A carbon brush, also known as a motor brush, is the small part of the motor that conducts electrical current between the stationary wires (stator) and the rotating wires (rotor) of a motor or generator. The brush is typically made up of one or more carbon blocks and can come with one or more shunts or terminals.
Brushed DC motors work by having the coil rotate inside the surrounding magnets. The rotation of the coil causes the contact between commutator and brush to alternate, therefore switching the current flow through the coil. As a result, the brushed DC motor can operate.
A carbon brush is a really just a small square of carbon that is used to carry a current through your electric motor. Without a carbon brush, the electric motor wouldn`t work.
Carbon brushes are found in many DC motors and it is essential they are properly maintained and replaced when necessary to ensure optimal performance of motors and reduce the risk of downtime.
Major materials of carbon brushes are lampblack, cokes, pitches, and tars. Electrographite brushes: produced by a high-temperature process (2,200–2,800°C) of graphitization.
For slightly greasy commutators, it is advisable to thoroughly clean with a clean dry cloth. If a greasy film remains, one can use a clean cloth moistened with a dry chlorine-free solvent leaving no residues after evaporation. However make sure to remove all the carbon brushes first as they are very absorbent.
Brushes in motors and generators conduct electricity. They pass electric current between the stationary and rotating parts of the motor. Brushless motors have none of these current-carrying carbon brushes. Brushed motors should be routinely inspected for carbon brush wear due to physical contact during commutation.
While not all carbon brushes look the same or are accessed in the same ways, this explanation should assist you no matter what DC motor you`re working with. For reference, here are a couple of examples of carbon brushes: To locate your motor`s carbon brushes, consult your motor`s manual or wiring diagram.
Brushless DC Motors. Brushless DC motors operate on the same principle of magnetic attraction and repulsion as brush motors, but they are constructed somewhat differently. Instead of a mechanical commutator and brushes, the magnetic field of the stator is rotated by using electronic commutation.
A brushed DC motor is made up of 4 basic components; the stator, the rotor ( or armature ), brushes, and commutator.
As a carbon brush wears down, its tendency to spark will increase. If you observe these little fireworks through your tool`s cooling vent, it may be time to replace the carbon brush.
Brushless DC (BLDC) motors

Because the windings are fixed, direct electrical connections can be made to them easily. As a result, there is no need for a mechanical commutator and brushes. Figure 5: In a BLDC motor, the magnets (blue and green) are on the rotor and the windings (copper) are on the stator.

AC induction motors and BLDC motors do not depend upon the mechanical system (brushes) to control current. The AC and BLDC motors pass current through the stator (electromagnet) which is connected to AC power directly or via a solid-state circuit.
Brushed motor life is limited by the brush type and can attain 1,000 to 3,000 hours on average, while brushless motors can attain tens of thousands of hours on average, as there are no brushes to wear. The limiting factor is the wear on the bearings.
All DC motors are built of 3 main sub-assemblies; the stator, the rotor and the brush system.
Many universal motor malfunctions are caused by wearing down of the carbon brushes, the soft blocks of carbon that complete the electrical contact to the motor`s commutator. When these brushes become worn, the motor will spark, and electrical contact may be incomplete.
The grade of the brush is usually found stamped on the face of the carbon. The grade indicates the material composition of the brush.
The term “carbon brush” appeared in electrical engineering history with the change to materials actually made from copper wire, which looked like a brush, to graphite and carbon. Carbon brushes have been evolving for decades. Today, they remain indispensable hardware for DC electrical machines.
A small amount of sparking is normal. Small sparks may occur until the carbon brushes bed in properly. Little minute sparks are often present but as long as they are very small should not indicate a problem.
When new carbon brushes are supplied, the end of the brush needs to be shaped to fit the arc of the commutator. This process is called `bedding in`. These brushes have not been shaped at all and the current can only pass through the small area at the centre of the brush, which has caused the sparking and brush wear.
Cutting carbon brushes should be avoided as it`s too risky.

The best option is to sand or file brushes down carefully a bit at a time (using a fine a sand paper or a file) until they fit the desired brush holder of your machine.

A brushed motor appears to have two coils around the armature of the rotor, while brushless motors have tightly wound coils on the armature of the stator. With a brushed motor, you`ll notice that the armature is connected to the brushes.

My model F5906-900 — problem is the brushes have stoped working… I pulled the brush assembly out by holding the two tabs, and all seems clean and the brush assembly rotates easly… onced the brush assembly is removed. ANSWER : (1) Assure the Brush Control on the hood is NOT set to the OFF position.
.(2) Remove the brush assembly by pulling/unlatching it from base on each side.
.(3) Does one of the brushes have the drive pin present? It should be about ¼ inch square, and two inches long. It attaches the brushes to the drive mechanism.
.(4) Remove and clean the intake filter. One the base of the cleaner, behind the brushes, squeeze the two red abs together and pull the panel down to access the screen. Clean the hair/debris off the screen and reassemble.

Carbon motor brush source?
ANSWER : Unfortunatly the only way you could purchase the carbon brushes is from a vacuum parts dealer directly. the brushes will most likely end up costing you close toth price of a new motor anyway. sometimes its best to just get a new motor as the newer designes rotate teh brush much faster for better cleaning.

