Dyson DC17 Animal Bagless Upright Cyclonic Vacuum

How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

If your Dyson Ball Animal vacuum no longer sucks up dirt, dust, and debris when using the nozzle and its attachments, there may be a clog in the vacuum`s nozzle. Unplug the vacuum and use the Dyson Ball Animal Hose Replacement Guide to remove the vacuum`s hose and check for clogs at the base of the hose.
A clog is a common (perhaps the most common) reason that a Dyson unit loses suction. They have a number of choke points in the airflow paths. Some considerations follow: Hoses: because of their often rough inner surfaces and inevitable bends, hoses are prime locations for clogs.
If you find that your machine is turning off intermittently, the filter in your vacuum is most likely full and covering the ventilation system. Remove the filter, then empty and wash it. Allow the filter to dry for at least 24 hours, or until it is completely dry.
If you have lost suction from the wand handle on your Dyson vacuum, remove the handle and check the hose suction, if the hose suction is good then obviously you have a blockage in your wand handle. Common sense but its surprising how many callouts I have had for this simple problem.
The suction control slider is located at the front of the cleaner head. The ball located between the bin and the cleaner head.
The most common cause of loss of suction is that the filters have become blocked. They may require cleaning or replacing. Another cause could be that the vacuum cleaner hose is blocked.
Clean Your Dyson Vacuum:

Thoroughly clean the dust bucket and flapper by shaking or tapping it to release any dirt that has become clogged if your Dyson is pulsing, stopping, or making noise. Rinse your filter monthly, even if it looks clean on the outside.

Check the LED light to determine the battery level. A solid blue light indicates that the machine is in normal operating mode. A flashing blue light indicates that there is no power, and the battery needs to be charged for a minimum of 3.5 hours.
Our machines are engineered with six layers of advanced whole machine filtration, which means that we capture 99.97% of microns as small as 0.3 microns. Our fully sealed system keeps dust in the machine, drawing the airflow through all six layers of filtration, expelling cleaner air into your home.
The Vacuum will not Stand Upright

Locate the u-bend cover, press the yellow release button, and look for any possible blockages. These blockages may be preventing the machine from locking in its upright position as well as reclining when already locked.

One of the easiest ways to increase vacuum cleaner suction is to empty the dust bag or container. Dust containers need to have enough space for airflow, otherwise, they could get clogged and have less suction power. Regularly check your dust compartment and empty or change it when it`s already 70-80% full.
Clog located in the vacuum hose

Turn the unit on and feel the suction at the end of the hose handle. If there is no or low suction, then the clog is in the hose. You can remove the clog by running a long, stiff object through the hose, such as a butter knife, starting at the wall end.

All vacuum cleaners operate based on air flowing from the opening at the cleaning head or tool, through the vacuum cleaner and the bag and/or filter system and then out the exhaust port. This airflow is created by the vacuum motor, which also may be referred to as the suction motor.
Low compression, an intake leak or tight valves also can cause low vacuum at idle. If the vacuum reading fluctuates within the normal range-the gauge needle bounces around a lot-uneven compression (broken rings or leaking valves or head gasket in one or two cylinders) is a likely culprit.
Many reasons can cause low refrigerant suction pressure, i.e.: low indoor temperature, dirty filters, restricted ducts, undersized ducts, closed dampers, frosted coils, restricted refrigerant line, restricted piston, incorrect piston, restricted strainer, bad indoor blower motor ect.
In many cases, you probably can repair a Dyson yourself, especially when it comes to common issues (see below). However, even if your machine needs some extra TLC by a Dyson expert, it can be worth getting it repaired.
Dyson battery life

On average, it has been seen that Dyson battery of these handheld vacuums will last for around 4 years. Generally, it is seen that lithium-ion batteries tend to wear-off after the first year of its usage, as they are limited to a few charging cycles.

