only hot tap water in the tank (no formula this time). This will remove any leftover formula and give your carpets an extra clean.

A: We only recommend using water and BISSELL deep cleaning formula in the machine, but you can clean the machine with warm water and mild detergent.
A possible cause might be that the tank is not properly seated. To assure the tank is seated properly, pick it up and re-seat is so it sits snugly on the unit. If this doesn`t fix the problem, make sure the tank is assembled properly. To make sure they are both latched properly, pick the tank up by its handle.
In a spray bottle, mix one cup of distilled water, one cup of distilled white vinegar, and one teaspoon of dishwashing liquid. Shake well to mix and label the bottle.
DIY carpet cleaner (for machines): 1/4 C vinegar + 4 Tbsp dish soap + 4 Tbsp fabric softener + 1/4 C hydrogen peroxide. Stir gently, then add mixture to an almost full gallon of very warm water. Then slowly add warm water to top it off. Gently tip the jug back & forth to mix (avoid suds and bubbles).
Open windows – air flow can help to improve drying times and opening windows can help, unless it is very humid outside. Use floor fans – running floor fans in areas with damp carpet will help to move the humid air created by evaporation out of the space, and dry the carpet more quickly.
After Cleaning

After vacuuming, allow your carpet to dry. If possible, open windows and doors to increase air circulation and ventilation. You can also use fans or air conditioners to speed up the process.

The Bissell carpet cleaner is our favorite machine for wet-cleaning wool. The truth is that you can use just about any carpet cleaner or vacuum to clean wool without damaging it; the key, as we`ve noted above, is knowing how to use the tools correctly. For carpet cleaners, we recommend the Bissell 86T3 Big Green.
Besides vinegar, baking soda can also be used in the Bissell powersteam pro carpet cleaner. This solution is great for removing pet odors, which can be embarrassing to visitors and unpleasant for residents. It is a great alternative to cleaning solutions that contain harmful chemicals.
Vinegar and baking soda are still the best solutions when it comes to a carpet stain or odours. All you have to do is combine the two substances with warm water and you have a highly effective homemade remedy for carpet cleaning.
If you`re cleaning carpets, the type of carpet fiber you`re dealing with also matters. Different materials have different tolerances for certain pH levels. You`ll want to use a solution that effectively breaks down dirt without damaging the fibers.
Yes, you should keep cleaning the carpet until the water is clear. This will ensure that your carpets are clean and free of dirt, dust, and other allergens. However, you should be careful not to scrub too hard or use too much water. Doing so can damage the carpet and lead to more stains in the future.
Don`t use carpet cleaner or carpet shampoo on your rugs, as the chemicals may be too strong and damage the fibers. Instead, use a rug shampoo, like Bissell Pro Max Clean and Protect, as the cleaning solution.
You can surely use the regular floor cleaner in your Bissell crosswave. Please note that if you use a different kind of water-based floor cleaning solution than the Bissell brand one included with your purchase, we recommend diluting it by half and using half of the standard amount on your CrossWave Pad and Floor Tool.
A: Although many of today`s chemicals are specially formulated to perform with either hot or cold water, hot water remains the top recommendation. Hot water makes the extraction process more efficient because it reduces the water`s surface tension, allowing it to clean faster.
Mix equal parts hot water and vinegar and pour in your carpet cleaner`s reservoir tank. Clean your carpets as per your cleaner`s instructions. Yes, vinegar might leave a temporary pickle smell in your home but it dissipates and disappears as your carpets dry.
Vacuuming carpet is very similar to changing the oil in a car in that it is an integral part of regular maintenance and keeping it in tip-top shape. Regular vacuuming removes soil and dirt that can damage the carpet fiber and therefore reduce the useful life of the carpet.
Most carpets typically need 6-10 hours to dry completely. However, it could take up to 24 hours to dry depending on the time of year your carpets are cleaned, and the air circulation, humidity and temperature in your home.
The best method of cleaning carpets is usually steam cleaning, which removes over 90% of dirt and bacteria from carpeting. Dry cleaning carpeting is also effective for ensuring carpets are ready for foot traffic as quickly as possible.

I need to clean a wool persian style area rug. Can I use my 1698 series Bissell PowerSteamer ProHeat to do this? If so, how?
ANSWER : Yes you can use on the rug. You will use just like on you carpet.

