Today, Elna is the premier brand manufactured by Janome. Elna is active in more than 60 countries, throughout the world.
Unfortunately during the 1990`s with escalating development costs of new models and a slow down in sales, they went the way of other European manufacturers before them and finally in 1995 the company went into bankruptcy and was sold off. The Elna name continued in the market place with machines being produced in Asia.
Swiss designed Elna sewing machine range host a wide choose, everything from basic mechanical models to sophisticated computerised machines capable of sewing delicate embroidery. Recognised as being well-built, reliable & excellent quality Elna`s strong reputation still stands today.
In the USA, its subsidiary is Janome America located in Mahwah, New Jersey; it also owns the Swiss brand Elna. The company manufactures all of its machines in the same factories.
Elna is a Swiss brand and former manufacturer of textile machines, including fabric presses and sewing, overlock and coverstitch machines.
Isaac Merritt Singer invented the world`s first practical sewing machine in 1850. Since 1851, the name SINGER® has been synonymous with sewing. This was the year of Isaac Singer`s patent on the first practical sewing machine, making the official beginning of SINGER as a company and its leadership in the industry.
In 1995 the company was absorbed by Janome, a famous Japanese manufacturer of sewing machines. Today Elna lives on in its long-standing products lines and proud claims of honoring its Swiss quality heritage.
Elna Sewing Machines is a Swiss brand that has been a household name in the sewing industry for over 80 years. Founded in Geneva in 1940, Elna quickly established itself as a leading manufacturer of high-quality sewing machines that were designed to meet the needs of both amateur and professional sewers.
Best sewing machine for reliability: Singer sewing machines proved to be the most reliable. Best sewing machine for features: Elna sewing machines ranked best for functionality. Best sewing machine for quietness: Janome sewing machines were seen as the least noisy.
In general, sewing machines are known to last well over five years and sometimes as long as 25 years. However, the conditions that the sewing machine is exposed to will make a huge difference in its lifespan.
In Japanese, the word Janome (pronounced Ja-NO-me) means “eye of the snake.” The company earned the name in the 1920s when founder Yosaku Ose, a pioneer in Japanese sewing manufacturing, began to use a round metal bobbin system instead of the traditional long shuttle.
Georg Michael Pfaff made the first PFAFF® sewing machine in Kaiserslautern, Germany at the start of the industrial revolution.
Additionally, James are more sturdy than Berninas and tend to be less expensive. However, Berninas can sew more intricate stitches than Janomes and often have more features overall. Ultimately, it is up to the individual shopper as to which machine they prefer for their specific needs.
Janome Sewing Machine Co. Ltd was founded in 1921 as Japan`s first domestic sewing machine manufacturer. It was founded by Yosaku Ose as the `Pine Sewing Machine Factory` with Shigeru Kamematsu and Shoichi Tobimatsu in Takinogwa, Japan.
Janome`s HD5000 Black Edition is our top overall sewing machine pick for the average home seamstress and quilter. Made from a sturdy, heavy-duty aluminum body and outfitted with a hard, snap-on cover, it`s able to regularly tackle tougher fabrics and still last for years and years.
About SVP Worldwide

SVP Worldwide, doing business through SVP-Singer Holdings, Inc. and its affiliates, is the world`s largest consumer sewing machine company, accounting for approximately one out of every three sewing machines sold annually globally.

A larger machine generally offers a larger work space. This equates to more space for your hands, more space for you to get in and around the sewing machine arm, and more space for larger projects.
Probable Causes: – Top or bobbin thread has not been set correctly. – The thread does not match the needle. – Thread tension is not properly set.
With the Elna # 1 in 1940, we launched the first ever compact, portable, electric sewing machine with a free arm. This innovative model was followed by many other breakthroughs, among which the elna Supramatic introducing expandability of stitch packages or the elnapress, the first home ironing press.
BERNINA Sewing Machines – Swiss Tradition Since 1893 – BERNINA.
In France, the first mechanical sewing machine was patented in 1830 by tailor Barthélemy Thimonnier, whose machine used a hooked or barbed needle to produce a chain stitch. Unlike his predecessors, Thimonnier actually put his machine into production and was awarded a contract to produce uniforms for the French army.
Elna is another Swiss company with a very good reputation, although they are not considered as good as a Bernina, both their sewing machines and overlockers are of the best quality in terms of overall design and functionality.
A backstitch is one of the strongest hand sewing stitches. The backstitch gets its name because the needle goes into the fabric behind the previous stitch. On the contrary, with a running stitch, the needle simply passes through the fabric an even distance in front of the previous stitch.

Our beautiful Bernina 730 sewing machine has been stored in the garage in its original case, and that wrapped in plastic, for a few years now. Temperatures have been both hot and cold in the garage, but the environment was dust-free.

We have brought the Bernina in, set it up, oiled it as specified in the manual, with the original sewing machine oil. We have correctly threaded the machine and the bobbin thread is up.

When we press on the pedal to sew, the machine gets electricity and buzzes

ANSWER : Hello and thank you for using Fixya ….
From what you describe there can be only 2 causes…Either the machine is still stuck ..and the motor buzzes cause it can not spin it ..and in this case it needs to be oiled more..and be spun by hand until it moves well and free…and after that it will work ..or during the storage ..from condense or so ..the motor is stuck ..and needs to be checked…In this second case ..it probably need to be oiled too (the motor ) ..and the coils changed..
Have a nice day ..!

Need a replacement drive belt for my hoover lark u4043 not sure about last no. it’s an old machine, but this one is in perfect condition, minus the drive belt.
my local vacuum specialist says they can’t get them anymore. where can I get one or a suitable alternative?
ANSWER : Hi
As you know the Hoover Lark was more or less a rebodied Hoover Junior. The U4043/ (are you sure its not U4034?) model should use the same round drive belts as the Hoover Junior 1346 so youre looking for the old rubber ring type belts which are circular rubber rather than the flat types (usually ribbed) for the later 1980s U1104 series. You can find these types almost anywhere these days as these cleaners go on for ages.

Hello, I have a Hoover quadraflex Powermatic central vacuum system Model # s8099-031 that requires a new replacement 35 ft hose…I have contacted Hoover and they do not know where to buy a replacement hose for this model. I live in Canada. Any idea where I can get a replacement hose for this system? Thanks kindly, Tammy
ANSWER : Tammy, no info re your location, so I”l try this.
Your Hoover hose is shot because it was made of rubber. There are new swivel handled, tangle proof lighter hoses made of vinyl which will last much longer and can be adapted to the old Hoover head by changing the upper steel tube.
Find a Hoover service center, outlet in the yellow pages and ask for the “NEW “style, gray“Plastiflex“ brand hose and upper adapter tube sold with new Hoovers at Costco and you will be all set. Then, when the head eventually dies, you can upgrade to a far better one , while still having the Hoover cannister, the hose and tools do not need to match the original tank.
