How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

It may be full, or the machine may simply perceive it as too full to continue working. Dyson vacuum cleaners require constant airflow through them to work, and a full bin can stop this from happening. Make sure there`s no dirt lodged in the top part of the bin.
To add any Dyson attachment to your hose, simply slide the opening over the end of the wand. Rotate the attachment as needed to adhere it to the end of the wand. You will not hear a click or anything since the attachment relies on the tension between the 2 openings to stay in place.
Check the LED light to determine the battery level. A solid blue light indicates that the machine is in normal operating mode. A flashing blue light indicates that there is no power, and the battery needs to be charged for a minimum of 3.5 hours.
It`s possible there`s a power consumption issue, with there just not being enough residual charge to run the machine. A new battery should fix this. My other thought is that it`s overheating. If too much power is pushed through the motor, which MAX power does, it could stop after a few seconds if it become hot.
To fix a clog in the hose, feed one end into a garbage bag, and poke the other end with the back of a mop pole, until you push the clog material out into the garbage bag. To fix a clog in the vacuum, whether it is a canister or bag, use your finger to feel for a clog. Pull as much of it out as you can and discard.
Dyson Cyclone V10 cord-free vacuums are engineered to make a pulsing sound to let you know if something is preventing airflow from passing through the machine. The LED blockage indicator will also continue to flash for up to 1 minute.
If there is a strong burning smell coming from the motor area of your Dyson DC14 or DC07 then it is most likely that your motor has burnt out.
To reset the Brush bar press the Brush bar control button twice or switch the machine off and back on.
Over time, all batteries are subject to degradation. So if your run time has declined when the machine is not in Max / Boost mode, it might be time to buy a new battery. All our machines come with a 2-year initial warranty that includes the battery.
The battery is designed to be left on charge permanently, and this will ensure that the vacuum is fully charged when it`s next used. Once the battery is fully charged, your machine won`t use any more electricity.
The model number is on the top left of the Bar code. Here is list of some very common positions or areas of the Dyson Vacuum where you will find the model and serial sticker.
All Dyson cordless vacuums (from the V6 to V11 variants) have a removable battery, and replacement options are in abundant supply because of their popularity.
Vacuum cleaners are fairly simple machines. They need power to be transmitted to the vacuum to create a suction force that lifts debris. So, the usual areas that cause suction loss include the wrong height setting, stuck rollers, a faulty gasket, a broken vacuum belt, a filled bag, or a clogged hose.
One of the easiest ways to increase vacuum cleaner suction is to empty the dust bag or container. Dust containers need to have enough space for airflow, otherwise, they could get clogged and have less suction power. Regularly check your dust compartment and empty or change it when it`s already 70-80% full.
Another reason the vacuum is not turning on may be that the circuit breaker may have tripped. Check the breaker on the unit and if it continues to fail it usually means the motor is going bad. Another reason can be the bad signal from the unit to the wall inlet.
A flashing light indicates that there is something wrong with your device and this may lead your vacuum to turn off. To fix this please refer to the “Machine Displays an LED Light” section with or call Dyson for additional help: 1 (844) 679-1647.
We recommend replacing your air purifier filter every 12 months. That`s because over time, filters can get clogged with pollutants, and even let unpleasant odors back into the room.
If the lights are flashing blue, that simply means the vacuum needs charging. Once the charger is plugged in, a solid blue light indicates that it is charging. Make sure you charge the vacuum for at least three and a half hours. If there`s no light showing, you will need to check your charger for damage.
We will take back an equivalent item to the one you purchase. For instance, when you buy a new vacuum cleaner, we can take back your old vacuum cleaner for responsible disposal. Similarly, when you purchase a new Dyson Supersonic or Dyson Purifier, we can take back your old machines if you wish.
`We do not recommend that owners expose their machines to water`. Dyson is urging customers not to clean their vacuum cleaners by leaving them in water, after a hack went viral online.
The cleaner head housing is not washable and should only be wiped over with a damp lint-free cloth. To maintain optimum performance, check and wash your brush bar regularly.
The use of an extension cable is not recommended.
Check the LED light to determine the battery level. A solid blue light indicates that the machine is in normal operating mode. A flashing blue light indicates that there is no power, and the battery needs to be charged for a minimum of 3.5 hours.
If you find that your machine is turning off intermittently, the filter in your vacuum is most likely full and covering the ventilation system. Remove the filter, then empty and wash it. Allow the filter to dry for at least 24 hours, or until it is completely dry.

