How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Check that the brush bar is clean and not damaged
If the cleaner becomes noisy or starts vibrating, it may be because some debris has got tangled around the brush roll or agitator situated in the bottom of the cleaner.
Worn out bearings on the brush roll will make a vacuum much noisier. This is a good time to check them after cleaning and inspecting the brush roll. Try spinning each bearing by hand. Some brush rolls have only one bearing on the roll, and the other bearing is in the head where the roll is mounted.
You may experience a whistling sound in your Vax vacuum, this can come from the dirt container. To resolve this, remove the dirt container, empty and clean the seals. Replace and try the vacuum again.
Why is the vacuum is blowing dusty air out of the back? Simple: the bag or canister is full and the vacuum has nowhere to store the dust it is collecting. Empty the canister or bag. If that doesn`t fix it, the vacuum filter needs to be cleaned or changed.
Check for loose articles in the drum
If your appliance is noisy check inside the drum for any foreign objects. It may be helpful to spin the drum once you have taken the items out to ensure everything has been removed and there is nothing else inside.
You may be hearing excessive noise because your filters are dirty. To clean them, watch our Cleaning Filters video. A damaged Brush Roll could also be the problem. To fix, first make sure your vacuum is turned OFF and unplugged.
Check for a plugged hose:
Plugged vacuum hoses are sometimes the reason for a loss in suction. Hoses can get clogged with hair, dust bunnies, string, or anything else that can`t pass through the other end of the hose. Airways inside the machine should be looked at as well. Wherever there is an air passage, check it.
Your Vacuum Pump Is Noisy
Sometimes, extra noise can mean that there are pieces of debris stuck in the system rattling around. It can be an easy fix—just locate and remove the debris. A loud pump could also mean you have worn bearings that need to be replaced or lubricated.
It`s caused by a worn-out motor belt. The burning smell can also be as a result of the rubber belt burning due to the loss of elasticity. All in all, the belt is worn out and needs replacement. To fix the burning smell problem in a vacuum cleaner, you will have to replace the motor belt.
The most common problems found in vacuum cleaners are low suction force, excessive noise, burning smell, vacuum not turn on, and overheating. These issues can be fixed by either cleaning the device or replacing some parts of the device. At times, it is best to seek a professional to fix the cleaner effectively.
One of the easiest ways to increase vacuum cleaner suction is to empty the dust bag or container. Dust containers need to have enough space for airflow, otherwise, they could get clogged and have less suction power. Regularly check your dust compartment and empty or change it when it`s already 70-80% full.
Blockage – when a vacuum cleaner becomes unusually loud, it is normally because of a blockage of some sort. This is a problem that is easily solved by turning off the cleaner, check for blockages in the pipes, and remove them. You can also check and empty the canister to remove any possible blockages there as well.
If the high-pitched noise only starts when you enable the roller, it`s probably struggling to work. That means it`s time to give the brush roller a thorough cleaning. Pliers and scissors can be a big help here. Make sure there are no strands of hair trapped under the roller or on the sides where it rotates.

If the tube is making a hissing noise, there could be air leaking from the tube which prevents the vacuum from picking up dust. The tube`s body may have been damaged by fast moving debris or the connection of the tube to the main body could have loosened through the vibration of the vacuum.
One of the most common reasons for your shark vacuum (and most vacuums for that matter) making a loud suction noise is because there is a blockage. They`re a very common issue, and easily fixed. Blockages occur when there is a large enough build up of dirt or dust that it blocks the air flow to the vacuum.

I cleaned out my dyson ball as it smelt when i hoovered, cleaned filters, washed out canister and took the screws out of the front bar so i could clean near the brushes.. now its making a high pitched noise and when i switch it off it makes a noise like an engine shutting down! Have i disturbed the motor?
ANSWER : Hi its Darran at Dyson.
The screws on the base of the cleaner head should not have to be removed to access the brush bar so it is possible that the brush bar has come out of alignment, hence the noise the machnie is making.
Please ensure that the soleplate has been correctly positioned and that the brush bar is aligned correctly before attempting to use the machine.

