How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

Henry does a great job of cleaning up all that dust, dirt and pet hair, and given regular maintenance, he won`t leave any unpleasant odours. Keep your Henry smelling fresh by changing his bag and cleaning his filter regularly.
1, The accumulation of mould – mould grows in warm, damp places, so if you vacuum a wet carpet, these mould particles could collect in your vacuum cleaner bag. Failure to remove these mould particles will eventually lead to a bad smell emanating from the cleaner.
My Henry has been running for a long time and it has stopped working. Henry is fitted with a thermal cut out. If it has been running for an extended period of time, the overload will cut in and stop Henry from working until he has cooled down.
Overtime your hose may become blocked up with hair, pieces of food and other sizable items, leaving suction on the Hoover to deteriorate and unpleasant smells to appear. You can detach the hose and leave it to soak overnight in a mixture of baking soda and water to neutralise the smell and breakdown the blockages.
Your filter can very easily get blocked up with dirt and this can lead to nasty smells coming from the hoover. Luckily enough you can clean the filter or you can replace it if need be.
The air intake pipeline of the brush accessories may be clogged, or the roller accessory may be blocked due to dirt build-up. If you keep using your vacuum while these parts are not fully functioning, there may be an unpleasant burning smell coming from your appliance. Clean these parts and remove any dirt build-up.
Henry`s filter is clogged up – Henry vacuum cleaners have a pre motor filter which is washable. It`s a good idea to wash your filter every time you replace the bag. Simply wash it with warm water and replace the filter once it is completely dry.
According to a consumer report survey, the medium lifespan for a vacuum is 8 years.
That`s no surprise: according to manufacturer Numatic, every Henry is “designed, tested and engineered to last a whopping 25 years”.
Clean the vacuum

`Clean the dust bag, dust cup, and filter screen regularly and dry them thoroughly,` says Lorna. Joanne Archer at Expert Home Tips says the key to stopping a vacuum from smelling is to ensure you clean the filter regularly.

If your vacuum has a dust bin, remove it and wash it thoroughly with hot water, soap, and a bit of white vinegar or baking soda, Oh So Spotless suggests. Wash or replace the filter. If your vacuum has a washable filter, wipe around it and rinse the filter with cold water until the water is clear.
A common problem with Henry vacuum cleaners is the appliance running intermittently. If your hoover is cutting out when you move the cable where it attaches to the plug, then you`ll need to check the connections in the plug.
If your vacuum cleaner has lost suction power, it`s time to empty the container. Vacuum cleaners come with various foam or mesh filters. These might get clogged over time if not cleaned or replaced properly. This will cause your vacuum to lose suction.
Over time and extended use, a very fine layer of particles will start to line the inside of a vacuum bag, remaining in place even after the bag is emptied. This means that the bag will lose the proper airflow required to let the incoming air escape. As the airflow is restricted, the suction dies down too.
There`s no specific Henry hoover change-bag schedule you need to stick to. Just change the bag when it`s nearly full. If the suction is dropping and Henry`s having more trouble hoovering up messes than usual, it`s probably time to change the bag.
Numatic vacuums are ideal for use on site and in the workshop. Numatic hoovers, also knows as Henry hoovers, are lightweight and robust, so they can cope with tough cleaning tasks whilst still being portable.
Empty the vacuum cleaner, discard the contents in the outside trash and use an anti-bacterial wipe to clean the vacuum. Let it dry thoroughly. If your manufacturer says your vacuum cannister is washable, wash it out with warm, soapy water and then rinse it and let it dry.
If you`re smelling rubber, the belt has either burned out and snapped or the belt has become so stretched out that the roller is not moving and the vacuum belt is getting super heated from the motors RPM.
Henry`s face was invented to help keep cleaning staff company. It is believed that when Chris Duncan developed the Henry vacuum cleaner in 1970– the same man who runs the company today, he did so with the intention to prevent late night and early morning cleaning workers from feeling lonely.
HEPA, or high efficiency particulate air filters filter out particles as small as 0.3 microns and keep them from being released back into air by your vacuum cleaner`s exhaust. It`s good practice to change your vacuum cleaner`s HEPA filter every 6 months.
You can buy commercial carpet deodorizer powders, but you can also make a simple carpet powder at home with baking soda. This household item neutralizes odor, which can make your carpet smell better. You can use plain baking soda or stir in essential oil to add a pleasing scent.
The Numatic model (referred to as the NRV200) has a longer power cord – 12.5 metres, compared to domestic Henry`s 10 metre power cable. This allows the NRV200 to go further away from the plug – ideal in situations where a large area needs to be cleaned.

