How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

Solid red:

There is an Error. Tap Clean for the robot to repeat the error. Errors are also shown in the iRobot HOME App on WiFi-enabled models.

If your Roomba® i Series Robot Vacuum is not turning on or is not able to charge, rebooting your robot tends to solve most related issues. To reboot your Roomba: Press and hold the CLEAN button for 20 seconds. After you release the button, the light ring will show a white clockwise swirl while it reboots.
Dead battery

If you see the flashing red light or don`t see any lights on, place the Roomba on the charging dock.

If the red light ring around the CLEAN button is pulsing, the Roomba i Series battery charge is too law to start cleaning.
If a malfunction occurs during the cleaning process, the ring-shaped indicator of the device will flash rapidly in red and the voice message will turn on.
Flashing red indicates a problem with battery charging. Either the charger is bad, or the charging circuit in your Roomba is bad.
You can easily check the status of the battery in the iRobot® HOME App. A battery icon will be displayed in the top-right corner, indicating the current status of the battery.
Check the Battery

If your robot won`t start, it likely means the battery is not holding a charge. Plug the battery into a power outlet and allow it to charge fully, and then insert it back into the vacuum and try again. Still having issues? You may need a replacement battery.

While the iRobot® HOME App provides many benefits, a Wi-Fi or App connection is not required for Roomba® and Braava jet® to clean. For Roomba®, Clean, Dock, and Spot Clean do not require a connection to the app.
The Roomba Red is a 4000 Series iRobot V… acuum. These devices are really pretty amazing at what they do.
The light on the Home Base® will go on for approximately four (4) seconds and then turn off and remain off while the robot continues to charge. The light ring on your robot will illuminate to signal that it is charging.
When the battery level is low, the Eufy Robovac red light might turn on. Connect the device to the docking station and let it charge there until the battery is fully charged to fix the problem. After charging, the red light ought to go away.

e Series Robots: Press and Hold the Home and Spot Clean and CLEAN button down for 20 seconds then release. 900 Series Robots: Press and Hold the Dock and Spot Clean and CLEAN button down until all LEDs illuminate.

Charging time under normal conditions is at least 2 hours. For best results, use only the battery type compatible with your robot and ensure that it is an authentic iRobot Lithium Ion/NiMH battery that comes with Roomba or purchased from iRobot authorized dealers.
Description. Charging error one (1) means your Roomba® or Braava® cannot sense the battery is installed. Your robot will not charge if it cannot detect the battery. The error indicator will vary by model. Please remove and reinstall the battery to clear this error.
Charging Error 7 indicates the battery is not charging. Check that you are using an authentic iRobot® Lithium Ion Battery. Charging errors can occur with counterfeit batteries. Ensure that Roomba is being charged at room temperature.
Error nine (9) means the bumper is stuck and is not moving freely. Briskly tap the bumper several times to dislodge any debris that may be trapped underneath, and then press CLEAN to restart.
Charging error five (5) means your Robot`s charging system isn`t working correctly. Please remove and reinstall the battery to clear this error.
With proper care, your robot`s battery should last at least 2-3 years before it needs to be replaced. Here are some battery maintenance tips to extend battery life and keep Roomba® cleaning at peak performance: Only use iRobot® batteries.
Roomba® should charge in the following manner: If you are using a charger, the charger should have a solid green power indicator when it is plugged into an outlet. If you are using a Home Base®, the power indicator should blink approximately once every four (4) seconds when plugged into the charger or outlet.
If its battery gets low before finishing a cleaning cycle, Roomba® automatically returns to the Home Base®/Clean Base™ to recharge, providing that it was started from its Home Base®/Clean Base™.
Verify there is no debris build-up on the charging contacts. If found, clean the charging contacts on both the Roomba® and the Home Base® with lightly dampened melamine foam. Examine Home Base®/Clean Base® line cord and check for any damage such as cuts, or fraying. Ensure the plug is securely inserted into the outlet.
Factors may include having a bad motor, incompatible pump applications or poor ventilation. Constant overheating may indicate a malfunction.
iRobot Roomba vacuums can operate even with simple ambient light, but not in total darkness. What may help with either the i7 or s9 robots is to run a training mission and/or clean your floors with the closet light on until your floor plan map is complete.

I have iRobot Roomba 4210 and I have a problem with charge battery. The battery is new. When I charging a battery in other iRobot Roomba the battery was full charged. When I charging in my iRobot Roomba the battery was empty. My fast charger is OK.
ANSWER : The charging circuit on the main board is fried. This is a common issue. You need some good electronic repair skills, and equipment, to replace the problem components

Roomba Discovery My Roomba turns on and moves but the brushes won’t turn. Someone told me that I had forgotten to put in the yellow and black end bearings, but I did. Help, I miss my Roomba
I have a Roomba 530, I have had it for 2 weeks and really loved it. I have followed all the cleaning instructions etc.. Then the Roomba wanted it’s brushes cleaning “please clean Roombas brushes” So thinking that something was stuck I removed and cleaned the brushes, (yellow tabs on and in place by the way)
ANSWER : I read somewhere that you need to clear the software in case there is a glitch. To do this, take the battery out and then, simultaneously hold down the “spot” and “clean” buttons for 30 seconds. Replace battery. This has worked for my Discovery model.

Roomba 560, the small red light above the schedule button will not reset and the roomba will not run. The problem started when I the roomba sat dead for 12 hours. I tried the spot dock reset trick with no luck. The clock and sunday light stay let also.
ANSWER : This work ok for me ihave a 560 thanks

Scooba battery light turns red as soon as irobot starts
ANSWER : Do you leave the battery on charge long enough? Try 4-hours up to overnight. If so, then the battery is probably at the end of it’s useful life. Getting a new battery depends on cost versus life expectancy of the robot and whether it does the job you want it to do.

My Roomba 560 does not automatically dock as advertised either..
ANSWER : You may not believe this, but the new 500 series lighthouse virtual walls have both infrared and radio frequency communication. How they work and associate with the Roomba is pretty complicated. The best posting I’ve ever seen about how they work is here:
http://www.robotreviews.com/chat/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=11048

Check out that link to understand how the communication works.

If your Roomba is contained by the virtual walls, then you can assume the IR sensor on your Roomba us good….you should test that though. Then you might have to replace the “home base” which could have a bad IR transponder . New ones can be found for reasonable price at www.RoboticVacParts.com or you could order straight from iRobot for twice the price.

If the Roomba is not contained by the virtual walls, then the IR sensor on the Roomba is likely bad and you’ll need to change the bumper on your Roomba. Again ….parts are available through ebay, or www.RoboticVacParts.com. Follow this link if you need it.

Irobot discovery Hi, My irobot discovery charges fine, shows green (fully charged), starts running and flashes amber, then finally after about ten minutes stops and shows sold red.
ANSWER : It sounds like the battery is shot. These batteries only work for a couple of years and then they won’t accept a charge any more. A common mistake people make is recharging them before they need it. This will make the battery “lazy”

Battery charge I just purchased a new battery pack insert for my Roomba, Replacement
was a breeze and it now works great. My question is; The last battery I
bought ( not from you) was a full cased roomba battery pack that didn’t
last a year. Roomba says leave the r Roomba charging all the time so
it’s ready when you need it, and that’s nice but I feel that leaving it
charging like that it will kill the battery faster as it is always warm
to the touch. These battery’s should last at least 5
ANSWER : Dave you are correct. You should never over-charge anything like a Roomba, Cel Phone, etc. That will kill a bettery very quickly.
