How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

Although Hoover of course recommend their own detergent, we are using a 50/50 mixture of white vinegar and water, with a few drops of essential oil (tea tree oil) in it to improve the fragrance. This has worked well for us and is very inexpensive.
Upholstered Surfaces

Use the upholstery attachment on mattresses and fabric surfaces. Work in a horizontal or vertical motion from top to bottom. Use the crevice tool in the tight corners and seams. Use the dust brush on leather furniture to reduce any risk of scratching.

Carpet cleaners use a combination of clean solution, powerful scrubbing brushes and vacuum suction. Carpet cleaners inject a mixture of cleaning solution and water deep into your carpet fibres. Brushes then agitate, scrub and loosen the dirt and/or stain and then the powerful vacuum suction lifts it away.

You will want to follow the machine directions. So if it has a fill line or formula cup you would use that. Otherwise we suggest using 6 oz of carpet shampoo to a gallon of water. How much product you need depends on how much liquid the machine disperses, how many times the carpet needs to be cleaned, etc.

This attachment is wide and sometimes has a lint-catching fabric strip perfect for coaxing dust from sofas, chairs, mattresses, and cushions.

How Steam Cleaners Work. Water is heated past the boiling point and forced out as pressurized steam through a nozzle, brush, or other attachment. The vapor loosens dirt and kills dust mites, mold, staph, and other allergens and harmful bacteria. No suction is required, since the high-heat moisture dries quickly.

Steam washing machines use a combination of water and steam to boost the temperature inside the drum. This causes fibers to relax and therefore absorb water more efficiently.

Turbine Hi I found out through your site that my turbin is bad on my steam vac and I found some information as well on how to disasemble the steam vac to get to the turbine but still was wondering if there were some more detailed instructions on how to remove the turbin. I am a sigle mom and doing the work on the steam vac myself and need a little more detailed instructions. Please help asap and have a bless day.
ANSWER : There are some screws on the bottom that have to come out so you can remove the top housing. Take the brush block out, there are 2 screws above where it sits. The turbine sits near the front, and in the mid section, 2 screws on the front of it and 2 long screws from underneath, if you already haven’t removed them. Unhook the hoses to it thenpick it out and replace with the new one. ( Some models near the back of the housing, is a catch on each side that you have to unhook to release the top).

I do not have my users manual and have never vacuumed wet with this vacuum. How do I change it from a dry to wet vacuum.
Can’t find my manual and I need to use the shop vac for water in basement, do I have to change the filter or what
lost my user manual never used it to pick up water. need to know how to puit it in wet mode i want to clean the dirty water out of my pool.
ANSWER : .Vacuuming Liquids
.1. When picking up small amounts of liquid
.the filter may be left in place.
.2. When picking up large amounts of liquid
.we recommend that the filter be
.removed. If the filter is not removed, it
.will become saturated and misting
.may appear in the exhaust.
.3. After using the vac to pick up liquids,
.the filter must be dried to reduce the
.risk of possible mildew and damage to
.the filter.
.4. When the liquid in the drum reaches a
.predetermined level, the float mechanism
.will rise automatically to cut off
.airflow. When this happens, turn off
.the vac, unplug the power cord, and
.empty the drum. You will know that the
.float has risen because vac airflow
.ceases and the motor noise will
.become higher in pitch, due to
.increased motor speed.
.IMPORTANT: To reduce the risk of damage
.to the vac do not run motor with float
.in raised position

Hoover u5781-900, motor shuts off (intermittent)when you shake vac or make jerky movements. If you move vac to up right position the vac starts right up.When you giggle vac, motor starts and stops no mater if you just started up or vac for ran for 45 min. Thanks Lucy C.

Beater brushes not turning on the wife’s Hoover Steam Vac model F5905-900. Found one prior ”solution” stating that it sounded like the belt was bad. That was my original thought, but on checking schematics and trying to find part numbers at Sears Parts Direct and at Hoover, it does not appear the F5905-900 steam vac HAS any belts to begin with. What’s next??
ANSWER : This one I can tell you about from personal experience with that generation Hoover Steam Vac. After using it about 7 or 8 times my brushes stopped turning also.

I disassembled it (kind of like disassembling a Chinese puzzle box) and found that the Turbine which develops the torque for the brushes simply has worn out. I replaced the part and it works fine now. Unfortunately unless you are familiar with that sort of repair it’s high on the difficulty side. When I took it to a local shop they wanted about $150 to repair it. That was more than half the price I paid for it. It’s simply not a very good design. Hoover wont’ talk about them yet they are still selling them.

The least expensive place to purchase a replacement part is at: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250648382497&rvr_id=&crlp=1_263602_263622&UA=%3F*F%3F&GUID=70355e091290a0aad3175ab7ff9f985a&itemid=250648382497&ff4=263602_263622.

The repair shop wanted to charge me $60 for the part.

It seems that the manufacturer is ignoring the problem and it’s a great claim for a class action suit against them.

Zashiban
