The black brush lead wire attaches to the foot switch. It probably got pulled out when the unit was disassembled. Look at the side of the switch and where the power cord connects, you’ll see 2 holes. The black wire for the light goes in one hole, the black brush lead wire goes in the other.
.the above link shows you how to change the belt on the g-series kirbys but it will apply to the heritage edition as well…the only difference is the color…some of the arrows may be missing on the front belt lifter knob…but they are little differences…
.hope this helps!!!
.Good luck! Greg
From motor – black to switch / white to white from power cord
The black wire from the power hooks to the off end of the switch and the black wire from the motor hooks to the on end. Third post is not used. The two white wires are connected to each other with a small twist on wire nut.

.I can’t figure out how to get the belt engaged on my Kirby Heritage 84. There are very simple instructions on the front assembly; however, the belt doesn’t engage with the rotor, and the beater bar does not spin. When I have the front twisting section on the “Belt On” setting, it seems as though it actually disengages the belt. I see no faults in any of the mechanical parts, but just can’t get the belt to go on the rotor.
(I purchased this machine @ a garage sale on Saturday. It’s in perfect condition.)
My vacuum cleaner is a Kirby 84 Legend.
I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. You can always check your owner’s manual but the Kirby has a dial on the front of the machine and you needs to dial the belt off of the fan pulley counter clock wise and to check to see if the Kirby bell housing will release @ the top so that you can remove the bell housing. If not then remove the bottom plate and take out the brushroll on one side and then slide the belt off of the brushroll. Then you can slide the new belt onto the brushroll to the center and then re-insert the Kirby brushroll with the screw heads facing downward then you can replace the bottom plate – then use the Kirby spoon or hook to dial the belt onto the fan pulley clock wise. Once that is done then plug in the Kirby and try to vacuum to see if the Kirby is picking up properly, if not repeat the process.
