If the motor filter (located below the bag) is dirty, hand wash with soapy water. Rinse with clear water, squeeze out excess water, and allow it to dry completely before returning it to the vacuum. Insert a new dust bag and close the cover.
The better the filtration, the fewer allergens escape back into your home. Bagged vacuums often have HEPA-rated bags, replaceable exhaust filters or both. Bagless canisters usually have permanent, washable filters, some with HEPA ratings.
This washable filter (part number KC38KCEN1000) is for vacuums. When you use a vacuum cleaner without a HEPA filter, these particles are stirred up and put back out into the air through your vacuum`s exhaust. Regular filters can`t remove these harmful particulates and this puts the people in your home at risk.
HEPA filters are not designed to be washed and reused. Doing so will cause damage to the fibers which makes the filter ineffective and it will become void of its job. Once a filter has reached the maximum capacity of harmful particles, it will need to be replaced with a fresh, new one.
How long do Kenmore vacuums last? A. It`s suggested that the typical vacuum can last up to an average of eight years. With proper maintenance, a Kenmore vacuum could last that long or longer.
Most manufacturers recommend you change your filter on average every 3-6 months. However, it is recommended to change your filter even earlier depending on usage and allergy care.
HEPA, or high efficiency particulate air filters filter out particles as small as 0.3 microns and keep them from being released back into air by your vacuum cleaner`s exhaust. It`s good practice to change your vacuum cleaner`s HEPA filter every 6 months.

Unbeknownst to me, someone took the bag out of my Kenmore Progressive vacuum and failed to replace it. I have been vacuuming without a bag for months, and today the vacuum stopped sucking. When I opened up the front to replace the bag, tons of dirt and dust came pouring out. I thoroughly cleaned the vacuum, put in a new bag, but still no sucking power. Just dust coming from the rear vents where one of the filters is. Is the vacuum ruined, or is it a simple solution of buying a new filter?
ANSWER : Sounds like you need to buy a new motor. All that grit and dust will ruin a motor and I’m surprised it lasted as long as it did.

I had the vacuum cleaner question about the canister and the wand/powerhead… the Kenmore Progressive Vacuum canister model 116.25812 and the canister not powering off without unplugging the vacuum. The solution I received that they both run on their own switch so it is normal makes sense. However, is there a power switch on the canister anywhere? The only way for the canister to be turned off is by unplugging it. Any ideas? One would think there would be a switch. I am new to fixya and hope
ANSWER : Hi. On some models, one switch controls all of the power. Your issue, which is no working switch is almost certainly a blown triac on the circuit board in the canister – kenmore part number KC86WBZRZ000

The original belt on my upright Kenmore Progressive broke and I replaced it with the spare that was in the vacuum. The vacuum and spare belt are about 10 years old. Then the spare broke after one vacuuming session and there was a burning smell coming from the vacuum. I ordered new belts and replaced it with the new belt. Dirt devil vacuum cleaner–trouble vacuuming dirt and pet hair on carpeting –is the problem with the spinning brush which contacts the floor, not contacting the carpeting?? I thought (when I bought this vacuum) that the aforementioned brush was adjustable to various heights of carpeting. ANSWER : Try replacing the belt. Rubber belts stretch out after about a year.

Typically the top filter of which is the sponge is washable but the HEPA filter is not, it can be brushed off and vacuum off with another vacuum, but the best filtration is to replace the HEPA filter and to wash the sponge filter, if the sponge filter get to bad then replace the sponge filter as well. Part # KC86WBZR3000…Cost is $6.99. I would remove and inspect for burnt components, or broken wires…Then clean connections both male/female using an eraser, toothbrush and alcohol…Using a bright light and a magnifying glass inspect solder joints for “bridges” or cold joints. If you detect a problem during this procedure (to the exclusion of burnt components) fix, reassemble, and test. If problem still persist: Order a new part.

ANSWER : Sounds like a motor err. Could be repaired by a professional but it never be as good as a new one. Also they you might not find anyone to repair it because the replacement motor might cost more than a new vacuum /considering it’s age the motor will be hard to find and that makes it more expensive to repair./
I suggest you to buy a new vacuum.