My dyson DC17 will not turn on unless the handle is pulled back.(into the vacuuming position) The attachment hose will not work at all (0 suction thru it). I’ve checked the hose and made sure there is no obstruction. Any ideas?
ANSWER : Not sure if I can help, but I’ll try. The DC17 has two motors: the vacuum motor and a separate motor for the brush bar. It is normal that the brush motor works only when the handle is pulled back in the vacuuming position – that’s the way it’s made. So, when you say “my DC17 won’t turn on”, I’m not sure if you mean the vac motor, the brush motor, or both. If the vacuum motor won’t turn on, then you’ve got a problem I can’t help you with..
.As for no suction through the hose, I have to ask… are you sure your vacuum motor is working at all? Even with the hose stored away, the machine still relies on suction through that hose. If you’re sure the motor is working, then either you’ve got a blockage that you haven’t yet found (there’s at least one inspection port, a sort of U tube at bottom right of machine, that you need to check), or it could be that you’ve got a hole in the flexible hose (which opens only when the hose is extended)..
.Sorry if this is a bit garbled, but I’m puzzled by your problem. If you want to come back with more details I’ll try again for you!

Placing the handle of my Dyson DC07 into its upright and locked position causes the beater bar to stop turning. It will not start turning until the handle is first lowered to the working position and the Carpet/Bare knob is moved to the Bare Floor position and then back to the Carpet position. Then the beater bar turns until the handle is placed into the upright position. What might be the problem?
ANSWER : Hi its Darran at Dyson.

The brush control is designed to switch the brush bar off automatically when you stand the machine back into the upright position. It is designed this way to protect any delicate floor surfaces when you have the machine switched on and upright and when you are using the hose.

If the brush control should be in the centre position and move forward to the “on” position when you release the head. If it is not doing this, please contact our Helpline on 0800 298 0298 (UK) or 1866MYDYSON (US).

Kind regards

No Suction I get great suction in the hose, but when I plug the hose back into the unit, there is no suction and the air flow indicator line goes completely red. I've changed the bag and filters. I took the small panel off the back and made sure there is no clog, and took the hose off to make sure there was no clog there. Still no suction. Please help.
ANSWER : I about to say that’s always a clog of some sort that causes that

I have a Kirby G4 Vacuum Cleaner – MOdel G4 D. I have never had any problems or repairs done to it in the past ten plus years that I’ve had it. This is an upright vacuum. I was vacuuming the carpet floor and was not having any trouble at all. I switched the vacuum off and moved it into a different room. When I tried to turn on the vacuum, it would not turn on. I checked with different outlets, used both front attachment and hose attachment. Checked the front part of the motor/ spiral case. This

Infinity Vaccum by Shark, model number NV31COS, will not start. The vacuum was running just fine until it grabbed the edge of a curtain. Turned it off to release the suction. Turned it back on and was working fine. About a minute later the vacuum was making an odd noise. Every 2 seconds or so it would “heave” (lack of a better word) then go away, then come back and so on. Turned the vacuum off and checked for blockage, none that could be seen or felt, and now the vacuum won’t turn. Any suggestio
ANSWER : Carpet brush won’t turn when vac on

No suction Just received my refurb. dyson animal bagless. Finally figured out how to get it all together, turned it on and there is no suction coming up thru the beater bar. The hair is just collecting around the bar and not going up into the canister. It appears all the suction is going thru the open red end of the attachment hose, which has a vented cover piece. Am I missing a piece or is there a switch to turn of the attachment suction?
ANSWER : So the red hose isn’t connected to a part on the vaccum so like it is connected to the connester but not to an opening just above the beater bar, this is the only idea i can supply you with. good luck, maybe i got lucky and helped you out.

I purchased a Eureka C4910 last year and have a question that I am hoping you can answer.

There are two motor actions with this vacuum, 1) the vacuum suction, and 2) the beater bar. The action of the beater bar is that motor is supposed to automatically shut off when the handle is in the complete vertical position assuming the vacuum is stationary, but then turn on when the handle is tilted toward the floor, assuming the vacuum is moving back and forth.

The beater bar motor turn-on mechan

ANSWER : Good day!

Normally when the motor is easily moved back and forth means that it have a proper lubrication, proper alignment and no clogs.

When the motor and the belt is OK the problem could be on electrical wiring and switch.

If found electrical switch burned out you need to replaced it because when the switch is burn the contact of that switch is open even you turn it ON.that’s why the motor is not function because the voltage is not pass through the circuit because of open switch. You need to replaced it.
And check some fuses if any and other burned electrical wire.Replaced it also.
