How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

If there is a strong burning smell coming from the motor area of your Dyson DC14 or DC07 then it is most likely that your motor has burnt out.
A clogged filter in a Dyson vacuum can create a muffled sucking sound or a high-pitched squealing during use. Additionally, as the filter fills with dirt and debris over time, all the built-up debris begins to emit a burnt-smelling odor. You may need to remove and clean out the vacuum`s filter.
If your Dyson upright vacuum cleaner has a rubber burning smell and/ or you have lost suction from the base of the vacuum cleaner, then check your belt as it has probably snapped. Ignore this for any Dyson ball model uprights, yes they have a belt but the belt very rarely if ever snaps.
Most Dyson vacuums have a built in safety system that stops the machine if it begins to overheat. This usually happens because the filters need washing or your machine is blocked. Carry out the performance checks, and if your machine cuts out unplug and leave for at least 2 hours to cool down.
A strong odor from the shellac that coats the copper coil windings is an indicator that the motor is about to or has burnt out. If the motor is still running, even if it turns on and off by itself as it is heating and cooling, you can still run the motor until it gives up for good.
Burning smell can indicate motor damage

If you suspect that the motor is damaged, you should not continue to use the vacuum cleaner! The cause of motor damage is usually wear and tear or damage caused by prolonged improper use (e.g. overheating). In most cases, it is not worth repairing.

If your Dyson vacuum cleaner is making a loud vibrating or revving noise. First thing to try is empty your bin and make sure there are no blockages, if that doesn`t solve it then remove the brushbar and then try switching your Dyson back on again.
Check the LED light to determine the battery level. A solid blue light indicates that the machine is in normal operating mode. A flashing blue light indicates that there is no power, and the battery needs to be charged for a minimum of 3.5 hours.
This usually happens because the filters need washing or your machine is blocked. If your machine continues to overheat, please refrain from using it until it has cooled down sufficiently and then carry out the performance checks.
As the cleaner head and filter fills with dirt and debris over time, all the built-up debris begins to emit a burnt-smelling odour. You may need to remove and clean out the vacuum`s filter. We need to advise you to stop using your machine and request that you contact your local customer support team.
Cleaning your machine If your machine is dusty, wipe with a damp lint-free cloth. Look for blockages in the air inlet holes on the filter and the small aperture inside the loop amplifier. Use a soft brush to remove dust and debris. Don`t use detergents or polishes to clean your machine.

Loud motor with burning smell – Dyson DC14 Animal Bagless Upright Cyclonic Vacuum
ANSWER : Motor bad if in warranty pls send to service

Hello, I have a problem with my Eureka Powerline bagged upright vacuum. It has a 12 amp motor and is model #4352, Type D. It was probably bought new in 1998. My problem is, while vacuuming today the motor seemed to slow down all of the sudden and then began smelling like burning rubber. I shut the vacuum off to check for blockages but could not find anything blocked. When I then turned it on again it runs but seems to only be running at 1/2 the motor speed and still has the rubber buring smell.
ANSWER : It sounds like a rubber sealing in the motor has come loose and is being constantly rubbed against the walls of the motor with would cause the smell and loss of motor speed caused by the fricton of rubber against the rod so if you can get to the motor try to open it and see if you can get it if not take it to a small engine repair service hope this was helpful:)

How do I replace the brush on my dyson dc14 – Dyson DC14 Animal Bagless Upright Cyclonic Vacuum
ANSWER : Hi its Darran at Dyson.

If your DC14 has a brush control, we would only recommend that a suitably trained person attempts to replace the brush bar.

We can arrange a repair so that one of our engineers can replace this for you, and as part of the repair they would be able to look at any other issues you may be having with your machine.

If you would like to discuss your options, please contact us on 0800 298 0298 (UK) or 1866MYDYSON (US).
