How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

When your Dyson no longer powers on even after charging the most likely cause is a damaged battery. This means the battery will no longer hold a charge and will need to be replaced. Once a new battery is purchased you can learn how to replace it by visiting our battery replacement page here.
This trick fixed it perfectly:- Unplug the charger from the wall. Plug it in again. Attach your Dyson and press the trigger (on button) for around 20 seconds (nothing will happen, just keep it pressed). My Dyson worked perfectly again straight away after doing this.
The problem may lie in your vacuum cleaner`s adapter, charging dock, or battery and the electrical outlet. Try plugging your vacuum cleaner in to another outlet. If it is now working, the problem was in the first outlet that you have used. You should contact a certified electrician if you need to fix that outlet.
To reset the Brush bar press the Brush bar control button twice or switch the machine off and back on.
It`s possible there`s a power consumption issue, with there just not being enough residual charge to run the machine. A new battery should fix this. My other thought is that it`s overheating. If too much power is pushed through the motor, which MAX power does, it could stop after a few seconds if it become hot.
This Dyson vacuum model comes with an automatic safety system that will turn off the machine if it begins to overheat. If you find that your machine is turning off intermittently, the filter in your vacuum is most likely full and covering the ventilation system. Remove the filter, then empty and wash it.
Flashing blue light indicates that the battery is not charging. Re-fit the charger or try another socket. If the flashing persisits please call the Dyson Helpline. A solid amber light indicates that the battery is not charging due to a tempoarary fault (e.g. too hot/cold).
The LED light on the end of the handle will pulse with a blue LED light when charging, and the light will go out when fully charged. It can take up to four hours to fully charge your battery.
Sometimes your vacuum pulsates on and off or keeps dying when using the extra powerful `Max Mode`, which can be related to the charge of your battery. Try turning this function off by pressing the Max button on your vacuum.
Over time, all batteries are subject to degradation. So if your run time has declined when the machine is not in Max / Boost mode, it might be time to buy a new battery. All our machines come with a 2-year initial warranty that includes the battery.
A Dyson vacuum cleaner has a lifespan of around 10 years. This is considerably longer than most other vacuums. So, if you`re looking for a high-quality vacuum cleaner that will last you for a long time, a Dyson could be a good choice. However, remember that Dyson vacuums are expensive.
Summary. Dyson batteries should last around 2-6 years before needing to be replaced. This wide range reflects the fact that how you care for and maintain the battery will affect how long it lasts. If you want your vacuum`s battery to last longer, make sure it`s stored at room temperature.
The most common cause of no power is the machine overheating and cutting out. In this case once the vacuum cleaner loses power leave it for at least half an hour and then try turning it back on again. If it comes back on again after an hour then clean your filters and check for blockages.
To reset the machine, turn the power off (using either the power button on the remote or the Main body), wait 60 seconds and then turn back on.
If your Dyson vacuum refuses to turn on, its battery might not be charged. Charge the vacuum`s battery for at least two hours. After the battery is fully charged, power on the vacuum and try using it again.
One of the first things to do when your Dyson vacuum cleaner keeps starting and stopping is to empty the bin. It may be full, or the machine may simply perceive it as too full to continue working. Dyson vacuum cleaners require constant airflow through them to work, and a full bin can stop this from happening.
If you find that your machine is turning off intermittently, the filter in your vacuum is most likely full and covering the ventilation system. Remove the filter, then empty and wash it. Allow the filter to dry for at least 24 hours, or until it is completely dry.
Summary. Dyson batteries should last around 2-6 years before needing to be replaced. This wide range reflects the fact that how you care for and maintain the battery will affect how long it lasts. If you want your vacuum`s battery to last longer, make sure it`s stored at room temperature.

Hi, this is our third Dyson DC-16.. the Trigger was shorting out on the first two.. Now we have the third one for about a year.. on charge when not using it.. don’t use it every day, but for quick pickups only.. Just how long should the battery last? I was sent a new charger, didn’t help.. it just won’t hold the charge even tho two green lights are solid, but one red light does show up..
ANSWER : How are you charging your battery? Every battery has a memory. If you dont let it die the first come times then charge to full the battery will assume 40% is 100%.

I have a Roomba 560 (it’s still in warranty !!) and, after my summer vacation, it has a problem.
When I’m charging Roomba, the orange light blinks (and this is normal!) but this orange blinking continues forever…. the light doesn’t change to green.
If I detach Roomba from the charger, the light become green and it works normally until the light changes to red and I have to charge it again.

WHY, DURING THE CHARGING PHASE, THE LIGHT DOESN’T CHANGE FROM ORANGE-BLINKING TO GREEN?

HAVE I

ANSWER : The problem is not with the charger itself but it is with the battery inside the Roomba. It sunds like one or more of the cells has gone bad so its not holding the same charge as it did. I would recomend sending it in while the warranty is still valid so they will replace it. Your charger and the Roomba itself should be fine.

A few tips to keep the battery working longer:
Only charge the battery when it is drained all the way to zero. It will help keep the battery active.

Only charge the battery until it is full and then disconect it from the power source. It will keep it active longer plus it will help keep your electric bill down.

We have the water hooked up at the back of machine. there is a spout for the water to come in and fill the ice tray.but is does not. If we turn the water on it fills up the space under the ice basket. I keep getting red light and then the two smal llight one ice and one water come on. We can hear the motor trying to fill the ice try and then lights come on. Please help me this so I can use this product. It did not come with a manual.
ANSWER : The water inlet valve on the back of unit opens when the ice maker needs water. If the valve doesn’t seal good because of sediment or wear it will continue to drip and when the water reaches the ice maker supply tube it will freeze blocking the fill tube.. You can take the water line off the valve and watch to see if it drips.
With the fill tube blocked with ice the water can drip down the back wall or drip into the ice bin or just stop up. You can use a hairdryer to thaw the tube out.

After being on the charger for days and the green light is on I press the clean button. The Roomba leaves the charging unit and travels about 1 foot then the red light comes on and it beeps and won’t do anything more the red light continues to pulse.
ANSWER : Buy a new battery ,the old one isn’t holding a charge

My handheld dyson is not working – initially it was cutting out after only a few mins then seconds now it won’t work at all despite showing green light ??
ANSWER : Hi there, it’s Jack at Dyson.

I’m sorry to hear your DC31 Animal is only working intermittently. When fully charged, this machine should have a maximum runtime of 10 minutes, or 6 minutes on the maximum power setting.

There are several factors which could cause this, and to determine what’s at fault we’d need to take you through some quick diagnostic checks when you have your machine to hand. The machine would also need to be fully charged, so please make sure it’s had 3.5 hours to recharge before calling us.

Roomba Charging? Flashing Lights
ANSWER : Call iRobot. Your charger is broken.

I want to recharge my Philips PET741 D/05 portable DVD Player. But when I push the plug into the charging point on the side of the player,at one point, as the plug goes in, there is a quick flash of red – but no more. The red charging light does not light up, and the player does not charge. The plug cannot be held at the point where the sudden momentary flash takes place
ANSWER : 1.With the AC power unit plugged in to the wall plug into your dvd player and wiggle it a little bit and see if the light goes on or off. If so the the power port is bad. .2.Try a different wall outlet to see if it helps..3.Ensure there are no cuts or rips in the power cord. .4.If you have done the following steps and the cord looks good it may be your battery on the dvd player itself..5.If the battery is defective you may need to purchase a new one, keep in mind you may need to purchase another dvd player if you are unable to locate the battery seperatly..6.I would suggest contacting the manufacture and see if you could get just the battery. Hope this helps.
