How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?
Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :
If you`re smelling rubber, the belt has either burned out and snapped or the belt has become so stretched out that the roller is not moving and the vacuum belt is getting super heated from the motors RPM.
It could be that the motor is out of balance, (can be caused by build up of dust on the motor fans), Could be a mis-aligned or damaged seal, Could be motor bearings, or could be an air leak.
If there is a strong burning smell coming from the motor area of your Dyson DC14 or DC07 then it is most likely that your motor has burnt out.
Sometimes your vacuum pulsates on and off or keeps dying when using the extra powerful `Max Mode`, which can be related to the charge of your battery. Try turning this function off by pressing the Max button on your vacuum.
An electrical fire smell is often described as a “burning plastic” smell. This is because when wires overheat, the insulation surrounding them begins to break down and release chemicals into the air. These chemicals can have a strong, acrid smell that can be difficult to ignore.
Belt is Broken or has Debris The main reason why a vacuum may be emitting a smell of burning rubber is a broken belt or an object is suck. Excess hair or fur caught around the roller brush can also cause this issue. Turn off your vacuum and let it cool before doing anything.
The DC40 (ERP) was replaced in 2017 by the Dyson Light Ball.
Editor`s note: Dyson has discontinued this vacuum.
A Dyson vacuum cleaner has a lifespan of around 10 years. This is considerably longer than most other vacuums. So, if you`re looking for a high-quality vacuum cleaner that will last you for a long time, a Dyson could be a good choice. However, remember that Dyson vacuums are expensive.
Check the LED light to determine the battery level. A solid blue light indicates that the machine is in normal operating mode. A flashing blue light indicates that there is no power, and the battery needs to be charged for a minimum of 3.5 hours.
Blocked Filters or Overfilled Bag Vacuum motors need continuous airflow to remain cool. If the filters are blocked, or the bag/canister is overfilled, the motor may overheat. This can cause a burning smell or even smoke. Always empty your vacuum before it reaches maximum capacity.

ANSWER : If the filter bag is bad and didn’t trap all of the dust, then it got into your motor, so you may have a problem with your motor now.

Electrolux Hi-light Hi, my hoover is making a weird knocking noise and emitting a burning smell. Took the lid off and the belt *seems* okay, but still makes the noise and the smell….
ANSWER : Burnt smell is probably the belt slipping. Even though it looks OK, either the belt needs replacement and/or the roller needs cleaning and/or lubrication at the ends. Try cleaning the roller ends first and then light lubrication with WD40. If belt works, you are done. If not, replace belt.
I have an Electrolux Oxygen 3 vacuum I purchased rebuilt. After 1 month the power stopped working. I took it into Electrolux Authorized repair dealer, which was a horrible experience. When we received it back it was clearly not as powerful as before. Does anyone have any suggestions on what the problem may be? I would rather fix it myself than take it back to them. The next repair center is too far away. I am pretty good with fixing things, just needs some guidance. I think the repair center rep
ANSWER : Never have liked Electrolux doing any repair because it has been my experience that they don’t do what they say they did….if you can read between the lines…..give me a picture of the unit and more details and I’ll try and help you.

Electrical Burning Smell from Henry HVR200 Vacuum Cleaner
ANSWER : Hi! Highly unlikely that you need a new motor. Highly likely that you need new carbon brushes. The smell is caused by excessive sparking between the worn brushes and the copper commutator segments. Most carbon brushes (and from memory I suspect this includes Henry’s) have a copper wire buried in their last few millimeters, and you really need to change them before that becomes exposed. The longer you run it like this, the more likely you are to damage the commutator, so change them sooner rather than later. When you change the brushes, you can smooth off the commutator with very fine abrasive paper (the objective is to smooth it, not scratch it!), and then blow all the dust away (or **** it away if you have another vac, of course). .Incidentally, you don’t say if you are using a paper bag in your Henry. Some people, because the top-hat filter is so good, try to manage without a bag. This is false economy! You should always use a bag..I hope this helps! I value feedback, so please remember to rate this response.
Dirt Devil Jaguar Bagless Upright Burning Smell
ANSWER : Take the belt off again you will see burnt rubber from the old belt stuck to the motor shaft.you can take a fine piece of emery cloth and clean the shaft down to its polished finish.always good to do this after each belt.check the brush roller and see if there are any signsd of plastic melted.make sure it turns freely if not the brush roller might be siezing uo on youhave you cleaned the hepa filter?does it smell like wires burning or rubber.with it unlugged take it apart to the motor and take a fine iece of emery cloth and go over the motor armature .then try it again.you can take all the filters out and run it without the filters.that will help you narrow it down.please leave feedback
I have a Sears Upright vacuum cleaner, model 116.35922500. The vacuum wasn’t picking up. I discovered a clog in the nozzle hose. I attempted to remove the cover of the brush unit to clear the clog. I was unable to remove the cover completely, but was able to clear the clog. My problem now is that I cannot replace the cover correctly. Is there a way to remove this cover? Thanks, Elizabeth
ANSWER : When you tried to remove the cover did you have to put a little force on it to get to the clog
