How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

When a grinder is jammed, generally the motor won`t be able to spin the burrs to grind the beans. It often results in a “humming” sound. This can happen for a couple of reasons: Coffee oils and debris can easily build up in the burrs if they have been left to collect over time.
The most likely reason your grinder isn`t grinding is that it`s clogged up or jammed. First, check that the hopper`s chute isn`t blocked — sometimes, a stuck coffee bean or two can get wedged there and prevent the rest of the beans from flowing from the hopper into the grinding chamber.
Check to see if the Burr Grinder is plugged into a grounded 3 prong outlet. If it is, unplug the Burr Grinder, then plug it into the same outlet again. If it still does not work, check the fuse or circuit breaker on the electrical circuit the Burr Grinder is connected to and make sure the circuit is closed.
1) The coffee quantity dial may be in the pre ground use coffee setting which will bypass the grinder. This setting is used for tamping only. 2) Please check the My Coffee icon to see if it is flashing. If this is flashing it means the My Coffee program is in programming mode.
In theory, manual coffee grinders should produce slightly better tasting coffee than automatic grinders, because manual grinders don`t heat up coffee beans during grinding. Most automatic grinders grind at high speeds, and the friction slightly increases the coffee`s temperature for a short time.
You`ll want to grind the beans for about 30 seconds for drip coffee. For espresso, you`ll want to grind the beans only for 10-15 seconds.
Worn flanges will have a problem gripping the grinding disc, preventing it from spinning or slipping. As flanges wear, replace them as maintenance. Remove the lock nut, the outer flange, grinding disc and inner flange. Reinstall with a new inner flange, grinding disc and inner flange.
When an herb grinder is dirty, it will become difficult to turn large pieces of the herb into a small, fine grind. For the grinder to grind the marijuana down into the perfect consistency to smoke, it must be clean.
What Can Go Wrong with a Coffee Grinder? Coffee grinders are relatively simple. The most common problem is that they get clogged up with grounds which slows down the motor. In addition, the electrical cord can short out, the thermal limiter can burn out, or the motor shaft can stop rotating.
Generally, coffee grinders should be cleaned every two weeks. However, this can vary depending on the type of beans and how frequently you use your coffee grinder.
Most grinders designed for home use come with a brush or even grinder cleaner to use on your machine periodically, but you can grab any brush (as long as it won`t scratch the burrs, but they can withstand a small wire brush, which is what comes with most machines).
Make a baking soda mixture

Simply add a quarter cup of baking soda to the reservoir and fill up your coffee maker with hot water. Turn the machine on and run 2 full cycles. Once that is done, you can dump the pot and wash it with warm water. At this point, you should have a clean, deposit-free pot.

Pre-ground coffee tends to be cheaper than whole bean coffee for three reasons. First, if you choose the whole bean route, you`ll need to also purchase a grinder, which can cost anywhere from $10 to $1000 as an upfront cost. Check out some of the best burr grinders for 2019 here.
Overgrinding coffee beans leads to a bitter flavor

Under-extracted coffee from beans ground too coarse will lead to a taste that is salty, acidic, and tart. Over-extracted coffee beans that are ground too fine will result in a cup that is tasteless and acrid.

You don`t need to grind your coffee beans every time to enjoy a distinct, rich, and fresh coffee flavor. The trick when you buy pre-ground coffee is to follow best practices and store it to keep the oils and aromatics firmly sealed inside the container. Ground coffee is freshest two to three weeks after you open it.
The more finely ground the beans, the more caffeine is released into the water. So it`s safe to say that when it comes to caffeination, a finer grind does result in stronger coffee, while a coarser grind will always brew a weaker cup.
Each blade grinder is different, so adjust accordingly. Coarse Grind for French Press for 5-10 seconds. Medium Grind for electric drip or most Pour-Over methods is 10-15 seconds. Fine Grind for espresso machines grinds approximately 30 seconds.
While a good quality coffee grinder can generally last between 7 and 10 years, some factors can reduce its life expectancy. These factors may include frequent and heavy use, lack of proper maintenance and cleaning, or the unavailability of replacement parts.
We recommend changing your filter coffee grinder`s burrs every six months, regardless of volume.
If the grinder pump system fails, an alarm on the control box sounds an audible alarm as well as a red light that will illuminate. During an alarm condition, water use should be limited until repairs have been made. Schedule the repair immediately to avoid a sewer spill.
Ensure that you`re using the latest version of the Grindr app (Android/iOS). Force close Grindr. If you`re an Android user, clear your Grindr cache. Restart your device.
Adjusting the Grind

Only move the dial in very small increments of about three millimetres. If you`ve been monitoring your grind setting regularly, you`ll only ever need small adjustments. A three millimetre movement should change your shot time by three to five seconds, using the same dose and tamp technique.

