How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

Most grout brushes come with stiff bristles for extra scrubbing power.
Stiff bristles help to dislodge dirt that`s dried in or hard to shift. The angled bristles create a flicking motion, releasing dirt from carpet pile straight into the airflow. Small size, big difference.
The spinning brush opens the carpet fibers to allow cleaning at the base, as well as removing embedded hairs.
The roller brush is the combination of a belt, a roller, and sometimes a small vacuum head motor. The roller spins, and the bristles attached to it sweep up debris that then gets sucked into the dirt container of the vacuum. The brush head also helps to pull dirt and debris out of carpets of various pile heights.
A stiff bristle radius brush for heavy cleaning tasks. Use this brush for cleaning surfaces such as wood decking, brickwork and cement render.
Soft Versus Stiff

Put simply, stiff filaments provide crisp lines when cutting in or painting around windows, doors and trim. They also hold thicker coatings well. Soft filaments, on the other hand, leave fewer brush marks and ultra-smooth finishes when tackling doors, furniture or trim work.

A hard toothbrush, also called a firm-bristled brush, is increasingly difficult to find. In fact, not even tongue and soft-tissue cleaners are available with firm or hard bristles.
Soft brushes have bristles that are fairly flexible and set close together. They help to remove loose soil and litter on hard and smooth surfaces. Such brushes may be designed to dust carpets and furniture, specially those that are made of cane and wicker.
The TurboBrush® Tool has a rotating brush that easily connects to most vacuum hoses and is recommended for cleaning stairs, upholstery, rugs and other difficult to reach areas in your home while vacuuming. The TurboBrush® Tool stores on board most BISSELL vacuums for easy and convenient above floor cleaning.
Hog hair comes in different in qualities. Best hog has the stiffest hair, plenty of flags, allowing it to carry more colour, and is extremely resilient – so the brush keeps its working edge and shape for longer. Winsor & Newton Artists` Hog Brushes are made with the highest quality hog.
Some wavers use their hard brush as a shower brush as well so it can help in two areas that your other brushes can`t. Hard brushes also help stimulate the scalp to promote healthier hair growth. When you get a low fresh cut, this brush might have to sit on the shelf for a few weeks.
Hard toothbrushes are not recommended for everyday use on natural teeth because they can be too hard on gums and tooth enamel. Occasional use for stain removal will not cause harm. This type of toothbrush may be beneficial for cleaning dentures or partial teeth that are stained by foods and/or drinks.
Mop. Mop brushes are soft-bristled with a rounded head, most often associated with watercolour painting but useful for a variety of pigment types.
There are five main types of artist brushes: flat brushes, bright brushes, round brushes, Filbert brushes, and sable brushes. In flat brushes, the shape of the brush is relatively wide but not very thick.
Grab a new brush! The most popular types of paintbrushes are Round, Liner, Wash, Angular Wash, and Fan. Each type of brush has different sizes to help you cover larger areas or get those fine details depending on the size and subject of your painting.
A Filbert is a flat brush with the hair rounded into an oval at the tip. It is probably the most versatile of the brush shapes and a staple of oil and acrylic painting. A filbert brush with synthetic fibres.
A scrubber (German: Schrubber), is a type of wide brush with a long shaft used for cleaning hard floors or surfaces. Unlike a broom, which has soft bristles to sweep dirt away, a scrubber has hard bristles for brushing.
There are 3 types of floor scrubbers: Uprights, walk-behinds, and ride-ons.
A turbo brush contains a rotating brush to lift and beat your carpet or fabric as you vacuum. The rotating brush in a turbo brush is air-driven and relies on the suction power of the vacuum to keep rotating. The more powerful your vacuum the faster and more effective the turbo brush.
Turbo – Turbo brush with rotating brush – driven by the air-flow of the vacuum cleaner. Electric – Electronical brush, driven by the electrical power supply of the vacuum cleaner. Provide constant performance at any time, independence from vacuum cleaners air-flow.
Fill a sink with warm water and two to three drops of dishwashing soap. Swish the cobweb duster in the warm water to agitate and create suds. Continue to rotate the brush back and forth to clean between the bristles.
Beater Bars

Many vacuums feature a rotating brush, known as a beater bar, which is designed to agitate the carpet fibers to help loosen soil deep in the pile. This feature is helpful in many cut-pile carpets but can be damaging to certain styles.

