How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

1. The dirt canister may need emptied or the bag/filter may need to be replaced – follow the instructions in your Owner`s Manual based on your power unit type. 2. The hose may be clogged.
Remove the brushroll and clean all hair, string, and lint from the brushroll bearings. If the vacuum cleaner brush still doesn`t spin after you clean the brushroll, consider replacing the brushroll.
Airflow Issues

If the device is clogged, or the dirt cup is full, this may cause the unit to overheat. Unplug the unit and allow it cool, empty the dirt cup and clean the filter.

Check for a plugged hose:

Plugged vacuum hoses are sometimes the reason for a loss in suction. Hoses can get clogged with hair, dust bunnies, string, or anything else that can`t pass through the other end of the hose. Airways inside the machine should be looked at as well. Wherever there is an air passage, check it.

It uses light sensing technology to measure the amount of dirt picked up and can thus be used to glean which parts of the house are dirtier than the others. The signals can also potentially be used to understand the size of the dirt picked up by the robotic vacuum cleaner.
If your vacuum cleaner has lost suction power, it`s time to empty the container. Vacuum cleaners come with various foam or mesh filters. These might get clogged over time if not cleaned or replaced properly. This will cause your vacuum to lose suction.
If your Dirt Devil Gator (Model Number: BD10100) isn`t starting or staying on for more than 15 seconds, you may need to replace the battery. Follow this guide to replace the battery to keep your Dirt Devil Gator in use! However before using this guide, you may not need to full replace the battery, just charge it!
Check that the vacuum cleaner is plugged into a working power outlet and that fuses and breakers don`t need resetting. An activated thermal cut-out due to a blockage is the next most likely cause of the problem. Check for blockages in the hose and filters, and remove any obstructions that you find.
The most common problems found in vacuum cleaners are low suction force, excessive noise, burning smell, vacuum not turn on, and overheating. These issues can be fixed by either cleaning the device or replacing some parts of the device. At times, it is best to seek a professional to fix the cleaner effectively.
Replace the Brush Belt

If the vacuum is still hard to push, tilt it back far enough that you can inspect the moving brush while the vacuum is running. Be careful to avoid getting too close to the moving parts. If you see that the brush is not turning, that means you will need to replace the brush belt.

Pirani vacuum pressure sensor

The MKS Pirani pressure vacuum sensor is a vacuum sensor based on the thermal conductivity that measures the pressure by defining the heat loss of the heated conduit. This pressure sensor is a very robust and reliable vacuum sensor for measuring the vacuum quickly and reliably.

Whenever a robot vacuum follows the route, they eventually will have to dock to recharge, but how do robot vacuums find their base? After cleaning or when the robot has run out of charge, infrared signals show where the base is. The robot vacuum navigates to the base. After recharging, it continues to clean the home.
Clog located in the vacuum hose

Turn the unit on and feel the suction at the end of the hose handle. If there is no or low suction, then the clog is in the hose. You can remove the clog by running a long, stiff object through the hose, such as a butter knife, starting at the wall end.

If all you hear from the vacuum unit is a click at the when you try to start the vacuum motor from inside the house, then the motor in the unit is dead and has to be replaced. A strong odor from the shellac, which coats the copper coil windings, is an indicator that the motor is about to or has burnt out.
The powerful airflow from the vacuum can help shake dirt and debris loose and pull them into the vacuum. Without the fan, a vacuum couldn`t work at all. But the roller brush is critical, too. It`s necessary in dislodging deep dirt and stuck debris, and it helps clear a path for air to carry dirt into the vacuum.
Clear the brush roll of any hair and debris and inspect by placing it on its end and spin. The brush should spin freely. If it doesn`t spin; it may be time to replace.
If the Side Brush is not spinning after cleaning, you may need a replacement Side Brush Module. Please visit the iRobot Store – Parts and Accessories, contact iRobot Customer Care, or use an authorized retailer or partner.
Vacuuming every day, or even a few times a day, is not going to create any long term problems. `But,` you might be thinking, `doesn`t the brushes spinning over the carpet on a beater bar wear it out? ` Sure, but a very small amount.
A vacuum cleaner can run continuously for 30 – 60 min each time. The vacuum cleaner has no suction power. For example, a hair cannot be sucked up.
Special designed handle fits perfectly in the palm of your hand. Easy-empty dirt cup. 4 hour charge time.
Extreme temperatures, frequent short trips, and general everyday use could shorten the life of your battery to two to three years. If your car battery dies quickly, even after a jumpstart, it might be time for a new one.
Average 12V car batteries typically last three to five years, and manufacturers recommend always replacing car batteries once those five years are up.
Some cars will get up to five or six years out of their battery, while others will need a new one after only two years. In general, your car will usually need a new battery after three to four years. Replacing your car battery is another part of routine maintenance.
They`re commonly used in golf carts, boats, and electric cars, but they can also be extremely useful for RVs and off-the-grid living situations. How long do deep cycle batteries last? The average lifespan of a deep cycle battery is about 3-6 years.

I have a dirt devil (ultra vision) it will not pick up anything i dont know what is wrong. It will not pick up dirt through the pipes no pressure in the pipes
ANSWER : Will try to help here.. first off.. regardless of the brand..upright vacs operate pretty much the same way.. I assume that when you plug it in and start it that the motor runs as well as the beater brush on the base.. from the sound of your symptoms and presuming everything runs.. you probably have a clogged line between the base and the motor.. If you unplug it first then flip it over so you can see the base bottom.look for recessed screws in the plastic bottom cover and back them out ( you will reuse them later so do not lose them) Once you get all the screws out..you should be able to remove the wheels and bottom cover.. You’ll probably see a fair amount of debris there so you may want to do all this over a barrel… Next, with the bottom cover removed… you should see a path or hose that will channel all the dirt etc up to the bag or bucket…That is probably blocked up and you may need another vac and/or metal coat hanger cut open and formed into a pick to pry some of that material out of the line.. If you have access to another vacuum ..try using that to free up any lodged material in the tubing.. Hope that helps…

Dirt Devil R088100. Cloth Was Sucked Into Hole Below Dirt Holder
ANSWER : Brad, Hopefully it is the belt that you smell burning. I would start by removing the underneath side of the vacuum head. Normally just a few screws that are meant to be remove for general maintanence and circumstances such as this. After removing the screws this should reveal the dirty side of life to you. You may need to remove the roller brush, and inspect the ends to make sure the brush rolls freely while holding the ends. If not the ends may need to be cleaned of hair and strings: ends should pop of and a shaft runs through the middle connecting them. Clean and replace. Move on up the path the dirt travels. The neck where the head and vacuum come together is the next jamming point, if this is where the cloth is lodged chances are the motor may have over heated due to clogging. Your vacuum may have a automatic shut off. You will need to contact Dirt Devil to see if there is a reset for the motor. There are propellers / fan blades at the end of the neck just before the motor housing. This is most likely where the clothe has logged itself causing the brushes on the electric motor to emit the burning smell, if you can remove all obstructions and the unit still does not turn on, check with dirt devil about the reset, Hope this helps.