I have a kitchenaid artisan coffee machine which is 15 months old just out of warranty. when you start to make an esspresso coffee the machine runs but no water is being pumped through the coffee to the cup you can hear the machine working but no coffee.
Thanks Lloyd
ANSWER : Hello lloyd….. There are a few possible causes of this problem. The first is using coffee which is too fine a grind. The second is a machine which needs to be thoroughly cleaned. Most can fix those two areas themselves. The other causes have to do with the amount of pressure the machine is producing. If, for instance the boiler safety valve opens too soon, the pump will not get to the necessary pressure of 7 to 9 bars.
.
.That said, begin by cleaning it thoroughly as per the manual. IF you do not have a manual, here is the link to all kitchenaid manuals http://shared.whirlpoolcorp.com/product_literature/search_results.jsp?searchTerm=5KES100&siteCd=KAD&userType=Servicer

Roomba keeps saying clean brushes yet are clean!
ANSWER : Make sure you take off the little cap at the end (the one that spins — just grab it and pull it straight off) and clean under it too. The rest of the brush may look perfectly clean but what happens is that hair gets stuck under spinning cap and, like a slowly growing washer, it pushes the whole brush toward the gear box. When it gets pushed over enough, the large yellow ring starts to rub against the side of the brush deck making it harder for the motor to turn the brush and you get that “remove and clean brushes” message.

No Water My Bissell rug shampooer does not eject water or saop whan I pull the saop trigger on the handle. I checked both filters and they are clean. Then, I removed the container that sucks up the water and pulled the saop trigger, water barely came out of the tubes. I tried to clean the rug in our family room and the rug was not wet when I finished, no water coming out to clean the rug. HELP HELP HELP!!! I live in Colorado is there a Bissell repair shop near Denver, HELP!!! Thanks Dominick ema
ANSWER : Does water squirt out of the hose nozzle, if it does, then check the heater inside the handle asm. Make sure that where the tubes hook up to it are not clogged. If water doesn’t squirt, check for the seal at the bottom of the tank, it needs to be on the tank, not in the hole, this is for the soap bottle also, there is a seal on the bottom of it as well. The flow indictor cap is leaking air or maybe is too tight. If you had the top cover off, make sure that the tubes are routed right so as not to get pinched when the cover is put back on, the smart mix knob should be in the water setting and that the piston is on the bottom of the smart mix knob. Pump is bad. Try running a mix of vinegar and water to see if that unclogs the lines. Is the top cover and the base tight together in the back, sometimes the top breaks loose and it will raise up and it can’t spray, just re-fasten it down.

I have cleaned & cleaned this thing! It runs for about 2 mins & stops, says “Clean Brushes”! and now it’s very noticeable it’s not picking up well… but is picking up a bit. I take the dust bin out, and the brushes spin…. and it has much more power…. and is very clear it is working! But it’s useless without the dust bin! LOL

It’s only 9 months old…. called customer service, but it was the one time it worked just fine! Of course, I thought I’d stop here first before calling again! Than

ANSWER : Ok, this is a “Brush Height Adjustment” issue. It will probably work great on a hard surface but on carpet the brushes bog. If you’ve taken the unit apart already…Sorry….do it again. When you do, you’ll see a String which allows the brushes to “Float” on different surface heights. Loosen the screw a little and pull a bit more string through. Re Tighten the screw and put it together enough for a test run. Now reset the roomba. To reset the Roomba, power the Roomba on, and press the Spot, and Dock.buttons together for at least 8 seconds. Until it plays a tune. The.clock, and any schedule is erased at this time. Try running the Roomba.with the dust bin removed to see the brushes spin easier..
.
Second method, is taking off the bottom cover, and removing the.battery. While it’s removed, and not plugged into the charger, press.the clean button for at least 20 seconds. This will erase the memory..Replace battery, and cover. Run the Roomba to see if the brushes start.to spin. You can also remove the brush housing by removing the 4 screws.and reseating it, to see if it was a bad connection, since you have the.bottom cover off.

Altrev,

I have an ODC325 Black&Decker spacemaker coffeemaker on my boat and it stopped working this weekend although the hot plate still gets hot. I suspect it is the thermal switch as you described (I hear a click when I switch the machine on but nothing happens and the heating element does not kick in). I would be very happy to receive one or two of these 14 spare switches you mention so I can repair the unit. If still available I would appreciate hearing from you how we can do the transact

ANSWER : We don’t sell parts individually on the site here…. was it some other solution for another person you saw about the switch? I don’t believe there really is a part called a thermal switch… there is a thermal fuse but if the hotplate gets hot I would think the thermal fuse is fine..
.Please give me more info here and I can help.
.Thanks.Tim

I have a dyson alergy machine, I have emptied it, but I would like to clean the filter. I can’t locate where the filter is or how to get to it to clean it. The manuel for this is not with the machine. This machine came with the house we live in. Could you help me please?

Laurie

ANSWER : Greetings Irlawren3,
.
.It all depends on the model you currently have. The filters on some are above the motor and some are on the side housing. Its pretty clear looking at the unit where the filters are located. I would suggest investigating your unit and looking for the filter.
.
.When you do locate the filter, it is to be washed with plain water and allowed to dry for at least 12 hours before being put back into the unit.
.
One thing that helps determine the model is the color also. What color is it?
.
.Thanks!
