How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

If the vacuum cleaner stops suddenly, the filters should be checked to make sure that they are not blocked or that they require changing. This applies to both bagged and bagless models. Also check if the nozzle or hose are blocked.
If your vacuum cleaner keeps turning off, this could be due to the following reasons: Blockages – check the hose and head for any obstructions. Filter – always check your filters, if these are clogged this could be causing the vacuum cleaner to work harder and lose suction power.
Electrolux Stick Vacuums

The filter assembly is not washable and should be placed every six months. As with the canisters and uprights, an excessively dirty filter leads to motor noise, loss of suction, and overheating.

Check For Clogs or Blocks In The Vacuum

Check the hoses, the filters, and throughout the vacuum, and clean out any blockages or clogs. Vacuums will likely also have a recommended cooldown time to ensure that the vacuum won`t overheat. You will need to wait for that time before you turn the vacuum back on.

Overheating usually occurs because the dust bag has not been emptied, filter has not been cleaned or there is a blockage in the floor tool, wand or bent hand piece. If your vacuum shuts down unexpectedly, make sure you turn the vacuum off and unplug it from the wall socket.
The most common problems found in vacuum cleaners are low suction force, excessive noise, burning smell, vacuum not turn on, and overheating. These issues can be fixed by either cleaning the device or replacing some parts of the device. At times, it is best to seek a professional to fix the cleaner effectively.
If you find that your machine is turning off intermittently, the filter in your vacuum is most likely full and covering the ventilation system. Remove the filter, then empty and wash it. Allow the filter to dry for at least 24 hours, or until it is completely dry.
The motor filter is located behind the Electrolux S bag inside the vacuum. To open, push upward on the “S BAG” tab to reveal the interior housing.
Remove the filter and empty out any loose contents/rubbish. Rinse under warmer water for 1 minute (max 400C). Leave out to dry, making sure it is completely dry before refitting to your vacuum.
As I see it the question is basically academic, since a vacuum is an empty space it cannot conduct or convect heat, radiated heat will pass through but won`t affect it since there`s nothing in the vacuum to take up the energy.
Clog located in the vacuum hose

Turn the unit on and feel the suction at the end of the hose handle. If there is no or low suction, then the clog is in the hose. You can remove the clog by running a long, stiff object through the hose, such as a butter knife, starting at the wall end.

A vacuum cleaner can run continuously for 30 – 60 min each time. The vacuum cleaner has no suction power. For example, a hair cannot be sucked up.
An overheating computer can intermittently restart, shutdown, or experience performance issues. Eventually excessive heat can damage the internal components. When the computer overheats, you may experience symptoms such as: Fans inside the computer become louder as they start spinning faster to remove excess heat.
Vacuuming every day, or even a few times a day, is not going to create any long term problems.
A strong odor from the shellac that coats the copper coil windings is an indicator that the motor is about to or has burnt out. If the motor is still running, even if it turns on and off by itself as it is heating and cooling, you can still run the motor until it gives up for good.
If there is something that has become caught in the hose in another part of the system, the airflow will be reduced and can cause overheating and a shut down. Clear out hoses, attachments, and brushes of any hair, dirt, and debris. This will allow for restored airflow and should get things going again.
It`s possible there`s a power consumption issue, with there just not being enough residual charge to run the machine. A new battery should fix this. My other thought is that it`s overheating. If too much power is pushed through the motor, which MAX power does, it could stop after a few seconds if it become hot.
Electrolux and Frigidaire – push the reset button on the water dispenser and hold until you see the green light flash (this can take up to 15 seconds). GE and Hotpoint – press the Reset Water Filter button on the dispenser and hold for 3 seconds.
Rather than waiting for the canister to fill up all the way, the Vacuum Experts suggest you empty it after every use. If that`s not feasible, “empty the vacuum once it reaches half to two-thirds of the way full as a matter of habit,” the Vacuum Experts blog post recommends.
The better the filtration, the fewer allergens escape back into your home. Bagged vacuums often have HEPA-rated bags, replaceable exhaust filters or both. Bagless canisters usually have permanent, washable filters, some with HEPA ratings.
HEPA filters are not designed to be washed and reused. Doing so will cause damage to the fibers which makes the filter ineffective and it will become void of its job. Once a filter has reached the maximum capacity of harmful particles, it will need to be replaced with a fresh, new one.
You cannot clean a HEPA filter by using something like a vacuum because the particles are trapped not only on the surface of the filter but also deep inside the media,” Bloemer says. Don`t even think about running it under your sink, either—liquids like water and soap will destroy the filter media, he adds.
Problems can occur when overused or clogged filters cause the vacuum motor to overheat. This not only shortens the motor life but causes a loss of suction. In some cases, total motor burn out can occur.

