How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

Loose connections will cause your vacuum cleaner to lose suction. Make sure that the dust container, the hose, the tube and the brush are all attached properly. If the problem continues, your vacuum cleaner might have a technical problem. If you suspect this to be the case, contact an authorised service agent.
Actor Lloyd Bridges was the company`s spokesperson. In 2000, the North American rights to the Electrolux brand name were sold to Electrolux Group of Sweden, which since 1968 had been unaffiliated. The corporation that originally manufactured Electrolux vacuums has been known as Aerus since 2001.
One of the easiest ways to increase vacuum cleaner suction is to empty the dust bag or container. Dust containers need to have enough space for airflow, otherwise, they could get clogged and have less suction power. Regularly check your dust compartment and empty or change it when it`s already 70-80% full.
Over time and extended use, a very fine layer of particles will start to line the inside of a vacuum bag, remaining in place even after the bag is emptied. This means that the bag will lose the proper airflow required to let the incoming air escape. As the airflow is restricted, the suction dies down too.
Low compression, an intake leak or tight valves also can cause low vacuum at idle. If the vacuum reading fluctuates within the normal range-the gauge needle bounces around a lot-uneven compression (broken rings or leaking valves or head gasket in one or two cylinders) is a likely culprit.
In general, you can expect brands such as Electrolux (i.e., those in the price range of an Electrolux) to last from five to eight years. Electrolux washers and dryers come with nationwide service coverage and a longer-than-average three-year warranty.
Electrolux has now decided to exit Russia and divest the business to local management through a sale of its Russian subsidiary. A capital loss of approximately SEK 350m will be recorded as a non-recurring item affecting the operating income for Business Area Europe in the third quarter 2022.
The two main indicators to determine vacuum power performance are water lift and airflow. The water lift is measured in mmH2O, mbar or kPa. It represents the suction force and is the reference parameter for vacuuming liquids and heavy materials. The airflow is measured in m3/h or in l/s.
All vacuum cleaners operate based on air flowing from the opening at the cleaning head or tool, through the vacuum cleaner and the bag and/or filter system and then out the exhaust port. This airflow is created by the vacuum motor, which also may be referred to as the suction motor.
The average life expectancy of a mid-range vacuum cleaner is about six years. You can fix or replace things like blocked filters, jammed brush rolls, frayed hoses, worn-out stick vac batteries and broken accessories yourself.
If you don`t vacuum your carpet, the dirt will break down carpet fibers and create a breeding ground for dust mites and bacteria. In addition, your home will begin to smell musty from the dirt, mites, and other organisms settling into the fibers.
Start the engine and spray

Scope out all the vacuum lines under the hood. Then start the engine and spray each connection with a light stream of water. If a connection sucks in the water, you`ve found your leak. A vacuum leak can cause a rough idle, high rpm, poor gas mileage and even trigger a check-engine light.

Connect a tachometer and vacuum gauge to a none regulated vacuum source on the engine. Disconnect and plug fuel vapor canister vacuum lines. Start engine and run the engine until it reaches normal operating temperature. Note the vacuum gauge reading and any variations in the pointer movement at idle and 2000 RPM.
Electrolux consistently rates well in Canstar Blue`s customer satisfaction ratings, especially in the areas of value for money, quietness and ease of use, amongst others. It has a wide range of vacuums from stickvacs to handhelds, giving you plenty of choice.
If the washer has a minor failure such as a bad lock on the lid or door, it`s usually better to repair the washer instead of replacing it. Completing a minor repair on a well-maintained washer with more than 8 years of expected useful life remaining is typically more economical that replacing the washer.
The average life expectancy of a new washing machine is 11 years. Consumer Reports recommends replacing any appliance that`s more than eight years old, unless it`s a high-end model and has a particular appeal to you.
The manufacture date is represented by the numerical digit in the 3rd position of the serial number. Please note! In some cases the year digit in the example above covers decades. So it could be for 2014-2004-1994.
Where are Electrolux products made? Today, Electrolux manufactures its appliances out of factories in Sweden, Mexico, U.S.A., Turkey, China, Ukraine, Poland, and Germany.

So, the usual areas that cause suction loss include the wrong height setting, stuck rollers, a faulty gasket, a broken vacuum belt, a filled bag, or a clogged hose.
Suction pressure is the negative difference in pressure between two places that drags liquid or gas from a higher pressure state to a lower pressure state. The suctional force in plants is caused by transpiration. This force aids the plant in obtaining essential minerals from the soil.
Vacuum suspension uses an active pump to create a negative pressure differential that doesn`t depend upon the prosthetic leg position. In a suction socket you still have some movement, but with elevated vacuum you eliminate almost all pistoning. Suction suspension basically is just a sealed chamber.
Suction pressure should be kept at less than 200 mmHg in adults. It should be set at 80 mmHg to 120 mmHg in neonates. [3] The catheter size used for suction should be less than 50% of the internal diameter of the endotracheal tube.

