How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

If your Dyson vacuum is producing whistling noises, it may be the result of air leaking out of the vacuum`s vents. Check for broken seals and incorrectly-fitted parts. Broken seals may need to be replaced.
“Acoustics and sound engineering are an important part of technology development at Dyson,” said Richards. “Whilst some companies might set out to create a signature sound, the `boing` noise you might notice when you turn off some of Dyson`s newest machines, is actually a characteristic of our technology.”
The DC07, released in 2001 was the first implementation of Root Cyclone technology into a cleaner.
If the noise is intrusive, switching the machine off at the wall will stop the noise, or altering the position of the product in the room might make the noise less audible.
If the cleaner becomes noisy or starts vibrating, it may be because some debris has got tangled around the brush roll or agitator situated in the bottom of the cleaner.
Why is the vacuum is blowing dusty air out of the back? Simple: the bag or canister is full and the vacuum has nowhere to store the dust it is collecting. Empty the canister or bag. If that doesn`t fix it, the vacuum filter needs to be cleaned or changed.
Check the LED light to determine the battery level. A solid blue light indicates that the machine is in normal operating mode. A flashing blue light indicates that there is no power, and the battery needs to be charged for a minimum of 3.5 hours.
If your vacuum cleaner had a strong acrid burning smell before it lost power then the chances are the motor has failed which will require a motor replacement.
A Dyson vacuum cleaner has a lifespan of around 10 years. This is considerably longer than most other vacuums. So, if you`re looking for a high-quality vacuum cleaner that will last you for a long time, a Dyson could be a good choice. However, remember that Dyson vacuums are expensive.
Blockage – when a vacuum cleaner becomes unusually loud, it is normally because of a blockage of some sort. This is a problem that is easily solved by turning off the cleaner, check for blockages in the pipes, and remove them. You can also check and empty the canister to remove any possible blockages there as well.
The dust isn`t being stopped by the filter and is being exhausted out of the blower port and back into the air. This can be caused by a hole in the filter, the filter not being properly installed, or the dust being too fine for the filter.
Airflow. The airflow rating is the volume of air that moves through the vacuum and is measured in cubic feet per minute (CFM).
Vacuum airflow is by far the most important specification in terms of determining the cleaning ability of a vacuum cleaner. Measured in cubic feet per minute (CFM), it is the force of this airflow across a surface that picks up the dirt and moves it to the dust bag or container.
If your vacuum is still pulsing then you will want to test it with the filter removed. Remove the filter from the top of the machine and test your hoover, if it continues to turn on and off then the fault could be that the filter is filthy and requires cleaning.
One of the first things to do when your Dyson vacuum cleaner keeps starting and stopping is to empty the bin. It may be full, or the machine may simply perceive it as too full to continue working. Dyson vacuum cleaners require constant airflow through them to work, and a full bin can stop this from happening.
Over time, all batteries are subject to degradation. So if your run time has declined when the machine is not in Max / Boost mode, it might be time to buy a new battery. All our machines come with a 2-year initial warranty that includes the battery.
To reset the Brush bar press the Brush bar control button twice or switch the machine off and back on.

As with the Cordless Shark, the suction on this product is exceptional, effortlessly lifting dust and debris from carpets and hard floors alike. The suction power more than stands up to Dyson`s Ball Animal 3, especially when both are used in more agile ways.

I have a new Hoover BH50015 hand vac. The noise is terrible. It sounds like the bearing are bad. When you take off the cup and the filter and listen to the motor as it slows down after turning it off it definitely sounds like bad motor bearings. Hoover tells me the loud noise is normal. Can you help?
ANSWER : Yes the bearing is full of dust and dirt
.unscrew the housing and clean the bearing area and shaft
.then add a dap of Vaseline to the shaft and reassemble
.The shaft rides on a nylon bushing which acts like a bearing but has no ball bearings in it
.regreasing it is the only help you have for this one here

We have a dyson dc 07 animal the machine was working fine then switched off after returning to the machine minutes later it wouldnt switch on, i removed on off switch cover and used a short piece of wire across the brown wires flicked the wall switch and it worked, aha i thought faulty switch aquired a new one to no avail and now even the short piece of wire trick doesnt work, has the motor died do you think, it wasnt over heating or making strange noises prior to refusing to work
ANSWER : It could be the motor. I’m having to replace the brushes on my DC 05. It appears that you can only get brushes for the YDK motors in the DYSON, not the Panasonic motor. Which might be saying something about the YDK motors. What happens is that the carbon brushes wear down which is normal. However, the contact wire from the brush to its connector is set so that when the brush wears down, the wire is short enough to stop the spring etc from damaging the commutator. The end result is that you get an intermittent operation of the motor before it finally dies.
.I believe all the DYSONs come with the option of both motors and you cannot really tell which motor you have until you take the thing to bits. You also cannot change motors without changing various other parts on the hoover. On my DC 05 the writing on the YDK motor tells you which one it is.
.This website www. tasweb.org ,select the DC 05 option and scroll down tells you how to take the thing to bits. A search on google etc for your DC 07 may give similar results. Best of luck!

Dyson DC07 works and cleans fine, but motor makes loud screaching sound.
ANSWER : If the screeching noise is happening at all times, it is most likely a motor failure; which unfortunately can only be resolved by complete replacement of the motor.
.If it’s a loud ratchety-screeching type sound, and is only occurring when the brush is set to carpet, it is most likely due to an obstruction of the brushroll or a problem with the clutch. Ensure that the brushroll can spin free, look for anything physically blocking it. Check the bearing ends on the brushroll, they can melt and cause the brushroll to not spin effectively. If neither of those two things resolves the problem, the clutch most likely needs replacement.
