Vacuums\015 Repair Kit for Edwards E2M5 vacuum pump does not give detailed instructions to ”overhaul” pump. (http://www.capvac.com/store/item.aspx?departmentid=210&ItemId=86) Brief and useless instructions were… ”replace numbered parts from kit using exploded diagram view.” No details of clearance, fastener torque, alignment, etc. I was unable to locate detailed overhaul instructions using Google, ASK or BING. Will go ahead in next few days with repair. If repair fails, will return for costly over-haul.\015

How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

Although you should leave some vacuum pump repair to an expert, there are things you can do to diagnose and fix faults in the equipment. A vacuum pump repair facility may offer services to train you internal maintenance men to do various levels of pump repairs.
The Main Parts Of A Vacuum Pump

We have the electrical motor on the back, the compressor at the front, a handle on top and a support base on the bottom. We then have an inlet which connects to the system to remove the air from the system and we also have the exhaust to disperse this to atmosphere.

We have two possible ways of adjusting the pressure in a vacuum system: first, by changing the pumping speed (altering the speed of the pump or throttling by closing a valve); second, through admission of gas (opening a valve).
The most common cause of vacuum pump failure occurs due to broken belts, electrical problems inside the unit, or vacuum hoses that fail.
Remove the OIL FILL cap, and fill the reservoir with new vacuum pump oil until the oil just shows at the bottom of the sight glass. The approximate oil capacity of the pump is 15 ounces.
If your vacuum is fairly new and this is the first time you`re experiencing a problem, repairs are probably the best option. In fact, your vacuum may still be covered under warranty. However, if you`ve had to pay for multiple repairs and you`ve had the appliance for many years, it might be time for a new one.
Vacuum pump exhaust filters prevent small particles and contaminants from getting expelled into the atmosphere. These filters are installed at the outlet of the vacuum pump and help reduce exhaust noise.
There are two basic categories of vacuum pump: Gas Transfer Pumps and entrapment or capture pumps (Figure 1).
The equation for determining how much of a suction lift you can pull with your pump you can take your Atmospheric pressure(Pb) subtract your Pump NPSHR, Vapor Pressure (Vp), friction losses (hf) and NPSH Margin (Safety factor) and you will have your maximum suction lift.
A pump maintenance programme would generally involve a periodic check of the pump performance, an inspection of the wearing parts and lubrication of bearings and joints. It is good practice to carry out a visual inspection of the pump installation on a daily basis.
Fixed-Time Maintenance (FTM) is an approach to preventive maintenance that involves scheduling regular, predetermined maintenance tasks at fixed time intervals. This can be a useful strategy for businesses that want to ensure their equipment is always in top condition and avoid any unexpected downtime.
A vacuum pump is a piece of equipment that draws air and other gas molecules in from one sealed chamber to the next by changing high and low-pressure states. As molecules are continuously removed, it becomes more difficult to remove additional ones, which increases the power of the vacuum.
Vacuum uses the surrounding atmosphere to create work force by pulling on, rather than pushing, a work piece. Evacuating air from a closed volume develops a pressure differential between the volume and the surrounding atmosphere.
By using vacuum we reduce the vapor pressure of the water so that it boils, or turns to a gas, at a much lower temperature than if was at atmosphere. This is very helpful at removing moisture quickly from hydraulic, lubricating, transformer and other types of industrial oils.

Dirt devil vacuum cleaner–trouble vacuuming dirt and pet hair on carpeting –is the problem with the spinning brush which contacts the floor,  not contacting the carpeting??  I thought (when I bought this vacuum) that the aforementioned brush was adjustable to various heights of carpeting.  Sometimes, it seems like nothing is being vacuumed up –unless I have just put a new bag on the vacuum… Do I need or can I replace the spinning brush on the bottom of the vacuum so it kicks up and vacuums

I purchased a brand new Eureka Pet vacuum, sorry don’t know exact name but it the one that has the self cleaning duster on it. Last night I used the vacuum on my carpet, it was working fine until I accidently sucked up the corner of a scarf that was hanging off a couch. I shut the vacuum off, pulled out the scarf and and resumed vacuuming. Much to my dismay the suction on the vacuum had ceased. Can you tell me if there is a reset button on the vacuum? The vacuum does not appear to be damage
ANSWER : If the motor is running, there should be suction. Possible problems depend on whether it’s a canister or upright and are:
.A clog in the hose, UR or canister. Detach hose. Drop small coin in one end and lift hose causing it to roll out the other. If it does, no clog in hose. Drop same coin into hose opening on power head. If it rolls out, no clog in PN.
.Broken fan blades, UR. Needs to be taken to shop for repair/replacement.
.
.A reset button is for use if the motor isn’t running, so won’t have anything to do with the suction.

Hello, I have an Electrolux vacuum. In desperation, I vacuumed up some water and my machine stopped. I am hesitant to take the machine to a repair place for fear that if it is a simple repair they will not be honest. Can anyone give me advice on whether this is a problem that requires a new motor or major repair? Thank you!
ANSWER : Although it’s never to be recommended, it is sometimes possible to vacuum up a little water without doing significant damage. However, the fact that your machine then stopped suggests that the electrics got wet. That may or may not have caused expensive damage (probably not), but it is essential that the machine be thoroughly dried out before further attempts to use it. That will involve dismantling it, and my guess is that the labour involved will be the most costly part of the job. A competent vacuum engineer should be able to complete the job in about an hour..
.Good luck! Please remember to rate this response – thank you.

Unbeknownst to me, someone took the bag out of my Kenmore Progressive vacuum and failed to replace it. I have been vacuuming without a bag for months, and today the vacuum stopped sucking. When I opened up the front to replace the bag, tons of dirt and dust came pouring out. I thoroughly cleaned the vacuum, put in a new bag, but still no sucking power. Just dust coming from the rear vents where one of the filters is. Is the vacuum ruined, or is it a simple solution of buying a new filter?
ANSWER : Sounds like you need to buy a new motor. All that grit and dust will ruin a motor and I’m surprised it lasted as long as it did.
.This is where a vacuum that won’t run without a bag would have been nice. (Aerus for one)

The original belt on my upright Kenmore Progressive broke and I replaced it with the spare that was in the vacuum. The vacuum and spare belt are about 10 years old. Then the spare broke after one vacuuming session and there was a burning smell coming from the vacuum. I ordered new belts and replaced it with the new belt. It seems to be working fine with no smell. I checked the belt after I vacuumed the family room and although it was in tact, the belt was very hot. Is that normal? Should t
ANSWER : The belt heats up due to the friction, as well as being in contact with the shaft of a hot motor. It is normal.

Electrolux Epic 6500SR Full Bag sensor working, Does not Reset properly
ANSWER : The problem was a sticking switch that was not being reset. The vacuum on/off switch mechanism is comprised of two switches. One is the main switch that turns the vacuum on and off. The second is a shut off switch that gets tripped when the full bag sensor is engaged. This second switch is supposed to get reset when you push the on/off switch on the outside of the machine. The full bag shutoff switch was stiff and it, therefore, was taking a couple of presses of the on/off switch to move the shutoff switch back into the running position.