Hi folks,
my beam vacuum makes a very loud roaring noise quite often.
the problem started when i was vacuuming up a quantity of vermiculite from my chimney.
i think i overloaded the vacuum i think and it made this loud roaring noise.
the vacuum tends to make thos noise when i am hoovering after 5 minutes or so.
any ideas?.

ANSWER : If the filter bag is bad and didn’t trap all of the dust, then it got into your motor, so you may have a problem with your motor now.

My brush roller stopped spinning so I had to take it off and clean out all the hair that had gotten wound around it. I replaces it and now it is make a lound noise, but only when the brush is on. Could it be the belt making such a loud sound? It wasn’t making this noise before.
ANSWER : Could very well be the belt..When cleaning the brush it is a good idea to add some WD40 at the ends where the plastic pieces are that hold the brush in the vacuum. The brush needs to be able to move freely around the plastic pieces..Add the WD40 and rotate the plastic pieces around the brush until they move freely..Reassemble making sure the belt is put in correctly so the brush moves in the right direction..

Roomba keeps saying clean brushes yet are clean!
ANSWER : Make sure you take off the little cap at the end (the one that spins — just grab it and pull it straight off) and clean under it too. The rest of the brush may look perfectly clean but what happens is that hair gets stuck under spinning cap and, like a slowly growing washer, it pushes the whole brush toward the gear box. When it gets pushed over enough, the large yellow ring starts to rub against the side of the brush deck making it harder for the motor to turn the brush and you get that “remove and clean brushes” message.

Brush bar does not turn & makes a loud noise
ANSWER : You need to clean your roller and replace the clutch assembly that drives the belts. poorly designed vacuum with many flaws.

When I vacuum w/ the brush control in the on position it make a really loud noise, almost like a grinding sound. I have looked at it and nothing seems to be wrong, but I notice that the pin that engages the belt seems to vibrate a bit, possibly creating the noise. It started when I accidentally got part of a plastic grocery bag caught in the brush. Could it have stretched a belt? Nothing is caught any other place and it only makes the noise when the brush in in the on position.
ANSWER : Yes, the belt could have been stretched and is now vibrating and hitting other parts and creating a noise if much of the bag got caught under the belt. If you have another belt for this vacuum, please put it on and see if the noise stops. If it does, then problem solved, if not let me know and we can try something else and you can send a picture or video to me of the problem.

I replaced the belt on my Dirt Devil Featherlite Bagless Vacuum and the brush roller rubs and makes a very loud noise when turned on. I have gone exactly by the manual instructions and made sure the belt and end caps were on correctly, but the bristles still rub the back and it makes a very loud noise. .The Royal Dirt Devil Featherlite Bagless Vacuum has just bushings in the ends of the brushroll and not bearings and once the bushings are bad I suggest that you replace the brushroll in the vacuum and put a new belt on the vacuum as well. There is no way to repair the bushing s in order to it to work properly. The suggested belt change is every 4 to 6 months and to store the extra belts in a Ziploc bag in the refrigerator to keep them fresh. Suggest looking at a local vac dealer. So if you need further assistance, please feel free to contact your local vacuum cleaner dealer in your area or in the yellow pages, or contact the factory phone number or website to further assist you with your questions.

Terrible noise My dyson was working great then started making this horrible noise. I cleaned the bar but noise is still there. I discovered the beater bar went around three passes then froze and started horrible noise again. my husband got the bar turning but after 2 swipes vacuuming it did it again. Can it be fixed or is it time to retire it and buy a new one. Wendy Kiser
ANSWER : That noise is the clutch. A very expensive part and very hard to replace. When a problem with the clutch happens it’s generally not worth the time and money to replace.
I suggest getting a different type of vacuum, maybe a Miele or Sebo. With the money spent on one of those vacuums, you wont have problems like you would with a Dyson. And the cleaning power is so much more powerful than what any Dyson can offer.
