How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

If the motor filter (located below the bag) is dirty, hand wash with soapy water. Rinse with clear water, squeeze out excess water, and allow it to dry completely before returning it to the vacuum. Insert a new dust bag and close the cover.
Check service panel for tripped breakers/blown fuses. If breaker is tripped, reset it. If fuse is blown, replace it. If vacuum cleaner is plugged in, be sure power button is in the off position before resetting breaker/changing fuse.
Check that the vacuum cleaner is plugged into a working power outlet and that fuses and breakers don`t need resetting. An activated thermal cut-out due to a blockage is the next most likely cause of the problem. Check for blockages in the hose and filters, and remove any obstructions that you find.
Rinse the filter
Any fine dust remaining in the filter can usually be removed with a gentle rinse under a cold tap – hold the filter under the running water until the water runs clear. You shouldn`t need to use any detergent – just water.
This overload reset switch button (part number 8191505) is for vacuums. Overload reset switch button 8191505 resets the overload switch when you push it. Unplug the vacuum before installing this part. Wear work gloves to protect your hands.
Clog located in the vacuum hose
Turn the unit on and feel the suction at the end of the hose handle. If there is no or low suction, then the clog is in the hose. You can remove the clog by running a long, stiff object through the hose, such as a butter knife, starting at the wall end.
Vacuum cleaners are fairly simple machines. They need power to be transmitted to the vacuum to create a suction force that lifts debris. So, the usual areas that cause suction loss include the wrong height setting, stuck rollers, a faulty gasket, a broken vacuum belt, a filled bag, or a clogged hose.
One of the easiest ways to increase vacuum cleaner suction is to empty the dust bag or container. Dust containers need to have enough space for airflow, otherwise, they could get clogged and have less suction power. Regularly check your dust compartment and empty or change it when it`s already 70-80% full.
The most common problems found in vacuum cleaners are low suction force, excessive noise, burning smell, vacuum not turn on, and overheating. These issues can be fixed by either cleaning the device or replacing some parts of the device. At times, it is best to seek a professional to fix the cleaner effectively.
A strong odor from the shellac that coats the copper coil windings is an indicator that the motor is about to or has burnt out. If the motor is still running, even if it turns on and off by itself as it is heating and cooling, you can still run the motor until it gives up for good.

Kenmore progressive upright filter is being bypassed, clogging screen at outlet. Tried new filter, no change. 7 or 8 passes with the vacuum and the screen at outlet gets clogged.

Unbeknownst to me, someone took the bag out of my Kenmore Progressive vacuum and failed to replace it. I have been vacuuming without a bag for months, and today the vacuum stopped sucking. When I opened up the front to replace the bag, tons of dirt and dust came pouring out. I thoroughly cleaned the vacuum, put in a new bag, but still no sucking power. Just dust coming from the rear vents where one of the filters is. Is the vacuum ruined, or is it a simple solution of buying a new filter?
ANSWER : Sounds like you need to buy a new motor. All that grit and dust will ruin a motor and I’m surprised it lasted as long as it did.

The original belt on my upright Kenmore Progressive broke and I replaced it with the spare that was in the vacuum. The vacuum and spare belt are about 10 years old. Then the spare broke after one vacuuming session and there was a burning smell coming from the vacuum. I ordered new belts and replaced it with the new belt. It seems to be working fine with no smell. I checked the belt after I vacuumed the family room and although it was in tact, the belt was very hot. Is that normal? Should t

Hello,
I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. Typically the top filter of which is the sponge is washable but the HEPA filter is not, it can be brushed off and vacuum off with another vacuum, but the best filtration is to replace the HEPA filter and to wash the sponge filter, if the sponge filter get to bad then replace the sponge filter as well. Or, you can check with your local vacuum cleaner dealer in your area or to contact the manufacturer’s website and or phone #. My upright kenmore progressive vacuum will not suction up when using the sweeper. It will suction things when I use one of the tools. I have put in a new bag and have tried to see if anything is blocking the bottom. It sometimes makes a very loud noise when I try to vacuum. If I press the intell clean on and off yellow button the noise may go away but it still does not work.
ANSWER : Double check hose placement, making sure you have the hose inserted into the correct slot. The long attachment nozzle stores in the front hole on the right, and the sucking hose inserts into the rear hole on the right. I know this is too simple of a solution, but worth double checking. Our cleaning service claimed our Progressive upright had quit sucking when vacuuming, and that was the problem. They had used the attachments and then reinserted the hose into the attachment hole. It also caused the vacuum to be very loud as the main sucking hole was open. Hope it’s an easy fix and not something serious.