My electrolux is over ten years old now and doe not have much suction. Changed the bar still no suction or very little. What gives? Wjymw
ANSWER : I am the Sales Coordinator with Electrolux, and personally it sounds to me like your machine could use a service check. Your local Aerus/ Electrolux office should be able to help you out with that no problem. If you are having trouble reaching them feel free to call my office (570)326-1731 and ask for Liz. I hope this is able to help you out.

I have a Electrolux Epic 6500 SR canister vacum cleaner. It is nine years old and for the past few weeks it has started shutting off for no apparent reason. The symbol for bag change lights up and it cuts off, but even after I have put a new bag in, it still does the same thing. Do you have any suggestions? There is a little button or switch that the top of the bag fits on. Do you think it could be the problem?
ANSWER : Your machine is probably clogged, look through the wands, look in the bottom attachment, to see if there is anything stuck there. You can also drop a marble through the hose itself to see if anything is stuck there as well. To unclog the hose try holding the attachment end of the hose were you would normally plug the hose in. ( the goal is to **** the clog out the way it came in).

Vacuum cleaner hi.this is 10 yrs old and not overly worked.bags are changed regularly and the micro filter has been changed at least three times over ten years.it goes well for about 2o minutes then loses power with not much “suck”after that.sometimes shutting down completely, because of overheating i presume,or just carries on at a much lower'”suck”.have tied shaking bag inside but no luck.any suggestions out there or can you tell me the agents support office for new zealand[auckland].many thank
ANSWER : What brand vacuum is it?

No suction Hello – any help with this would be much appreciated!

I just changed the bag and filters. The machine runs, seems normal, but there is no suction. There is no blockage of the hose, as indicated by the fact that that little viewer window above where the hose connects to the unit is not showing the red portion that it shows when there is something blocking the hose (god, this is hard to describe!).

If I disconnect the hose and put my hand over the hole, I feel some suction. But

ANSWER : Well, it actually sounds like there is a blockage. Try removing your hose and dropping something through it, like a quqrter. If it comes through, no clog. If it is clogged, I believe that machine has a blower on the upper part of the cleaner (maybe in the bag compartment towards the top. You can take out the filter holder and plug the hose in there and run the unit . Does the blockage come out? If not, Try shaking the hose, or you can put a stiff wire in it to try to free it. Do not run water through it. If there is no blockage at all, then you will probably need to take it to a service center. But I am pretty confident that we are looking at a clog situation. Let me know if this fixesya! Thanks, Rene (vacuum Doctor)

My electrolux oxygen cannister has the “bag change” light on when there is a new bag. The light stays on when the suction power is high (to pick up small particles) and it won’t pick up, but the ight goes off when the suction power is low (to pick up big objects). I changed the hepa filter, cleaned the motor filter and changed bags, but all that didn’t help.
ANSWER : You may have a clog in the hose, and/or the inlet by the brush roll. A clog will turn on that light as well as a full bag.

I have a dyson DC28 vacuum and the power button flashes on and off and the beater bar quit turning. I turned it over and found some string caught on the beater bar which I removed, but the beater bar still does’nt turn and the power button still flashes on and off. I hope you can give me a solution to this problem.
ANSWER : I had the same symptom with my wife’s DC28. The problem was associated with the cam driven height adjustment mechanism. The beater bar must rock freely up and down when pressing on the tabs that the end cam lobes actuate. On ours I found hair and crud jammed in between the end of the beater bar and the side of the vacuum head preventing it from moving freely. To clean it out I fashioned a hook tool by straightening a paper clip and bending the tip at 90*, then took a flat screwdriver to pry the gap open a bit so I could use my tool to clean out the buildup.

I removed the plate that holds the cam in place (6 torx screws) to gain access to the rocker tabs, although in hind sight I could have probably just left it in place. It doesn’t matter how you set the cam back into place. It’s self aligning with the aid of the micro-switches inside.

Hope this helps

The beater bar on my Dyson won’t turn. The vacuum runs and suctions but the bar won’t turn and the belt is not broke. The beater bar did get a carpet fiber caught and wrapped around it which stopped the bar and I removed the bar to cut the fiber loose and replaced it and now it won’t turn
ANSWER : The belt doesn’t have to be broken to make the vacuum not work correctly. If the belt is stretched the vacuum won’t operate the way it is supposed to. You can get replacement Dyson Belts here:

The suction for carpet cleaning is great but there is very little suction through the hose. I have cleaned out the hose but there is still very little suction. What else can I do?
ANSWER : Have you tried cleaning the hose from the vacuum end, the end that feeds the sweepings into the cannister/bag? Might be something close to that end of the hose..Also, one reason for a hose not to work is the possibility of a cut or broken hose or a loose connection..The closer an opening like this might be to the vacuum end of the hose, the less suction the unit will have through the hose as it will pull air through the hole/break easier than through the full length of the hose.
