How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

Model and serial numbers are printed on a label, which is usually located on the back or on the base of the unit. The serial number follows the model number.
Check to see if the collection water tank outside the bladder is full. The float will activate to cut off suction. Empty the collection tank and test for suction. If there is still no suction at this time, please visit a BISSELL Authorized Service Center.
Locate the brush reset button on the lower back right of the vacuum. Press the button to reset the brushroll To ensure the brush has been reset, plug the vacuum back into the electrical outlet.
Inspect the vacuum hose for any small holes, kinks, or cracks. Any cracks or holes will decrease the amount of suction in the hose and will not allow the carpet extractor to properly remove liquid from the floor. The hose will need to be replaced if there is damage.
There could be several factors as to why your BISSELL PowerFresh steam mop is not producing steam. First, check to make sure the unit is plugged in and is in a working outlet. Next, check to make sure there is water in the tank. It is very important to make sure you are ONLY using water to fill the tank.
REGISTER YOUR NEW BISSELL PRODUCT

You can find your product serial number on the label, which is usually found on the back of the unit base, the serial number follows the model number.

Most cleaning methods simply can`t remove all the old hair, dust mites, dirt, soapy residues and chemicals. After the cleaning crew leaves, the gunk remaining in your carpeting acts like a magnet for a whole new layer of grime.
The spray tip may be clogged. Use a paperclip and insert it into the spray tip to remove a clog. Now plug back in, making sure you are using a working outlet. You will know, as the Ready light will begin to blink when plugged in.
Soak and Clean the Nozzle

Submerge the nozzle in the warm vinegar, soak it for at least eight hours, and then remove the nozzle and rinse well with warm water. Use a toothpick to gently remove any remaining deposits from each nozzle, rinse again, and then dry with a towel.

The details about your model and serial number can be found on a sticker on the underside of the vacuum. The serial number is printed on the label on the right side of the unit. The serial number is located on the outer right side of the unit.
Where do I find my Model Number? Model information is displayed on the product`s “DATAPLATE” label on the bottom or backside of the unit.
Built-in HeatWave Technology® maintains consistent water temperature while cleaning for heated cleaning. Designed to easily clean carpets, upholstery, stairs, area rugs, auto interiors, and more. With a lightweight design, the BISSELL® SpotClean® ProHeat® is easy to use and easy to store.
Can I use cleaning formulas other than the BISSELL brand? It`s possible to use others, but we recommend against it. Our formulas contain no dyes, phosphates or optical brighteners, and will produce optimal cleaning performance when used in combination with BISSELL carpet cleaning machines.
A carpet cleaner is a device that mechanically applies soap and water to a carpet from a clean water tank, scrubs, and then suctions up the byproduct into a dirty water tank. Carpet cleaners work by applying and suctioning up water.
If you find that your CleanView vacuum is hard to push, you may need to adjust the height adjustment dial. The highest setting should be used for high pile and most shag carpet.
If you don`t vacuum your carpet, the dirt will break down carpet fibers and create a breeding ground for dust mites and bacteria. In addition, your home will begin to smell musty from the dirt, mites, and other organisms settling into the fibers.
We recommend deep cleaning your carpets and rugs at least twice a year, however, if you have pets, kids or a smoking habit, we recommend deep cleaning every quarter. This will keep your carpets grime free and in the best shape possible.
Make sure the power cord and the plug are not damaged. If either are, contact our Consumer Care team. Make sure the outlet works by plugging in a cell phone charger or small appliance. If it doesn`t work, check another outlet.
The most common problems found in vacuum cleaners are low suction force, excessive noise, burning smell, vacuum not turn on, and overheating. These issues can be fixed by either cleaning the device or replacing some parts of the device. At times, it is best to seek a professional to fix the cleaner effectively.
Check for a plugged hose:

Plugged vacuum hoses are sometimes the reason for a loss in suction. Hoses can get clogged with hair, dust bunnies, string, or anything else that can`t pass through the other end of the hose. Airways inside the machine should be looked at as well. Wherever there is an air passage, check it.

Start the engine and spray

Scope out all the vacuum lines under the hood. Then start the engine and spray each connection with a light stream of water. If a connection sucks in the water, you`ve found your leak. A vacuum leak can cause a rough idle, high rpm, poor gas mileage and even trigger a check-engine light.