Kenmore 35923 beltless brush not working after rolling up shlace.
ANSWER : Its due to the grip of the brush and the motor not getting fit its became little bit like streched so this happens and in this case replacing the brushes and checking any other component broken near to it is necessary.

Carbon Brushes wearing out quickly on Kirby Heritage II
ANSWER : 4 possible reasons.
1 – one or both bearings are worn so armature (rotating part) wobbles as it is spinning and cause motor brushes to wear fast. Solution – change bearings too.
2 – Whoever replaced brushes – did not use some brush seating sticks to make cmutator smother and contour brushes to the shape of the comutator (not likely). Solution – appropriately install new set of brushes.
3 – Comutator is so warped that seating sticks do not help anymore – solution – new armature or turn the old armature.
4 – The fact that ONLY ONE brush was worn may mean that there is something wrong with the brush or housing. Maybe it could not move freely within the housing? I think this may be most likely cause it it may be a combination of all 4.Is it worth to fix? Hmm depends how much will it be. If this is 100+ – I’d say get newer Kirby for 300 ad enjoy the tech drive (Heritage does not have tech drive so it is much harder to vacuum with than the newer models)

Dyson DC04 is making a grinding sound & smells of burning. Hi. I have been told that the above is due to the carbon motor brushes burning out. The brush at the bottom still turns ok. I have bought 2 new carbon brushes & wondered how I would go about replacing them. Any help would be much apprecieated!
ANSWER : Hi there SmartAlec from NelsonVacuums.com.au here, this is not a repair for the faint hearted. First i am assuming you are not using a clutch model – with a selector for carpet/hard floor on the side. If you do have that model i can give you extra instruction. First you will ned a torx driver (like a phillips head but with a star) size 15. Remove the clear bin, the hose that runs up the back of the vacuum and the filter cover and filter. Also remove the inspection tube at back of machine and anything else that pops off easily.
.Next turn the dyson dc04 vacuum cleaner upside down and remove the base plate this is done with a large flatblade screwdriver.
.The next step is the brush – you should be able to access the drive shaft and pull the belt off which will free the roller.
.Unclip the small hose which goes from soleplate to the back of vacuum and remove the soleplate itself you will need to apply very firm pressure and only pull each side out a little way because if you go too far you will crack the guide.
.Next is to remove the housing that holds the whole brush assembly. You will see on either side of the vacuum 1 plastic washer (like a circle with a bit taken out) which has to be removed. Once both are off you can gently slip off the body over the shaft that the washers held the body on to. This removes the the body part that moves up and down to adjust your dyson to different height carpets.
.Now you should have basically a “nude’ dyson
.Next step is to remove the 8 torx screws that are spaced around the motor housing. The plastic outer will now come away revealing the last bit of motor casing.
.There is a cover plate that is held in by 4 lugs that can be gently pried back with a small screwdriver and the lid will come off like a tupperware container.
.From here your on the home straight.
.The motor now needs to be pushed out of its little case. The large rubber gasket will make this quite hard as it it designed to hold the motor in but with a fair bit of pressure it will slide out.
.With the motor out it should be easy access to the carbon brushes they will simply screw off allowing new ones to be screwed back on.
.Reversing the process is as simple (after youve done a few) as reversing the instructions and keep in your mind if you have to apply a lot of force it is likely that something is not lined up properly.

Now that I just fixed my Lux Legacy canister vacuum, I need help on my other Electrolux Regency Series upright! The vacuum works fine but the rotating brush does not work and the brush motor does not turn on. Tried cleaning the brush and hitting hte reset button to no avail. This upright has a triple setting switch and I checked the each of the wires seem to be attached. Tried rotating the brush by hand and it would not budge. ANSWER : There are a couple rectangular holes on the bottom of the power nozzle, beside the wheels. These have tabs in them that need released with a standard screwdriver.

.Once this is done, you’ll need to unscrew the screw at each end of the brush. Lift the brush out and thoroughly clean it, including the ends.

.Check the wiring to make sure they’re connected to the terminals of the motor. Also, check the belt for wear and tear. These belts can last for five years or more, but if it looks bad a good time to replace it is while you have the power head apart.
.When reassembling the vacuum, ensure the belt is fitted properly around the motor shaft and brush.
.Insert the front of the cover first, ensuring the edge fits neatly beneath the lip on the bumper all the way around. It takes a little manipulating to press the back into place. Make sure both tabs click into the locked position. Turn the vacuum over and reinstall screws. Try to rotate brush by hand a few times.
.At this point, plug the vacuum in and turn it on. If the power head doesn’t run, press the reset button. If the power head motor still doesn’t run, it could be due to loose or disconnected wires that lead to the reset switch, a bad reset switch, or even a bad motor. The vacuum needs to be taken to the nearest Aerus Electrolux store for further diagnosis and repair.

Carbon brush type

Electrolux vacuum brush not turning problem:

was vacuuming and rug got caught auto shut off kicked off power to brush. instead of hitting red button to restart brush I disconnected brush to vacuum some hair in Conner. after i reconnected the brush and hit the red button but no power to brush. Light won’t even switch on. Hope you can help

ANSWER : Under the vacuum, there is a guard..remove the guard , either by 2 screws or by 2 clips..there is a belt under the guard..that is connected to the brush..the belt need to be replaced.
