How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

There may be something in the dust container or bag that smells bad. Empty the container or replace the bag before using your appliance again. The air intake pipeline of the brush accessories may be clogged, or the roller accessory may be blocked due to dirt build-up.
Vacuums cleaners can smell from for various reasons; pet dander, moisture was sucked up… The most common cause is old dirt sitting stagnant in the collection chamber, bags, or filters. Vacuum bags should be changed every four to six weeks or once full.
Baking soda is a natural deodorizer that can help absorb odors in your vacuum cleaner. Simply sprinkle some baking soda on your carpet before vacuuming, and it will absorb any unpleasant smells. You can also sprinkle some baking soda in the dustbin or dustbag to absorb odors there.
Treat your carpet with a mixture of one cup of white vinegar and two cups of warm water. Use a spray bottle to mist over the carpet gently. Be careful not to oversaturate it, as increased moisture can lead to mold growth. Pour a copious amount of baking soda – an amazing odor neutralizer – on the carpet.
A clogged air filter can`t leave anything clean and will eventually break down from the inside causing the vacuum to first smell, and eventually not suck well causing it to break.
Pour a gallon of hot water into a bucket large enough to fit the filter, then pour in 1/2 cup of liquid bleach. The bleach will kill bacteria and mold quickly without harming the filter.
Vacuuming with a non-HEPA vacuum is dangerous given that it can send out even more mold and mildew spores right into the air of the home as well as you risk of them finding a food resource when they land. This is why you should never vacuum over a patch of mold growth utilizing a non-HEPA vacuum.
When the vacuum cleaner stinks, get to know your filters and change them as needed. The filters are usually replaceable, and some vacuum cleaners have easy-to-clean filters. Be sure you have the device unplugged while you are cleaning it.
Carpet cleaner smells like burning and may be caused by overheating debris in the machine or a malfunctioning motor. To resolve the issue, unplug the cleaner, inspect for blockages, clean the filters, and check for damaged components. If the problem persists, contact a professional or the manufacturer for assistance.
To get the last of the musty smell out of your house, use a natural odor absorber like activated charcoal or baking soda. These products will absorb the smell, so you`ll want to throw them away and replace them every two weeks or so.
White distilled vinegar is an odor-neutralizer, thanks to its acetic acid content. It can tackle musty smells that have settled in the room. To deodorize your room, start by dusting your ceilings and walls. Then, fill a spray bottle with half white-distilled vinegar and half water.
Vinegar is an especially useful odor solution for spot cleaning. It`s also great for smells due to mold or mildew, as it can actually remove the fungus as well as the odor. To treat your carpet, mix white or apple cider vinegar with warm water in a ratio of one part vinegar to two parts water.
Not cleaning and vacuuming your carpets regularly is not only a health hazard but can leave behind a bad residual smell that will affect you daily.
Vacuuming regularly (including in between the couch cushions) and putting a fresh bag inside rids soft surfaces especially of odors.
If you`ve noticed mildew in your bathroom, you can typically get rid of it using some white vinegar and baking soda. To do this, fill a spray bottle with white vinegar, spray the areas that are covered with mildew and let the white vinegar sit for a few hours.
Vacuuming is an important part of the mold cleanup process, but we don`t recommend using a regular vacuum. Household vacuums and standard wet/dry vacs aren`t effective because they don`t have the right kind of filters to properly trap the mold.
When vinyl fumes are overpowering you with pungent odors that can last for days, just take the source outside and lay it out in the warm sunshine. Turn the offending item over every few hours, and the smell that would have lasted days will be gone in less than 24 hours.
Vinegar is a well known odor-remover. Wipe the surfaces of the plastic with vinegar. Allow it to set for several minutes. Then, either rinse or wash it away.
Most yeasts and molds are heat-sensitive and destroyed by heat treatments at temperatures of 140-160°F (60-71°C).
Remove Mildew Stains by Washing

Warm water and mild antibacterial dish detergent is effective on mildew. Mix a solution of white vinegar diluted with water to clean up light mildew stains. Spray full strength vinegar to eliminate heavy accumulations of mildew.