I have a Liftmaster garage door opener and the garage door faces south. Normally the opener works great except at certain times on a sunny day.The sunlight is not directly hitting one of the sensors but the door will comedown as far as half way and then it will go back up and the lights will flash. If I go inside and use the button I can hold it down until the door is fully closed. However, sure is a pain to have to take the car out, go back into the garage, shut the door and then leave the h
ANSWER : Sounds like a problem with a limit switch or something getting in the way of the electric eye that interrupts for safety reasons. .Clean the electric eye transmitter and sensor of debris and cobwebs and make sure the wires are attached properly..Check the operation of the lifting media track or chain. Has it been lubricated recently?.If possible, clean the switch in the transmitter in the car, it may be shorting out.

My garage door opener will start to close then stop and go back to the open position. If I put pressure on the door as it is closing sometimes it will close all the way and sometimes it will return to the open position. Can you help me. Thanks
ANSWER : Sounds like the pressure sensor is being tripped – this is a safety feature on most makes in the last 10 years.

Find the make/model of your device and it probably has some knobs on the main unit to adjust.

For example, on the Chamberlain Power Drive 3/4 HP Chain Drive Garage Access System model PD752D:

I had the vacuum cleaner question about the canister and the wand/powerhead… the Kenmore Progressive Vacuum canister model 116.25812 and the canister not powering off without unplugging the vacuum. The solution I received that they both run on their own switch so it is normal makes sense. However, is there a power switch on the canister anywhere? The only way for the canister to be turned off is by unplugging it. Any ideas? One would think there would be a switch. I am new to fixya and hope
ANSWER : Hi. On some models, one switch controls all of the power. Your issue, which is no working switch is almost certainly a blown triac on the circuit board in the canister – kenmore part number KC86WBZRZ000

Looks like a common fault with this particular model judging by the number of complaints on the web.

.Take it to your local vacuum repair shop and they should be able to fix it for a nominal fee.

Have a Centralux Aerus about 5 years old. Don’t see a model number. There is suction but beater brush quit working. Was using for a few minutes, shut it off for a few minutes, turned it back on and suction only. Tried the reset button also. Tried the sidekick attachment and it works fine. There was no smell like something was hot. Belt is fine. Are there any fuses or anything else to try? This vacuum cleaner has not really been used that much, it is hard to believe the motor would need replaced
ANSWER : There probably is a loose wire in the handle near the switch or a wire off near the swivel elbow near the vac power head. With the right fastener tool to remove some screws you can fix it yourself

After a brief power outage my Marantec 4700 garage door opener has problems opening/closing. When opening it stops at the fully open position and the lights blink, when closing it automatically reverses just as it fully closes and then the lights start to blink again. I checked for obstructions and tried to reset the limits of travel per the manual, it still does the same thing. Any ideas on what to try next?
ANSWER : This is not a sensor issue, I have a similar problem, sensors work fine, garage door is still fully functional, all operations, including safety sensors work properly, just the overhead lights flash. I suspect there was damage to the power board due to a power surge, going to order a replacement to see if it works, will let you know how it goes.

I have a Eureka Boss Model 411… I need to know where the reset button is for the suction motor. The canister was clogged on the backside, I didn’t see it and the suction motor shut off. I have cleared the obstruction, but don’t know where the reset is for that motor. I know how to reset the brush head motor.
ANSWER : If your vacuum motor overheats, it will stop working. it will start working again once it cools.

My electrolux oxygen canister cuts on and off. I have to open and close the vacuum, or take the base of the hose off and then re-insert. I have to do all these things before it will start up again. I sometimes shake the hose around, then it will come back on. If I try to dust with the dust brush (like a lamp shade or shelf) and the suction pulls against the object, the vacuum goes off for awhile. Sometimes I’ll have to reset the vacuum by unplugging the electric cord. I never get to finis
ANSWER : Maybe you should have taken it back to that shop, it appartently isn’t fixed. I would have replace that board, don’t believe in modifing, you usually end up with other problems, like you have. One thing to check is maybe you have a partial clog in the hose or wands. A clog would cause this shutting off, then restarting after it has cooled down. If this has a hepa filter, and it has a reset for that filter, press it to see if that is the problem. But I know that board would cost you approx. $90 to $100 just for the part.

I hit the button and just the light comes on,then i hit the button again and the door closes almost all the way but opens and light keeps flashing . the sensors are on and clear of obstructions . it is a wayne dalton quantum 3212 garage door opener.
ANSWER : Hello ccap….. It sounds like one of those sensors has gotten out of alignment with the other. check to see if there is a steady green light on each sensor. If not, adjust until the light is a steady green. Joe
