How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

Overheating due to clogged exhaust filter

The exhaust filter can also get clogged, causing a problem with the motor cooling. Therefore, you should also check the exhaust filter if the vacuum cleaner smells burnt. It is usually located on the top or back of the unit, right where the exhaust air comes out.

There`s a small pre motor and a larger exhaust . The exhaust can be either a simple mesh filter much like the pre motor or the optional HEPA. After changing all the filters you can sprinkle some baking soda on the floor and vacuum it up – that usually helps with the pet smells.
There are three main causes for your Miele to not power on: The power switch has failed. The cord reel is damaged. Your motor has gone bad.
If you`re smelling rubber, the belt has either burned out and snapped or the belt has become so stretched out that the roller is not moving and the vacuum belt is getting super heated from the motors RPM.
You`ll need to install a new vacuum belt to solve the burning smell, as vacuum belts can`t be repaired. Fortunately, a vacuum belt is usually straightforward to replace and cheap to buy. On a similar note, a blockage to the brush roll or drive belt can cause a burning smell.
Plastic Burning Smell in House

Faulty wiring or an overheated appliance can have an odor that smells like burning plastic. If it`s coming from your HVAC system, it could be from an overheated blower motor — possibly due to heavy dust buildup or a clogged air filter.

If the filter is clogged, it can cause the vacuum to smell like wet dog. Pet dander can cause allergy problems too so be sure to wash your (sponge) filter or replace it frequently. It is advisable to replace the filter at least every 3 to 6 months to maintain performance and to prevent foul smell.
Durability & Warranty – If you`re looking for a vacuum cleaner with durability and longevity, look no further than Miele. Miele vacuum cleaners are designed and tested to last for 20 years. Miele vacuum cleaners come with a 7-year warranty on the motor and a 1-year warranty on parts and labor.
For a cordless miele stick vacuum cleaner, a temperature limiter switch automatically turns off the vacuum cleaner if it gets too hot. (Some models have a temperature warning light.) Overheating may be caused by a blockage in the vacuum, or due to a full dustbag and/or filters.
If you notice a burning rubber smell from cars, it is often a sign that you have overheated the brakes or tires. Overheating usually occurs when your car`s clutch is slipping or not working properly. If you experience this smell and were using your clutch at the time, let the car cool down, and try again.
Sometimes, a burning rubber smell could be coming from an oil or fluid leak, or even a damaged or worn out drive belt. If you smell burning rubber, head to your nearest Firestone Complete Auto Care for diagnosis and expert engine repair. Loose belts and hoses don`t get better with time.
Some people refer to this as a urine or burning rubber smell. This could be something electrical in the home overheating and melting its insulating plastic or rubber — which could lead to a fire. The most likely culprit is an appliance, such as a dishwasher, washing machine or air conditioner.
Problems can occur when overused or clogged filters cause the vacuum motor to overheat. This not only shortens the motor life but causes a loss of suction. In some cases, total motor burn out can occur.
Clear out hoses, attachments, and brushes of any hair, dirt, and debris. This will allow for restored airflow and should get things going again. Make sure there are no cracks or broken belts impeding the system from running optimally.
Inhaling burnt plastic is bad for you because it can expose you to a number of harmful chemicals. These chemicals include benzene, dioxins, particulates, and toluene. Each of these chemicals can cause a variety of health problems, ranging from respiratory problems to cancer (in severe cases).
What`s the best way to clean the filter of a Miele vacuum? Trick question—because you don`t. Miele vacuum filters have to be replaced, Jonathan says.
You should change the Miele filter bag when you notice that the display of the airflow indicator is filled out with red color. These bags are disposable and designed for one-time use and if you attempt to reuse, you will notice that the suction power of the vacuum will be reduced.
“Do you think it`s worthwhile to repair my Miele appliance?” This is a question I am frequently asked, and my answer is often the same: Yes, it is often worthwhile to repair a Miele appliance. In many cases, a simple service is all that is needed to get your appliance working like new again.
Mould, bacteria and tint can accumulate in the seal of the washing machine. The seal is located close to the door. You should clean the seal regularly to prevent the smell that comes from your washing machine.
Many dogs are naturally afraid of vacuums, just like they may be afraid of thunderstorms. The machine makes a high-frequency noise that can hurt your dog`s ears or cause significant distress. Keep in mind that dogs can hear at much higher pitches than the average human ear, which can increase that fear.
Rinse the filter

Any fine dust remaining in the filter can usually be removed with a gentle rinse under a cold tap – hold the filter under the running water until the water runs clear. You shouldn`t need to use any detergent – just water.