Mix equal parts hot water and vinegar and pour in your carpet cleaner`s reservoir tank. Clean your carpets as per your cleaner`s instructions. Yes, vinegar might leave a temporary pickle smell in your home but it dissipates and disappears as your carpets dry.
Baking soda absorbs and neutralizes odors, making it the absolute MVP carpet cleaner. Powders are super easy: Simply sprinkle them on, let them sit and work their magic, then vacuum them up.
If baking soda alone doesn`t do the trick, make your own deep cleaning carpet odor remover by mixing the following ingredients: 1 liter of water. 2 tablespoons hydrogen peroxide. ¼ cup of baking soda.
Does baking soda ruin your vacuum? Baking soda`s minuscule size can clog the filters and potentially damage vacuum cleaners – particularly the motor. If you`re using a bagless vacuum, the potential chokepoint would be the cyclonic filters and the post-motor HEPA filter. For bagged vacuums, it`s the HEPA filter.

Turbine Hi I found out through your site that my turbin is bad on my steam vac and I found some information as well on how to disasemble the steam vac to get to the turbine but still was wondering if there were some more detailed instructions on how to remove the turbin. I am a sigle mom and doing the work on the steam vac myself and need a little more detailed instructions. Please help asap and have a bless day.
ANSWER : There are some screws on the bottom that have to come out so you can remove the top housing. Take the brush block out, there are 2 screws above where it sits. The turbine sits near the front, and in the mid section, 2 screws on the front of it and 2 long screws from underneath, if you already haven’t removed them. Unhook the hoses to it thenpick it out and replace with the new one. ( Some models near the back of the housing, is a catch on each side that you have to unhook to release the top).

Hoover steam vac, brushes won’t rotate, have cleaned filter by brushes, removed brushes and they rotate okay when off steam vac, tried to ajust level for carpet cleaning and brushes still don’t move
ANSWER : There are three things to check when experiencing ‘no spin’ on the cleaning brushes. 1) Check the small pull out filter screen under the machine. It must stay clean for air to pass to the turbine which powers the brushes. 2) Check that the long shaft on the brush assembly is not broken off. This shaft inserts into the turbine motor and powers the brushes. If you’re handy you can replace just the long shaft brush rather than replacing the whole brush assembly. Look for the brush on Ebay 3) If you’re handy you can dissemble the machine and inspect the turbine motor which powers the brushes. In all cases the bearings seize in the turbine. You can often free them up and re-lube them to get more service from them or simply replace the turbine assembly. Don’t throw your Steam Vac out because the brushes no longer turn…you can fix it!

Beater brushes not turning on the wife’s Hoover Steam Vac model F5905-900. Found one prior ”solution” stating that it sounded like the belt was bad. That was my original thought, but on checking schematics and trying to find part numbers at Sears Parts Direct and at Hoover, it does not appear the F5905-900 steam vac HAS any belts to begin with. What’s next??
ANSWER : This one I can tell you about from personal experience with that generation Hoover Steam Vac. After using it about 7 or 8 times my brushes stopped turning also.

I disassembled it (kind of like disassembling a Chinese puzzle box) and found that the Turbine which develops the torque for the brushes simply has worn out. I replaced the part and it works fine now. Unfortunately unless you are familiar with that sort of repair it’s high on the difficulty side. When I took it to a local shop they wanted about $150 to repair it. That was more than half the price I paid for it. It’s simply not a very good design. Hoover wont’ talk about them yet they are still selling them.

The least expensive place to purchase a replacement part is at: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250648382497&rvr_id=&crlp=1_263602_263622&UA=%3F*F%3F&GUID=70355e091290a0aad3175ab7ff9f985a&itemid=250648382497&ff4=263602_263622.

The repair shop wanted to charge me $60 for the part.

It seems that the manufacturer is ignoring the problem and it’s a great claim for a class action suit against them.

Regards
Zashiban