Laundry Detergents aren`t Formulated for Carpet Cleaning

Cleaning solutions are specifically formulated to clean and not damage the machines they`re used in and the material they`re treating. Laundry soap is designed to be used in washing machines to clean clothing.

Yes, you should keep cleaning the carpet until the water is clear. This will ensure that your carpets are clean and free of dirt, dust, and other allergens. However, you should be careful not to scrub too hard or use too much water. Doing so can damage the carpet and lead to more stains in the future.
The biggest reason for smelly carpets after a cleaning is simple. Underneath your carpet is a layer of backing or padding. If that bottom layer gets wet and isn`t dried properly, it can give off an odor. The good news is that as the backing or padding dries out, the sour smell should go away all on its own.

I have a bissel pro heat carpet cleaner that doesn’t spray cleaner solution, everything else works, but I don’t know whether it’s the pump or the heat unit.I’m assuming that the pump unit must be bad since all the connections are in place, but from the view of the pump I am not sure what drives it.
ANSWER : I have a bissell steam cleaner 1698. I have had it for a few years. First and last time I used it I was sorely disappointed. How was the word steam integrated into the name. I saw no steam. Ended up soaking my couch, soaked spots on my rug and now steam in sight. Also poor suction. Well a few days ago I thought I would give it another try on my couch. Just maybe I read the instructions wrong, but it pretty simple. Again disappointment. I saw nothing that resembled steam even though the light was bright red. I believe this is false advertising. I know I paid a lot for this machine and I feel ripped off.

My bissell pro heat 2x does not **** up the water from either the upholstery cleaner or carpet cleaner. Any thoughts as to why? The water and heat functions work it just does not pick up
ANSWER : First check the motor duct gasket. The motor duct gasket is visible once the tank is removed. It is located underneath the handle on the top of the base of the machine. It has a black rubber coating around it. If there is no suction there please let us know. If your machine does have suction at the duct, continue to check the following:
.
.- Ensure the Ready Tools Dial is set to the appropriate setting (Floor Cleaning or Hose Attachments).
– Remove the tank from the machine and ensure the tank lid is attached properly. The front window must first hook onto the lip of the bottom of the tank and then drape over the tank. Latch the bottom tank to the top tank lid. THIS LID CANNOT BE ATTACHED PROPERLY IF THE TANK IS NOT REMOVED FROM THE MACHINE.
– Make sure the Water Tank is not full on the outside of the bladder. If it is, empty the tank.
– Ensure the hose is firmly attached to the back of the machine. If not, re-insert as necessary by twisting into place.
– The machine must be in an upright, locked position and set to the Hose Attachment setting. If the handle is slightly tilted back while using, it will create a small gap at the suction inlet (where handle meets gasket, above the Bottom Tank) which will cause little or no suction.
– Check the red Tank Lint Screen for debris. If the Lint Screen is dirty, the unit will have poor suction. Clean the Lint Screen if necessary.
– If the float flap door in the tank lid is activating prematurely when you turn the machine on, this flap door should be replaced. This tank may need to be emptied.
– Check the Tank Lid and Tank for damage.

Cleaner Solution Not Dispensing On Bissell 9200 Pro Heat Cleaner
ANSWER : I haven’t had this particular issue (yet… knock on wood!) with my Bissell, but remember that the shampoo will not dispense with no water in the tank (the most common cause of this issue because sometimes you think it has water but it doesn’t) or water not flowing through the machine due to clogged sprayers– another issue– but since you’re getting water on the floor that is not your issue– or with the handle locked in position. If none of that fixes it, try removing the shampoo container, stand over a sink, and push your finger up inside the grommet where the shampoo container mates with the Bissell. Shampoo should dribble out. If it doesn’t, unscrew the grommet (holding the container upside down of course so the shampoo doesn’t gush out) and use your finger and running water to try and the grommet cleaned out.
.
.If this isn’t helping, it may be that your soap pump or soap dispensing trigger switch are defective.

Bissell Pro-Heat Pro-Tech Carpet Cleaner
ANSWER : Put the piston on the bottom part of the knob, You want the the knob to be at the water only setting when it goes into the slot. After the top is pushed all of the way on, turn the auto-mix knob to see if it is turning easily. If it doesn’t stop, and wants to keep turning, then you probably need a new knob.
