How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

First, check to make sure the clean tank has water and/or the water & formula mixture in the tank. If your tank is empty, this could be the reason your machine is not spraying. You will need to fill your clean tank again. Reseat the tank and ensure it sits snug on the machine.
A possible cause might be that the tank is not properly seated. To assure the tank is seated properly, pick it up and re-seat is so it sits snugly on the unit. If this doesn`t fix the problem, make sure the tank is assembled properly. To make sure they are both latched properly, pick the tank up by its handle.
The ProHeat® Carpet Cleaner has a built-in heater to heat tap water up to 25 degrees hotter for optimum cleaning.
A: BISSELL ProHeat 2X models all feature a patented built-in heater which will heat the hot tap water you put in up to 25 degrees hotter to safely optimize cleaning effectiveness. The heater will never allow the temperature to exceed 190 degrees.
Fill clean water tank with warm tap water. This machine uses HeatWave Technology™ which helps maintain consistent water temperature throughout the cleaning process by redirecting the heat of the motor to help maintain the temperature of the water.
Make sure the Clean Water Tank is seated correctly on the machine. If it isn`t, turn off and unplug your machine, remove and reseat the tank until it clicks into place. This is also a good time to check for cracks or leaks in the tank. If it`s damaged, a replacement can be ordered on BISSELL.com.
The BISSELL ProHeat® and ProHeat 2X® series feature built-in heaters that heat hot tap water up to 25 degrees hotter for maximum cleaning effectiveness.
Just empty the water out of the tank after each use. Doing so will prevent leaking and extend the life of your filter.
Description. With twelve rows of cleaning bristles instead of the four to six on most of the other Bissell Steam Cleaners, the ProHeat 2X Healthy Home Deep Cleaning Steam Cleaner is unlike most other steamers.
Bissell Proheat Deep Cleaner

It features a patented hot water heater that provides maximum steam cleaning effectiveness via continuously heated cleaning action. The unit`s 12 amp cleaning system is quite powerful, removing tough and ground in dirt and stains from carpeting, upholstery, and other fabrics.

BISSELL steam cleaners, like PowerFresh® Deluxe can heat up in as little as 30 seconds and only require you to fill up the tank with water (there`s no formula to mix)! *Using the microfiber pad on hard floors, use as instructed.
Lift the tank straight up. Unscrew the cap. Decide if you`re cleaning hard floors or carpet, and fill with hot tap water to the appropriate water fill line. Then fill with the proper BISSELL formula to the appropriate formula fill line.
Additionally, the ProHeat 2X® Revolution® Pet Pro Plus carpet cleaner comes with 3 different cleaning modes; MAX Clean Mode to remove embedded dirt, stains and allergens, Deep Clean Mode for tough stains and spills, and Express Clean Mode to dry your carpets in about 30 minutes.
Check to see if your clean water tank is empty. The clean water tank also may not be seated properly. The brush window could also not be latched into place. Turn off your machine and check to see if the brush window is secure.
Check to see if the collection water tank outside the bladder is full. The float will activate to cut off suction. Empty the collection tank and test for suction. If there is still no suction at this time, please visit a BISSELL Authorized Service Center.

My Pro heat 2x by Bissell does not put out or **** up water Brand is Bissell. Model is 8920 12 amp
ANSWER : Please check the following with liquid in both tanks.
.

.

– Check to see if the machine will spray through the hose with the setting on tools. If it does, the pump is fine. Continue troubleshooting.
.

Check for debris on spray tips. Clean them with a soft brush (on old tooth brush works well). The spray tips may be lifted out for easier access.
.

– Ensure the tank lid is properly attached to the bottom of the tank. To attach this properly, remove the Water Tank from the machine. Hook the front window onto the lip of the bottom container and then allow the window with lid to cover the complete tank. Secure the latch on the back of the bottom tank to the back of the tank lid. THE TANK LID CANNOT BE ATTACHED PROPERLY IF THE BOTTOM TANK IS ALREADY INSTALLED IN THE MACHINE.
– Check the bottom of the Water Tank and the Formula Tank to make sure each has a red auto-load gasket attached. Make sure the Water Tank and the Formula Tank are seated properly. Depress the x on this gasket to ensure this depresses and release back out. Liquid from the tank should dispense.
.