To clean water-based paint out of a brush, use warm, soapy water. To clean oil- or latex-based paint out of a brush, use mineral spirits (also known as paint thinner). To clean shellac or varnish out of a brush, use denatured alcohol or household ammonia. Work the cleanser through the bristles using your fingers.
After a year or so, you may need to replace your vacuum`s beater brush. If the bristles seem to be squished, broken or are varying heights, it`s time to replace the brush. These can be found online with the vacuum`s brand and model of your vacuum cleaner.

My Roomba only works correctly when I leave out the rubbery type brush (not the fiber filled brush)…… when I leave the rubber one in, it doesn’t pick up & then finally stops & says REMOVED BRUSHES….. I have cleaned every nook & cranny of this thing… inside & out. I finally found that if this one brush is left off…. it works great & has for 2 weeks??? What could be the problem?
ANSWER : Hi,
.First let’s try one more time to clear out anything that might be caught inside. For this disassemble the green brush cage unit, partially, from the blue box. This would expose the cover of the gear box. On the left side, with the white nylon holes in which the square ends of the brushes plug. Remove the cover of the gear box with a tiny Philips screw driver might be there are 6 screws. Inside you would see two Golden Retrievers. Once, cleaned meticulously, the Roomba will be back. If this does not resolve the issue then probably needs this part

Now that I just fixed my Lux Legacy canister vacuum, I need help on my other Electrolux Regency Series upright! The vacuum works fine but the rotating brush does not work and the brush motor does not turn on. Tried cleaning the brush and hitting hte reset button to no avail. This upright has a triple setting switch and I checked the each of the wires seem to be attached. Tried rotating the brush by hand and it would not budge. Was going to “encourage” the brush to turn with a set of articula
ANSWER : There are a couple rectangular holes on the bottom of the power nozzle, beside the wheels. These have tabs in them that need released with a standard screwdriver.
.rogerpotts_10.jpg.Once they release, turn the vacuum over and lift cover of power nozzle at the back. This pulls the front of the cover out of the lip on the “bumper”.
.Once this is done, you’ll need to unscrew the screw at each end of the brush. Lift the brush out and thoroughly clean it, including the ends.
. rogerpotts_9.jpg.
.Check the wiring to make sure they’re connected to the terminals of the motor. Also, check the belt for wear and tear. These belts can last for five years or more, but if it looks bad a good time to replace it is while you have the power head apart.
.When reassembling the vacuum, ensure the belt is fitted properly around the motor shaft and brush.
.Insert the front of the cover first, ensuring the edge fits neatly beneath the lip on the bumper all the way around. It takes a little manipulating to press the back into place. Make sure both tabs click into the locked position. Turn the vacuum over and reinstall screws. Try to rotate brush by hand a few times.
.At this point, plug the vacuum in and turn it on. If the power head doesn’t run, press the reset button. If the power head motor still doesn’t run, it could be due to loose or disconnected wires that lead to the reset switch, a bad reset switch, or even a bad motor. The vacuum needs to be taken to the nearest Aerus Electrolux store for further diagnosis and repair.

No matter how many new belts we put in the brush will not rotate when it touches the floor. If you hold it straight up the brush rotates like crazy. Why is the brush not cleaning the floor. Yes, I have the right belt. It is R we have the boss. 12 amps. Model 4870
ANSWER : There is probably an accumulation of slippery stuff on the shaft that drives the belt. You can scrape it clean with a sharp knife or a razor blade. You might need to use some kind of solvent to get it clean, and if you do, be sure to follow up with something like Windex on a rag. You don’t want to leave anything oily on the shaft.
