How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?
Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :
Loose connections will cause your vacuum cleaner to lose suction. Make sure that the dust container, the hose, the tube and the brush are all attached properly. If the problem continues, your vacuum cleaner might have a technical problem. If you suspect this to be the case, contact an authorised service agent.
Check that the vacuum cleaner is plugged into a working power outlet and that fuses and breakers don`t need resetting. An activated thermal cut-out due to a blockage is the next most likely cause of the problem. Check for blockages in the hose and filters, and remove any obstructions that you find.
Plug the power cord into your power source. Now arc a wire across the low voltage terminals. You should see a little spark when you touch the terminals and you should hear a “click” inside the board. If there is no spark, then the transformer is bad.
Over time and extended use, a very fine layer of particles will start to line the inside of a vacuum bag, remaining in place even after the bag is emptied. This means that the bag will lose the proper airflow required to let the incoming air escape. As the airflow is restricted, the suction dies down too.
If your vacuum cleaner keeps turning off, this could be due to the following reasons: Blockages – check the hose and head for any obstructions. Filter – always check your filters, if these are clogged this could be causing the vacuum cleaner to work harder and lose suction power.
The most common problems found in vacuum cleaners are low suction force, excessive noise, burning smell, vacuum not turn on, and overheating. These issues can be fixed by either cleaning the device or replacing some parts of the device. At times, it is best to seek a professional to fix the cleaner effectively.
The most common problem with a vacuum cleaner is also the easiest to remedy: clogs in the hose or attachments. Also the electrical cord, motor, switch, fan, brushes, and motor bearings can all need repair or replacement.
Besides getting jammed with dirt and debris, the major problem that cordless vacuums face is a weak battery or failing recharger. Some cordless vacuum batteries are easily replaced while others are not and require that the entire unit be replaced.
Start by completely disconnecting the spindle motor from all power sources. Check each wire, including T1, T2, T3 and the ground wire. If the reading is infinite, your motor should be fine. If you get a zero reading or any continuity reading, you have either a motor problem or a cable problem.
If you don`t vacuum your carpet, the dirt will break down carpet fibers and create a breeding ground for dust mites and bacteria. In addition, your home will begin to smell musty from the dirt, mites, and other organisms settling into the fibers.
The vacuum has a safety feature that turns off the vacuum when the vacuum gets to a certain high temperature or overheats. This happens because the vacuum has a motor protective thermostat. If the vacuum turns off due to overheating, the thermostat has to be reset before you can use it again.
Manifold vacuum, or engine vacuum in an internal combustion engine is the difference in air pressure between the engine`s intake manifold and Earth`s atmosphere. Manifold vacuum is an effect of a piston`s movement on the induction stroke and the choked flow through a throttle in the intake manifold of an engine.
The suction power is to be measured at the end of the tube of a complete vacuum cleaner (i.e. with tube, hose and filters β but without nozzle). Some manufacturers show the results from measurements made at the suction of the actual vacuum cleaner.
As a general rule, if the repair is going to cost less than half the cost of a new vacuum cleaner, it`s best to go ahead and get it repaired. When the service tops half the price of a new machine, it`s probably best to invest in a newer model.
If water invades the motor, you may have a completely failed vacuum cleaner. Again, not only will the water be inside your motor, but it will be carrying dirt and grime with it, making it unlikely (or at least very difficult) to restore the motor to a safe condition.
One of the first things to do when your Dyson vacuum cleaner keeps starting and stopping is to empty the bin. It may be full, or the machine may simply perceive it as too full to continue working. Dyson vacuum cleaners require constant airflow through them to work, and a full bin can stop this from happening.
The most common cause of motor failure, and arguably the most difficult to overcome, is low resistance. Low resistance is caused by the degradation of the insulation of the windings due to conditions such as overheating, corrosion, or physical damage.
A sudden increase in fuel consumption can point to a faulty engine. It could have other reasons as well but if you find the check engine light on and a drop in fuel economy its probably going to be an engine fault.
If there is a clog in the vacuum, you won`t have good suction and the vacuum won`t work. The clog can be in the vacuum head, the hose or where the hose meets the actual vacuum.
Vacuuming every day, or even a few times a day, is not going to create any long term problems. `But,` you might be thinking, `doesn`t the brushes spinning over the carpet on a beater bar wear it out? ` Sure, but a very small amount.
In a vacuum chamber, the pressure can be extremely low. So low, in fact, that water can actually boil at room temperature. So, if you put some water in a high-vacuum chamber you will see it boil.
All vacuum cleaners operate based on air flowing from the opening at the cleaning head or tool, through the vacuum cleaner and the bag and/or filter system and then out the exhaust port. This airflow is created by the vacuum motor, which also may be referred to as the suction motor.
Sweeping at night is bad luck
βIn ancient times, when there was no electricity, brooming at night with minimal lighting might also sweep away expensive items like rings, earrings, and chains out of the house,β he says.

On my old Royal the motor has stopped working

.On my old Royal the motor has stopped working
.Posted by dan621 on Apr 24, 2008
.Royal 2008Z Classic Bagged Upright Vacuum
.I have removed the two motor brushes from the side casing and wiped them off, and blown air in to where the bushes are inserted. I also removed the four screws and took off the little cover plate, where the power cord is spliced to feed power to the motor and the light. Where they are spliced, I verified that the power cord is good, with a volt meter. But the motor still doesn’t power up, as though there is no AC (even though I checked). I can turn the beater brush and the motor itself rotates (its not hung up or binding). What’s next? I want to get access to the motor itself so that I can vacuum out the inside of the motor. Any suggestions?

.Hello,
.I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure.
.Even though you took out the carbon brushes and blew them out – on the Royal and other vacuums you need to mark the way the carbon brushes go in and out with some type of line on the top of the carbons and if you put them in wrong they are not making a good contact with the armature, and if that is the problem you may have to replace the carbon brushes with new ones and make sure you mark them with some type of line on the time. Question? Did you vacuum run before you cleaned the carbon brushes? Also, you can remove the motor back cover by removing the 4 screws on the back of the fan housing and you can also check for a loose wire or connection, so If you need further assistance, please feel free to contact your local vacuum cleaner dealer in your area or in the yellow pages, or contact the factory phone number or website to further assist you with your questions.

I was just using my Bosch 1450W bagged vacuum and all of a sudden, the motor just shut down. No warning, no problems. The light still turns on, but the motor is unresponsive. There is a clean bag and filter, and nothing caught in the front roller. The motor sounded fine – no shaking, or weird frequency variations. There were no weird smells, just a little bit of heat, but nothing beyond normal. I’ve had this thing for several years, and never had a bit of trouble with it. Any suggestions
ANSWER : Many vacuums have internal thermal switches that need to cool to allow the vac to operate. After 30 minutes, check all 3 air filters and try again.

I pulled the side HEPA filter and could see a fine coating of graphite like dust. Took it to a vacuum repair shop. They said the brushes were going and thus the motor was shot. I liked the vacuum and bought a second, 1 year later the motor is making a slight noise that and removing the HEPA filter I find a slight metall
ANSWER : That dust is from the carbon brushes on the motor. You may need to check them, and also clean out the motor compartment. A slight noise could be a motor bearing starting to go. Does the smell like rubber or electrical. If rubber, then the belt has stretched and needs to replaced. If electrical, then something is causing the motor to run hot, like a clogged filter, or it could be a motor going bad.