– Remove the handle completely and re-attach. Once the handle is re-attached, re-attempt to spray.
.

.

If the machine continues to not spray, check the following:
.

REMOVE THE COLLECTION TANK:
• Make sure the unit is set to water rinse
• Remove the smart mix bottle and fill it with water only
• Place the smart mix bottle into the collection tank reservoir
• Run the unit and try to spray. If the machine sprays, you will be able to see the water level decreasing in the smart mix bottle and you will need to replace the bottom tank. It is possibly warped.

I have a Bissell Pro 2x carpet cleaner. The water heats properly as well as spraying the cleaning product. However, when I go to suction the water from the carpets, the 2 in 1 water tank bladder works properly but there is no dirty water outside the bladder. I have only used this carpet cleaner ~ 5 times and in the beginning I had to empty the suctioned water quite frequently as it was dirty and it could not not hold any more water. So I have done 1 room and all the dirt remains in the carpet
ANSWER : Check that the suction cone is not blocked. Check that the filter or hose to the bladder isn’t blocked as well.

My Bissell Pro Heat Select 2X does not pull up the dirt from the carpet into the water. The water just slowly disappears. The first time I used it the water got really dirty. The very next time I used it it worked differently and the water just disappeared until it was all gone. I’ve only used it a couple times and I don’t see where it is working. Has anyone else had this problem?
ANSWER : Inside the plastic suction lid is a little red plastic filter that has to be cleaned out every time you use it because it sounds like your vaccum is not picking up all the hair and debri before you clean the carpet causing the water to be injected into the carpet and disappearing and not filling the tank with dirty water. Bissell Proheat 2x Not Putting Out Water
I have a Bissell Proheat Select Pet 2X that extracts fine, but WILL NOTX put out the water / solution to be extracted. What to do ? Thank you for your time and consideration ~ Tamara / Email:[email protected]
ANSWER : The water sprayers on your Bissell are probably clogged. I had this problem this morning, myself, with my machine, about 15 months old. They get clogged up with mineral deposits. This is a *fairly* easy thing to fix yourself. Read all the way to the end before trying this fix. My Bissell model is different than yours, but many are similar.
.
.Unplug the Bissell. Remove the water container pieces from the top of the base. You’ll probably reveal two red plastic pieces mounted in the Bissell’s base, about .75″ x .75″. These spray water on your brushes when you press the water-and-soap trigger at the top of the Bissell’s handle. These water sprayers tend to clog. See the metal spring running up the hose, behind each red water sprayer? As you squeeze the red plastic sides of one red water sprayer, use a screwdriver or other tool under the spring to wedge up the hose, to release the sprayer from its mount in the base. Stick a finger in the hole of the base of the Bissell where the sprayer was mounted and run it around the edges there including on the underside of the base to clean out any gunk you can find. Clean any gunk you can off the red water sprayer with an old toothbrush.
.
.Now you need to remove the water sprayer from the hose. You need a pair of pliers. Use the pliers to squeeze the brass colored clip that is keeping the red water sprayed mounted to the end of the small hose there. Move the clip down the hose so it compresses the spring and is no longer on the red plastic water sprayer. Now you can twist and pull the red water sprayer out of the end of the hose. You’ll need a little hand strength to do this. Just be careful not to break the water sprayer by using a tool. They’re not particularly delicate, but breaking one would render your Bissell useless until it was replaced, so use a little care.
.
.When you’ve removed a red water sprayer from the hose, put the outer end of the red water sprayer in your mouth and seal your lips around it, and try blowing through it. You can’t blow air through it, right? It’s clogged. Open up a paper clip and push it back-and-forth through the small hole in the end of the water sprayer back towards its middle. You’ll probably push out a line of white mineral deposits. Clean them off the water sprayer with the old toothbrush, and try blowing through the water sprayer again. If air passes through clearly, you’ve fixed it. Now you have to put it back together. Push the water sprayer back on the end of the hose. Use the pliers to reposition the brass clip on the end of the hose over the water sprayer. Push the red water sprayer back into position in the base of the Bissell.
.
.Now do the same for the other red water sprayer.
.
.I had a problem when I fixed this on mine this morning, because when I pulled one water sprayer off, the hose advanced up under the spring and I couldn’t reattach the red water sprayer, because it couldn’t reach the end of the hose. So try to use the brass clip or some other means (rubber band, tape, another clip) to keep the hose from crawling up inside the spring after you pull the red water sprayer off the hose. If the hose gets up under the spring anyway, despite your best efforts, I fixed this by removing the six screws on top of the Bissell base (the surface of which the water tank mounts on top of), and then pried it up. You can pull out the hose, reattach the red water sprayers to the hoses, position the hose *very carefully* inside the base (there are mounts under there they need to fit into, so you don’t break anything), push the red water sprayers through the mount holes and mount them, and then reattach the screws to the base.
.
.There’s something else you may need to do that can help get the water flowing. This one’s easier. The Bissell uses pumps, which need to be primed. Sometimes an air pocket inside the machine keeps water from flowing. To prime the pumps, separate the two water tank pieces. Fill the base as usual and mount it on the Bissell without the top water tank piece. Plug the Bissell in and **turn it on**. (The Bissell must be running to do this.) Kneeling on the floor in front of the Bissell, reach up and press the soap and water release trigger at the top of the Bissell’s handle and hold it in as if you wanted water to go through. On top of the water tank is a plastic grommet hole about 1 inch in diameter, through which you pour water to fill the tank. Seal that hole with the flat of your hand. You’ll feel a bit of suction. Lift your hand up and down a few times. Release the trigger and repeat a few times. Now that you’ve cleaned out your water sprayers and primed the Bissell’s internal pumps, I’m hoping water will GUSH through your Bissell once again.
.
.As you probably have learned the hard way, as I did, it’s VERY important to do a lot of cleaning of the Bissell after each use, more than the manual tells you to do. Clean the bottom of the unit. Empty all the water. Thoroughly rinse out both water container pieces. Unscrew the three clear plastic pieces, one in front, two on the sides, that surround the brushes, and rinse them thoroughly in water. Clean off the brushes and all the lint and gunk around and above the brushes. (A water spray bottle and toothbrush are helpful here.) Tip the machine and blow all the water out of the hole in the base. Release the red clip springs on the red water sprayers and blow on them. Doing this will slow the failure of the Bissell. It’s a great little machine for the money, but it does have a learning curve and need more pampering than a vacuum cleaner, doesn’t it??
.
.Good luck!

