How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

Check that the vacuum cleaner is plugged into a working power outlet and that fuses and breakers don`t need resetting. An activated thermal cut-out due to a blockage is the next most likely cause of the problem. Check for blockages in the hose and filters, and remove any obstructions that you find.
If this appliance also appears to have no power, there is possibly a problem with the supply at that socket. Check the socket is switched on and that there is not an isolator switch somewhere in your home which may be switched off or tripped out. If there is an isolator or fuse box, check it is also switched on.
The first thing to check is the power source, this includes the socket, plug and power cord, working your way to the drive motor and if appropriate, the vacuum hose. Firstly, change the electrical outlet socket. If the vacuum still isn`t turning on, check the power cord from end to end.
A damaged vacuum hose, clogged motor air filter or bad suction motor can cause the vacuum cleaner to shut off during use. A tripped overload on the vacuum suction motor can shut off the vacuum cleaner during use. If your vacuum has a reset button, push it; if the vacuum seems hot, let it cool off first.
If you are stuck facing an appliance with no power check your home`s fuse box, if something is going wrong the washer will blow the fuse or trip the electrics, replacing the fuse or resetting the trip should bring power back to your appliance.
Make sure the machine is tightly plugged in. Next, check for a tripped circuit breaker. Reset the breaker and try to start the washer. If neither is at fault, you may have a damaged power cord.
The most common problems found in vacuum cleaners are low suction force, excessive noise, burning smell, vacuum not turn on, and overheating. These issues can be fixed by either cleaning the device or replacing some parts of the device. At times, it is best to seek a professional to fix the cleaner effectively.
A strong odor from the shellac that coats the copper coil windings is an indicator that the motor is about to or has burnt out. If the motor is still running, even if it turns on and off by itself as it is heating and cooling, you can still run the motor until it gives up for good.
The most common problem with a vacuum cleaner is also the easiest to remedy: clogs in the hose or attachments. Also the electrical cord, motor, switch, fan, brushes, and motor bearings can all need repair or replacement. The drive belt may need replacing; and the attachments, hoses, and filters may need unclogging.
Simply plug the product back in or restore the power and then switch off the appliance using the button on the control panel. The door will now unlock.
The average life expectancy of a mid-range vacuum cleaner is about six years. You can fix or replace things like blocked filters, jammed brush rolls, frayed hoses, worn-out stick vac batteries and broken accessories yourself.
Problems can occur when overused or clogged filters cause the vacuum motor to overheat. This not only shortens the motor life but causes a loss of suction. In some cases, total motor burn out can occur.
When an RCD circuit breaker trips or a fuse blows when you switch the appliance on or off, this is usually caused by leakage to the ground or a short circuit. The problem can be caused by the incorrect connection of the appliance.
Washing machines often have a fuse that controls power to the working parts of the machine. Before you attempt to replace this component, you should first unplug your washer. Then, remove the necessary screws to access the machine`s fuse panel.
You should check the outlet to make sure it`s working. Then, check if a fuse is blown or a circuit breaker thrown. If those both work, see if the Delay Start button or Control Lock feature has been activated. Sometimes it`s as simple as opening and closing the door to reset the washer.
Load is too small or unbalanced

For maximum performance, It is important that the load is evenly balanced inside the drum before the machine starts the spin section of the cycle. This will prevent the machine from excessive vibration and movement.

The main indicator of worn bearings is if your washing machine drum is making a grinding noise while turning. You can test this by placing your hand inside the tub, giving it a spin for yourself and listening out for any grinding noises.
If your vacuum is fairly new and this is the first time you`re experiencing a problem, repairs are probably the best option. In fact, your vacuum may still be covered under warranty. However, if you`ve had to pay for multiple repairs and you`ve had the appliance for many years, it might be time for a new one.
As a general rule, if the repair is going to cost less than half the cost of a new vacuum cleaner, it`s best to go ahead and get it repaired. When the service tops half the price of a new machine, it`s probably best to invest in a newer model.
A thermal cut off is a heat-sensitive device that automatically disconnects the power to a vacuum`s motor when the operating temperature exceeds a safe value.
If the filter bag or canister is too full, it cannot pick up any additional particles and will simply jam or the motor will overheat and shut down. So, when you suspect your unit is about 75 per cent full, empty it!
VOLTAGE TYPES (VAC / VDC)

This means the fuse can be used in a circuit he voltage maximum operating at this voltage . For example; if your fuse was rated at 250VAC, it could be used in a 250VAC circuit or in a or less lower voltage circuit such as 12VAC, but it must not be used in a circuit operating above 250VAC ie.