He said Miele was top-tier in the industry, it`s been around longer than most other dishwasher brands, and its dishwasher`s average lifespan is 10–20 years.

Electrolux Epic 6500SR Full Bag sensor working, Does not Reset properly
ANSWER : The problem was a sticking switch that was not being reset. The vacuum on/off switch mechanism is comprised of two switches. One is the main switch that turns the vacuum on and off. The second is a shut off switch that gets tripped when the full bag sensor is engaged. This second switch is supposed to get reset when you push the on/off switch on the outside of the machine. The full bag shutoff switch was stiff and it, therefore, was taking a couple of presses of the on/off switch to move the shutoff switch back into the running position.

We have a dyson dc 07 animal the machine was working fine then switched off after returning to the machine minutes later it wouldnt switch on, i removed on off switch cover and used a short piece of wire across the brown wires flicked the wall switch and it worked, aha i thought faulty switch aquired a new one to no avail and now even the short piece of wire trick doesnt work, has the motor died do you think, it wasnt over heating or making strange noises prior to refusing to work
ANSWER : It could be the motor. I’m having to replace the brushes on my DC 05. It appears that you can only get brushes for the YDK motors in the DYSON, not the Panasonic motor. Which might be saying something about the YDK motors. What happens is that the carbon brushes wear down which is normal. However, the contact wire from the brush to its connector is set so that when the brush wears down, the wire is short enough to stop the spring etc from damaging the commutator. The end result is that you get an intermittent operation of the motor before it finally dies.
.I believe all the DYSONs come with the option of both motors and you cannot really tell which motor you have until you take the thing to bits. You also cannot change motors without changing various other parts on the hoover. On my DC 05 the writing on the YDK motor tells you which one it is.
.This website www. tasweb.org ,select the DC 05 option and scroll down tells you how to take the thing to bits. A search on google etc for your DC 07 may give similar results. Best of luck!

I have a Kirby G4 vacuum cleaner, It did work ok until it started to give off burning smell and lots of sparks from the brushes. I have changed these brushes, the motor still rotates but it still gives off sparks and burning smell. Do i have to change the motor as well?
Can you help please?
Thankyou

Martin

ANSWER : Some debris, even sand or dirt, probably got into the motor, causing damage to the armature. If this is the case, you will need to replace the motor. The burning smell from the motor is generally a sure sign of a bad motor.

Vitamix 5000 stopped working. It stops working each time I use it; while blending I first smell a burning smell and then blender stops and will not start again. After sitting overnight it works again next morning and repeat same process. Any ideas how to repair?
ANSWER : It has an internal thermal shutdown. Let it sit for a while and it will reset itself. You can expedite by putting the motor base in the freezer for a few minutes, or by blowing a hair dryer into the base of the motor.

Unbeknownst to me, someone took the bag out of my Kenmore Progressive vacuum and failed to replace it. I have been vacuuming without a bag for months, and today the vacuum stopped sucking. When I opened up the front to replace the bag, tons of dirt and dust came pouring out. I thoroughly cleaned the vacuum, put in a new bag, but still no sucking power. Just dust coming from the rear vents where one of the filters is. Is the vacuum ruined, or is it a simple solution of buying a new filter?
ANSWER : Sounds like you need to buy a new motor. All that grit and dust will ruin a motor and I’m surprised it lasted as long as it did.
.This is where a vacuum that won’t run without a bag would have been nice. (Aerus for one)

Stopped working – warning light on
ANSWER : Dear Lauren, can you please tell me where to buy these Miele parts? I have a Flamenco ii (red one). I was told by one repair shop owner that mine has the american made version of the motor (as opposed to the german made one). The diagnosis is that the Miele’s motor control circuit board #04416342 is gone bad. But I was quoted $125 for this part. Seems quite expensive to me. Any idea where I can get them cheaper?
Thanks!
