How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

Most cases of a jammed or stuck brush bar are quick and easy to fix, simply pulling the debris gently from the brush bar. Alternatively, if you need to clear a problematic blockage, you can take the brush bar out of the housing easily, for quick maintenance.
To reset the Brush bar press the Brush bar control button twice or switch the machine off and back on. Please note: In normal use, the Brush bar automatically turns off when the machine is upright and automatically turns on when the machine is in the vacuuming position.
Another issue that can arise, is that the machine will feel hard to push. Thus is due to the machine`s suction forming an air tight seal between the cleaner head and the floor. It`s usually more common on thicker, more plush carpeting, carpets with thicker padding underneath or even area rugs.
Check the Rotator Brush and Wheels

Sometimes pieces of string or other objects get wrapped around your vacuum`s rotating brush or around the wheels of the vacuum. Unplug your vacuum. Turn it over and have a look at the wheels and brush. If you see any pieces of string or objects lodged there, remove them.

First check the airflow valve located under the handle. Sliding this open may make it easier to push your vacuum. It could also be that your suction is set too high. To fix, use the suction controls on the canister to adjust the suction settings.
One of the first things to do when your Dyson vacuum cleaner keeps starting and stopping is to empty the bin. It may be full, or the machine may simply perceive it as too full to continue working. Dyson vacuum cleaners require constant airflow through them to work, and a full bin can stop this from happening.
A Dyson vacuum cleaner has a lifespan of around 10 years. This is considerably longer than most other vacuums. So, if you`re looking for a high-quality vacuum cleaner that will last you for a long time, a Dyson could be a good choice. However, remember that Dyson vacuums are expensive.
Press the brush control button located next to the ON/OFF switch to turn the brushbar off for vacumming delicate rugs, looped carpets and hard floors. Press the button again to restart the brushbar for vacuuming carpets.
If your brush is scratching your floor, or not cleaning as well as it used to, then you may want to replace your brush bar.
The explanation is that pushing it drives the back of it down into the carpet, whereas pulling it actually lifts the back of the head a little, thereby providing a vent to relieve the suction, which is the cause of the problem.
Clog located in the vacuum hose

Turn the unit on and feel the suction at the end of the hose handle. If there is no or low suction, then the clog is in the hose. You can remove the clog by running a long, stiff object through the hose, such as a butter knife, starting at the wall end.

Low compression, an intake leak or tight valves also can cause low vacuum at idle. If the vacuum reading fluctuates within the normal range-the gauge needle bounces around a lot-uneven compression (broken rings or leaking valves or head gasket in one or two cylinders) is a likely culprit.
Push harder than you pull.

Many people naturally exert more force when they`re pulling their vacuums back than when they`re pushing them forward, but this can leave dirt on the floor. Vacuums are designed to be pushed forward at a rate of about 12 inches per second and pulled back at a rate of 6 inches per second.

The brush roll or its bearings may be clogged with hair, threads or dirt. Make sure they are clean and the roll spins. The belt may also have slipped because it was loose. Check the fit of the new belt when it is installed.
Brush Head Bearings Are Clogged or Have Failed

These are symptoms of bad or dirty bearings. You should remove the brush roll or rolls from the vacuum. Check to see that the bearings at the end of the brush roll allow it to spin freely. Make sure that there is no hair trapped in the bearings.

Clean Your Dyson Vacuum:

Thoroughly clean the dust bucket and flapper by shaking or tapping it to release any dirt that has become clogged if your Dyson is pulsing, stopping, or making noise. Rinse your filter monthly, even if it looks clean on the outside.

Check the LED light to determine the battery level. A solid blue light indicates that the machine is in normal operating mode. A flashing blue light indicates that there is no power, and the battery needs to be charged for a minimum of 3.5 hours.
Give it a break

By letting the battery run down to empty at least once a month, you`ll help to prolong its life.

If you are using your vacuum on a daily basis you will need to replace the brush roll much more frequently. You can take a look at your brush roll and see how the bristles look. If they look worn out and the bristles look loose it`s time to change your brush roller.
Can I exchange one Dyson machine for another? For purchases made on Dyson.com, Dyson does not offer exchanges unless the machine was damaged in transit. Machines are covered under warranty service with repair and servicing support.
Most problems arise because of a blockage – if not a dirty filter or cyclone unit, then something could be caught in the wand or the brush bar. Once again, the lack of suction could be caused by a dirty filter or a blockage somewhere in the vacuum`s system.
this is not an official Dyson part you simply Slide the trigger lock onto your Dyson after which you can click it on so it stays. on. so a trigger button is there for a reason it ensures that you lose longer with your battery. and it`s safer.
The Dyson Airwrap™ styler harnesses an aerodynamic phenomenon called the Coanda effect, propelled by the Dyson digital motor V9. It attracts hair to the surface of the brush, propelling air along the hair strands. Styling with air, not extreme heat.
It turns the main brush on and off.

My Dyson DC 14 is making the horrible “ratcheting”sound only when the brush is engaged on the carpet setting. I have cleaned the brush, so there are no obstructions, the canister is empty and properly on the unit. I checked to make sure all of the “traps” and hoses are clear of obstructions, the belt is on the brush securely and moves freely, the brush itself spins freely, but there is still the “ratcheting” noise. Any other suggestions?
ANSWER : Our DC33 was making the same ratcheting sound immediately upon placing the cleaner/brush head on the carpet. We carefully pulled the beater/brush bar out of the vacuum. Once removed, we pulled the black plastic end off of the center rod. We discovered hair wrapped around each end of the center rod. After the hair was removed and the clean/brush bar was re-installed, the vacuum ran flawlessly. Hope it works as well for you as it did for us.

Just purchased this Dyson dc24 today. brush doesn’t spin after gettin tangled in a cord. removed the cord from the brush OK.
I have several times:
removed the brush and replaced it OK.
pushed the red button by the brush.
pressed the brush power switch.
ANSWER : When you removed the brush roller dod you examine the end of the actual roller that is opposite from the removal opening. There is a gear that the roller fits over that may have gotten stripped when it became tangled. Check that the gear has not rounded off and look inside the roller bar to see if the area where the gear fits into may have gotten stripped as well. You might try to operate the vacuum without the roller brush installed for a few seconds just to see if the gear turns. When I say gear, it is actually a somall “post” about 1-2″ long that the roller brush fits over. Hope this helps!

I have a Bissell Pro Heat 2X carpet cleaner and the brushes spin, then stop. I turn it off and when I re-start, the brushes do not spin until I push foreward. The it spins and stops again. Both belts are tight. The brushes spin if held above the carpet, but upon contact with carpet it stops. Same thing on a hard surface.
ANSWER : The reason for the brushes to stop when it is above any surface is there is a switch in the handle that stops the brushes so it dont burn your motor up it may have a faulty switch.

Brush won’t rotate when pushed forward
ANSWER : I had the same problem . The reason it acts like that is due to the cable that runs from the vacuum motor to the brush assembly has an intermittent open. My fix was to find the small cable that was causing my troubles and splice it. Making sure that I recovered the insulation. Of course my local repair station wanted to replace it for $75 labor plus parts and keep it for 3 days. I took it home and did it in 30 minutes .
