How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

Depending on the vacuum model, this repair can take between 10 and 30 minutes to complete. Power cord replacement is a basic repair for all sorts of machines and tools, and removing the old cord is always the first step.
If only the plug prongs are bent or snapped, start by replacing the plug. If the cord itself is frayed or has exposed wiring, you`ll need to replace the entire electrical cord. Replacing only the plug could leave you open to electrical shock.
It`s also important to pay attention to the vacuum cords. Tishko recommends checking them daily. Replacing a cord might cost $85 in labor and up to $130 for the new part.

WindTunnel technology and Multi-Cyclonic filtration lifts and removes surface debris and deep down embedded dirt with no loss of suction. The 25ft. power cord automatically retracts in seconds so you never have to wrap a cord again.

This usually occurs if the dust cannister is too full or the filters are clogged and the motor wasn`t getting enough cooling air passing over it.
And an extension cord with a retractable reel takes almost all of the cord headache out of the vacuuming equation. To use one, find as central of a location as you can, preferably in a spot that won`t cause you to wind around too much furniture, plug in your extension cord, and plug your vacuum cleaner into that.
When a power cord is damaged, the appliance should be removed from service and the cord replaced as soon as possible to reduce the risk of electrical shock, electrocution or fire. Cord damage can also result when the cord is pinched, caught between or punctured by heavy objects such as legs on a desk.
Over time, spark plugs and wires can become worn or brittle, which can cause damage and prevent the engine from running properly. Replacing your spark plugs and wires simultaneously can help prevent cross-contamination and ensure that both parts are working properly.
The green wire is the ground wire, the white wire is the neutral wire, and the black wire is the hot wire. Light-duty interior extension cords often lack the ground wire, but if a ground wire is present, be sure to connect it.
Regardless if a cord is damaged by age, heavy use, pinching, or bearing too much weight (when an appliance is hung by its cord), a damaged cord increases the risk of electrical shock, fire, or electrocution, and should NOT be used. “The electric cord on your appliance contains a live wire that is securely insulated.
Simply put, power cords that fail, no matter what the reason, are safety hazards, damaging appliances and causing fires. So, once again, the “when to replace it” answer is every 5 years.
As a general rule, if the repair is going to cost less than half the cost of a new vacuum cleaner, it`s best to go ahead and get it repaired. When the service tops half the price of a new machine, it`s probably best to invest in a newer model.
The electrical wire must have the proper number of conductors. In modern electrical circuits used to wire receptacles (electrical outlets). Typically an electrical receptacle is wired with two insulated wires and a bare ground wire, all three of which are encased in a plastic (NMC) or metal (BX) jacket.
The plug contains three wires – the live, neutral and earth wires. In a plug, the live wire (brown) and the neutral wire (blue) are the two wires that form the complete circuit with a household appliance. The earth wire (green and yellow) does not normally form part of the circuit and is included as a safety wire.
A plug connects a device to the mains electricity supply. The cable between the device and the three-pin plug contains three copper wires that are coated with plastic. copper wires are good conductors; plastic is a good insulator.
The problem may lie in your vacuum cleaner`s adapter, charging dock, or battery and the electrical outlet. Try plugging your vacuum cleaner in to another outlet. If it is now working, the problem was in the first outlet that you have used. You should contact a certified electrician if you need to fix that outlet.
If this appliance also appears to have no power, there is possibly a problem with the supply at that socket. Check the socket is switched on and that there is not an isolator switch somewhere in your home which may be switched off or tripped out. If there is an isolator or fuse box, check it is also switched on.

Checks will need to be carried out on the wiring to the door lock and the door switch. There may be issues with the water supply via the water fill pipe that many have become kinked or crushed during installation. The water inlet valve may also be the culprit.

Occasional use cords are very lightweight, light gauge 16-gauge extension cords. They`re suitable for light duty indoor applications, like running holiday lights, portable fans, your electric hedge trimmers, or your vacuum cleaner.
The 16 gauge cord is the perfect weight and durability for extended use.
The Power Take Off (PTO) feature is a plug socket, usually found on the front or top of the wet and dry vacuum cleaner, that synchronises the operation of the vacuum cleaner with your power tool. So, when you switch on the power tool you are using, the vacuum will automatically switch on too.

ANSWER : Without seeing this it would be difficult to describe. I would take it to a vac shop and let him show you. there are no real schematics for the wiring of these units. I usually would cut off the cable with a few inches of insulation to know where to install the new one and reuse the old terminals if needed.

How to replace power cord on Hoover WindTunnel upright vacuum
ANSWER : The aforementioned solutions probably never even attempted this fix on this model. The handle does NOT need to come off. but the 5 screws on the front housing DO: 2 above the light and 3 below it. Then to get the colored housing off you need to access 2 screws on the underside that are beneath the agitator roller. To do that, obviously the 4 screws holding the bottom plate need to come off too. Here’s a link to a schematic that might help as you attempt to do this, (assuming that you still do!) http://www.elkypro.com/hoops2005/vacuum_parts/hoover/U5461-900.html

Once you have the main body housing cover off, then you can access the 2 screws atop of each trunnion cover that holds the motor assembly cover halves together. If you’ve made it this far, then gently pry apart the motor halves keeping even as yo do. Now you can see all the wiring necessary to cut and splice. Happy cord replacing! As for me, I am headed for the store, as I am not so sure I can remember how to get the darn thing put back together. But it was fun taking it apart!

Repplacing power cord on Hoover Wind tunnel (not self propelled)
ANSWER : I am thinking that the cord goes in on the back, just below the handle. Remove the handle, then from the front, remove the tool holder(#8), then you can get to where the cord comes in and hooks up.

Cord replacement I need to replace a damaged cord (the reel works). How do I get the top off so I can remove the back end? Once I get it off, will I be able to change the cord, or do I need to buy the whole reel assembly? (and thanks for the help – I love this site!)
ANSWER : You will probably have to replace the whole reel cord. Depending on your model, on each side, there is a bar in the middle that will slide off, then the 2 halfs will come apart. They will only slide in one direction. If an older model, there are screw on the top to remove the top panel, then remove the 2 screws on the bottom and the reel cord (which is the back end of the vac)will come off. Pay attention to where the wires go so you don’t hook them up wrong.
