How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

This usually occurs if the dust cannister is too full or the filters are clogged and the motor wasn`t getting enough cooling air passing over it.
Blockages or dirty filters may cause this to happen, the safety cut off will activate and switch off the electrical supply. If the cleaner has cut out, simply unplug and check for a blockage or dirty filters.
Why won`t my power unit shut off? Make sure the unit is in the Auto mode and that there is not a hose plugged into a wall valve. Unplug the low volt wire at the side of the unit, if the unit continues to run, the relay in the pc board is faulty and the entire pc board needs to be replaced.
Check the Rotator Brush and Wheels

Sometimes pieces of string or other objects get wrapped around your vacuum`s rotating brush or around the wheels of the vacuum. Unplug your vacuum. Turn it over and have a look at the wheels and brush. If you see any pieces of string or objects lodged there, remove them.

Problems can occur when overused or clogged filters cause the vacuum motor to overheat. This not only shortens the motor life but causes a loss of suction. In some cases, total motor burn out can occur.
The average life expectancy of a mid-range vacuum cleaner is about six years. You can fix or replace things like blocked filters, jammed brush rolls, frayed hoses, worn-out stick vac batteries and broken accessories yourself.

Hoover Windtunnel On/Off switch will not turn Off…Switch seems to work O.K. when pressed directly but not with handle switch…It will turn on but not off..Cam seems to be intact on switch actuator..How does switch come out? Thanx
ANSWER : Take the handle off, then remove the tool holder, then you can get to the switch. Just has tabs on each side of switch, depress them and push it out. These switches will do this after awhile, replacing them is usually the way to correct the problem.

.Hello,
I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. The best way to clean the HEPA filter is to take it outside and use a blower over the trash can and blow off the dust and dirt, or use things like an old paint brush and brush it off, or you can vacuum it off with another canister vacuum or shop vac if you have an extra one. For the best filtration is to replace it, there fore the air flow will catch most of the dust and dirt and then you would have to watch how fast it gets dirty and then do the maintenance.

Hoover Bagless Hello,      My Hoover bag less (Model U5280-900) is not picking up dirt like it should.  The brush roll is spinning fine, but the bristles on it are only about one quarter inch long.  I am wondering how long they should be.  The vacuum is quite a few years old.  Do you think it is time to replace the brush roll.  Could you email me at [email protected] about this topic.  The product bar below did not contain my model no.  The correct model no. is above in my message.  Thanks
ANSWER : If the belt is more than six months old then change it even if it is not broken. then replace your filters if that doesnt work than check the hoses for a clog drop a marble down them and make sure it comes out.

Is there a fuse in the hoover wind tunnel model 6425-920, the vacuum just shut off during operation and will not re start with the switch. What should I attempt? Thank you.
ANSWER : There actually IS a fuse/buss of sorts, if you really stretch the definition, anyways…so if your switch checked out good, and your outlet didn’t fizzle out and blow a house fuse or trip a breaker, in the machine base, near the motor, there is a “Thermtrol”. Its purpose is to prevent overheating, so if your machine got hot, then stopped and would not start again…the manuals and experts recommend unplugging the machine, letting it cool for a half hour or so, then clear any possible blockages, and try again…If you’re still not getting any power, check your wiring from wall outlet to machine…then from base to switch..If your wiring is all good, connections tight and right, you might have a faulty/failed thermal regulator.

Hope this helps someone 🙂

Wind tunnel by Hoover, vacuum will not turn off by using switch on upright handle. do not see a way to get to switch. modle no. U5458-900
ANSWER : Follow the cord and look for screws inside the bag compartment at the top. a panel should lift off allowing access to switch and cord. If swtch is melted it must be replaced with special hoover switch kit which has new wire and heavier duty switch. be sure to follow original path of cord to switch.