My numatic Hoover is brilliant but it smells what part needs changing? It’s not a burning smell, but a musky almost cabbage smell?
ANSWER : It could be the sponge filters or the dust partition that need replacing. But it might also be coming from the motor, best bet is to get it checked out.

Parts replacement We have a Hoover Steam Vac that has a broken part #10 in your picture or Part # 37271035. Does this part cover the whole top section of the Vac? Is it hard to replace? Where can you get the best prices on Hoover parts? I have been on Hoovers website and they don’t even recognize this Steam Vac. which is hard to believe they don’t even recognize their own unit? Thanks Ray

ANSWER : If the motor slowed down this would indicate a bad motor. not cost effective on this model to replace unless under warranty. it is not uncommon these days to see a motor go bad every now and then.

.What are the first 4 digits of your serial number? this would be the month and year of mfr. even without a receipt, a warranty service shop should be able to assist you.

Vorwerk ET 340 – been great but now noticing strong burning smell after vacuuming some hair from the bathroom. Bag is nearly empty. Gave it a rest then unscrewed the cover housing the motor and all looks clean (dust is sucked up the pipe and doesn’t appear to get near the motor). When I restarted it, burning smell still there. Are there any filters that might need changing? What could be causing the smell? Could the hair have gotten caught somewhere? Thanks.
ANSWER : Jessica,.
.Try changing the dirt bag..Check if the motor gets hot after operation. You can come to check it by touching outside the motor housing. If it is hot or just warm..Is the smell of burning hair or something else? May be rubber or plastic???.Please check and confirm.

I need to change the motor in a vax 6131 but i don’t know how to get into it to get the change it?
I also need to get into the motor assembly housing to change a part but can’t see how it comes apart!!
ANSWER : On the handle there is one small pozidrive screw, remove and orange panel comes away revealing powercable securing bar. Remove 2 screws and this reveals a 10mm headed bolt. Under label on top of handle there is another small pozzi screw, undo this and the handle cover can be removed revealing the other 10mm bolt which needs to be removed. The upper orange cowl can now be eased upwards and if you note where the 2 switches are located, they can be eased from the handle area by depressing the switch locating clips. This allows the upper cover to be put to one side with the power cable still threaded through. DO NOT REMOVE any of the connectors from the connections otherwise you might need a competent electrician to help you. At this point there are 3 similar 10mm bolts which, when removed, allow the bottom black plastic ‘ring’ to be removed from the orange plastic with the motor attached. You then should be able to replace the required..—————————————–.—————————–.To disassemble a  vax you first remove 2 screws holding the handle cover. One is just above where the power flex enters the handle, the other is at the mid-point of the top, hidden under the label. Both are small crosshead screws. Before doing attempting this, you need to be competent with working on mains electric wiring, as some of this has to be removed to do all this.

Once the handle covers are removed, the next bit is to gently lever off the speed control knob – it’s a tight friction fit, then undo the nut holding it to the handle cover panel. After this undo the mains power connections from the multi-block joiner they go into then remove the 2 screws securing the mains wire. Then undo 2 bolts at each end of the handle going downwards into the main body. At this point the handle can be removed as well as the top body plate. You have to fiddle the electrics and switches through the hole in the top body plate to remove it. Now 3 bolts and a small crosshead screw is all that holds the upper motor section to the lower. Remove these and you can separate the 2 halves which gives you acess to the water pump. This is held in by screws founf underneath the plastic ring at the base of the motor body (around where the small reound blue sponge filter goes). This ring is held in by plastic springy clips. Gently lever round it to get it come off.

Motor is sparking and smells like burning rubber. When it first happened I thought the vacuum had something jamming the beater bar. That was the smell it had, like when the belt gets burned. But when we turned it over, it wasn’t jamming. Took off the base plate and turned it on. The motor area is sparking and it makes a weird noise (I assume that is because the motor fails and restarts). I looked for loose wires, can’t find any. I believe I need some sort of part replaced, maybe even a n

Burning Smell Hi, I have a Rainbow E series that when I run the vacuum there is a burning smell. I have cleaned the entire unit and filter but still have the smell? I am afraid that the motor will burn out?
ANSWER : Check the carbon motor brushes, there might be arcing on the armature. New brushes may help if the armature is ok.

Hello can you help me please?
I have a Kirby G4 vacuum cleaner, It did work ok until it started to give off burning smell and lots of sparks from the brushes. I have changed these brushes, the motor still rotates but it still gives off sparks and burning smell. Do i have to change the motor as well?
Can you help please?
Thankyou

Martin

ANSWER : Some debris, even sand or dirt, probably got into the motor, causing damage to the armature. If this is the case, you will need to replace the motor. The burning smell from the motor is generally a sure sign of a bad motor.