I have a bissell quickwash 1950-e. I bought it Jan. 2006, and have only used it 8-10 times, I live in a very hard water area, so I though if I put some vinegar in with the cleaning solution it would get rid of any hard water deposits, unfortunatly the solution went lumpy in the tank and stoped spraying out water, I have opened it, hose clean, sprayer not blocked, x at bottom of water container when depresed water trickles out, component that opens the x when water container placed, also ran wate
ANSWER : Hard to say what is causing your problem, replacing the cap and insert on the water tank may help, part #2041111, even tho it may trickle out water when depressed, they can still be bad. The other thing would be the rod not relesing the water like it should. The big draw back to this model is Bissell has obsoleted all of its parts and most are no longer available. Might be wiser to buy new.

My Bissell Pro-Heat 2x 12 amps
Model 9200-2
The rollers wont turn and the water wont release
ANSWER : WON’T SPRAY ???

We have a Bissell Proheat 2X (model 8920). The problem we are having is when water/soap is initially released (all settings) it continues to leak out the front water spray nozzles unit the water containers are empty. The vacuum works but can’t keep up with the continuous water leaking out. Do you have any idea what is sticking open to allow the continued release of water when the machine is running? Thanks Rick
ANSWER : Return it. It is faulty and should not do that. Mine does not. Does require changing water about evrery 10 minutes but one can see the filth in the water. Also re-clean with plain water over areas that were cleaned to remove all cleaner. Old cleaner in carpet to dirt is like a bug attracted to a bug zapper. It can be time consuming, but it will pay for itself and can do a great job if you pay attention when water or cleaner runs out, otherwise it will not clean properly!