A standard 13 amp domestic cartridge fuse would be fine.

How can I get my DAB radio working again?
I have a Sony XDRS100CD with DAB radio. The DAB radio has stopped working although I can still use the CD and get FM radio. The unit has a readout on the front that usually shows the time and this stopped working too, presumably because it got the time via the DAB radio.
The unit works from mains and batteries although I have only ever used it on mains.
ANSWER : I have the same problem… did you ever get a fix..

The problem has been getting worse. It works, then cuts off. Then works and cuts off. Making sure the canister is not full. Time b/w it working is getting longer and longer. Almost seems this time when I change the outlet it is plugged into it works. But then shuts off quicker than it was doing before. I’m getting very frustrated.
ANSWER : We had exactly the same problem with our Animal. After the motor was replaced under warranty a different engineer came out and diagnosed it as the cyclone chamber itself being clogged.(the bit with the purple cylinders on it). This is completely unserviceable and it too was replaced under warranty – along with a second motor! Not the answer you wanted I’m sure but you’re wasting your time looking for a problem elsewhere. Ultimately the motor is pulling through a clogged chamber and you will burn it out! Hope this helps…

I fear the motor has failed on my Electrolux Oxygen EL6988D.

Just six months after the warranty expired, I was vacuuming when it suddenly stopped. There was no blockage in the tube and it wasn’t working hard or long . . . it just stopped.

I looked around the Internet and it appeared that many similar Electrolux units have a fuse. I hoped my problem might just be a blown fuse, so I took the machine apart.

There are two small printed circuit boards, but no fuse. There is an in-line

ANSWER : Hi,
.
.I don’t think you need a new motor, but please stop testing the machine with live power. It’s dangerous and unnecessary. Your tests indicate to me that the motor is fine and your thermal-fuse – I think this is what you referred to as “thermatrol” is blown. I assume you used an ohm-meter to test the continuity across the brushes? If so, and the reading was 0 ohms accross the brushes, then your motor is fine. Also, the 120v reading at the motor terminals with the power on shows that you are getting power to the motor. The reason there is no continuity at the motor terminals is because this circuit is routed through the “thermatrol”. If the thermatrol is open-circuit, i.e. blown there will be no continuity here.
.
.If you need parts, I can probably help you find a supplier, but let’s establish which parts need replacing first! Please confirm the resistance readings from the brushes and we’ll go from there, but no more live testing please, particularly the 120v A/C direct to the motor from the wall socket!
.
.Regards,
.BElectric

Hoover Vacuum works, then stops in 3-5 mins. Works again in a couple of hours
ANSWER : More than likely there is an inline over current breaker that is bad or weak and needs to be replaced. This is for overcurent protection of the motor. It is fairly common for the protection circuit to go bad

Hoover Windtunnel My Hoover Windtunnel is 3 years old. It worked great until yesterday when it lost all suction. I have followed the manual to trouble shoot any possible clogs and could find none. Then I noticed that when I remove the dirt collection cup and held my hand over the vent the suction is fine and strong. So… I replaced the hepa filter thinking that might be the problem. That didnt’ work. The motor runs fine. The suction without the dirt cup inserted is strong. As soon as you insert
ANSWER : Mine does the same thing. There is no suction. I found that there is a door that opens when you tilt the handle in the down possition. I think there should be a spring in place so it can open. Until I find a replacement spring I have to open the door manually throught the opening under the light.

Hoover S3765 I have a Hoover S3765 (serial # 040600024465) and the unit stops working for no apparent reason. The light on top of the unit goes off when it shuts down, so I don't believe it's a problem between the hose, the tube and the floor unit. Sometimes I have to let it sit for over one hour before it will come back on. I've tried different electrical plugs too. Still won't turn on. Any ideas or suggestions?

Thanks

ANSWER : If you light and nozzle motor both go off at the same time, you might have a bad power cord. Mine had this problem which I could verify by jiggling/twisting the cord near the strain relief on the nozzle. It would go on and off as I did this. The cord is cheap to replace, around $13 for the part shipped. Part number is 59134072.