No Water My Bissell rug shampooer does not eject water or saop whan I pull the saop trigger on the handle. I checked both filters and they are clean. Then, I removed the container that sucks up the water and pulled the saop trigger, water barely came out of the tubes. I tried to clean the rug in our family room and the rug was not wet when I finished, no water coming out to clean the rug. HELP HELP HELP!!! I live in Colorado is there a Bissell repair shop near Denver, HELP!!! Thanks Dominick ema
ANSWER : Does water squirt out of the hose nozzle, if it does, then check the heater inside the handle asm. Make sure that where the tubes hook up to it are not clogged. If water doesn’t squirt, check for the seal at the bottom of the tank, it needs to be on the tank, not in the hole, this is for the soap bottle also, there is a seal on the bottom of it as well. The flow indictor cap is leaking air or maybe is too tight. If you had the top cover off, make sure that the tubes are routed right so as not to get pinched when the cover is put back on, the smart mix knob should be in the water setting and that the piston is on the bottom of the smart mix knob. Pump is bad. Try running a mix of vinegar and water to see if that unclogs the lines. Is the top cover and the base tight together in the back, sometimes the top breaks loose and it will raise up and it can’t spray, just re-fasten it down.

Bissell ProHeat Clearview Steam Cleaner – need steps to clean the clear input area. I have removed the four screws and need to know how to finish the removal of the clear plastic input area.
ANSWER : For the clear outer nozzle, there are 2 screws holding it in place. Remove those, then from the bottom lift it up. Sometimes the seal holds it really tight and you may have to carefully pry on the sides until it loosens up. Then when you put it back on, at the top are 2 tabs, make sure they snap into place then lower the nozzle and put the 2 screws back in.

My carpet cleaner (bissell proheat plus) is not steaming, dispensing cleaner. Seems like there’s a little thingy that should be spinning or turning….. When I work a small area of carpet, it just leaves behind dry blobs of carpet gunk like pet hair. I had to use a carpet sweeper to clean up. FYI – I filled the cleaning fluid container and after trying to clean the carpet, it did empty out but the carpet isn’t wet. Any tips? The manual doesn’t help.

I purchased a Pro Heat self propelled Bissell rug cleaner model 7950 from Target wherehouse on 4-26-06. I used it once and all was fine. The next time that I went to use it the smart mix for the cleaning formula would not dispense formula.I called Bissell consumer services and was told to take it to Starks Vaccumn in Sherwood, Or. ANSWER : I assume that it is spraying water? Is the smart mix knob turning freely from one point to the end? If not then there is a problem with the smart mix asm. With liquid in the soap bottle, push the valve in to see if liquid comes out ok, couild be that the valve is bad. Is the seal on the valve at the bottom of the bottle, it has to be on that and not just sitting in the hole. You might try running a mix of water and vinegar thru it, maybe it is clogged up.

.How do I attach and use the shampooing attachment…
.Posted by rottylvr on May 08, 2008
.I have a Kirby Vacuum and Carpet Cleaner that I know how to use, all except the attachment that I am not sure about. I am not sure if it is a vacuuming attachment or can I attach it and use it to clean my couch, I do not have the user guide for my vacuum as I got it from my son’s ex girlfriend in lieu of money she owed me. It looks like it should be used for shampooing things like stairs and furniture, but for the life of me I cannot figure it out! Can you please help me? Tell me how to attach it if it is supposed to be used to clean stairs and furniture or tell me where I can find the user guide to look at and see how to use it……Oh by the way I have a 160 pound rottweiler that tries to live on my furniture and my couch is in desperate need of cleaning, this is my only day off and I have spent all day cleaning carpets due to my dog and would love to clean my couch before returning to work and putting my dog in the back yard now that it is warm enough for him to be outside all day.
Thanks,
Desperate to reclaim her couch

.Hello,
I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. My suggestion is that you contact the Kirby Co in Cleveland listed below and they will instruct you either to down load a owner’s manual or they will mail one out to you, there might be a local Kirby dealer in your area that might have a manual as well. Also, there is a separate shampoo head that will be in the owner’s manual, you remove the vacuum head and bag assm and attach the shampoo head, make sure you use genuine Kirby shampoo for the carpet. So if you need further assistance, please feel free to contact your local vacuum cleaner dealer in your area or in the yellow pages, or contact the factory phone number or website to further assist you with your questions.