It`s possible there`s a power consumption issue, with there just not being enough residual charge to run the machine. A new battery should fix this. My other thought is that it`s overheating. If too much power is pushed through the motor, which MAX power does, it could stop after a few seconds if it become hot.
Over time, all batteries are subject to degradation. So if your run time has declined when the machine is not in Max / Boost mode, it might be time to buy a new battery. All our machines come with a 2-year initial warranty that includes the battery.
Most problems arise because of a blockage – if not a dirty filter or cyclone unit, then something could be caught in the wand or the brush bar. Once again, the lack of suction could be caused by a dirty filter or a blockage somewhere in the vacuum`s system.
If you`re looking for a complete rebuild, you can expect to pay $100 or more. However, you may be able to get your Dyson repaired for free if the service is covered by the product`s warranty. According to Dyson, cordless vacuums have a two-year warranty while corded models have a five-year warranty.
So, `detach the hose from the wand, then clean its insides using a cloth pushed inside with the help of a broomstick or anything similar. ` Again, as with other Dyson parts, avoid using detergent; instead, `you can submerge the hose into a warm water and vinegar mixture for about 5 to 10 minutes to remove bacteria.
It`s important to reset your filter life after you have replaced your filter. Resetting your HEPA+Carbon filter life Press and hold the Night mode button on your remote control. The display on your machine will countdown from five, the filter life will be reset and your machine is ready to use.

I purchased a brand new Eureka Pet vacuum, sorry don’t know exact name but it the one that has the self cleaning duster on it. Last night I used the vacuum on my carpet, it was working fine until I accidently sucked up the corner of a scarf that was hanging off a couch. I shut the vacuum off, pulled out the scarf and and resumed vacuuming. Much to my dismay the suction on the vacuum had ceased. Can you tell me if there is a reset button on the vacuum? The vacuum does not appear to be damage
ANSWER : If the motor is running, there should be suction. Possible problems depend on whether it’s a canister or upright and are:
.A clog in the hose, UR or canister. Detach hose. Drop small coin in one end and lift hose causing it to roll out the other. If it does, no clog in hose. Drop same coin into hose opening on power head. If it rolls out, no clog in PN.
.Broken fan blades, UR. Needs to be taken to shop for repair/replacement.
.
.A reset button is for use if the motor isn’t running, so won’t have anything to do with the suction.

No suction in the wand and the vacuum shuts off in the upright position. Just bought a new filter
ANSWER : The wand is clogged. shuttimg off sounds weird. but maybe your cord or something is hitting the off switch.

Unbeknownst to me, someone took the bag out of my Kenmore Progressive vacuum and failed to replace it. I have been vacuuming without a bag for months, and today the vacuum stopped sucking. When I opened up the front to replace the bag, tons of dirt and dust came pouring out. I thoroughly cleaned the vacuum, put in a new bag, but still no sucking power. Just dust coming from the rear vents where one of the filters is. Is the vacuum ruined, or is it a simple solution of buying a new filter?
ANSWER : Sounds like you need to buy a new motor. All that grit and dust will ruin a motor and I’m surprised it lasted as long as it did.
.This is where a vacuum that won’t run without a bag would have been nice. (Aerus for one)

.Hello,
I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. Typically the top filter of which is the sponge is washable but the HEPA filter is not, it can be brushed off and vacuum off with another vacuum, but the best filtration is to replace the HEPA filter and to wash the sponge filter, if the sponge filter get to bad then replace the sponge filter as well. Dirt devil vacuum cleaner–trouble vacuuming dirt and pet hair on carpeting –is the problem with the spinning brush which contacts the floor,  not contacting the carpeting??  I thought (when I bought this vacuum) that the aforementioned brush was adjustable to various heights of carpeting.  Sometimes, it seems like nothing is being vacuumed up –unless I have just put a new bag on the vacuum… Do I need or can I replace the spinning brush on the bottom of the vacuum so it kicks up and vacuums
ANSWER : Try replacing the belt. Rubber belts stretch out after about a year.

My Oreck vacuum cleaner will only stay on in the upright position. If I try to recline it to vacuum, it shuts off…put it back up and it turns back on. Of course I can’t vacuum in the upright position…what do I do?
ANSWER : It sound as if you have a short in the cord or it has come loose from the motor you can take it part by removing the four screws in the buttom of the base plate to see if any of the wires are loose.

The original belt on my upright Kenmore Progressive broke and I replaced it with the spare that was in the vacuum. The vacuum and spare belt are about 10 years old. Then the spare broke after one vacuuming session and there was a burning smell coming from the vacuum. I ordered new belts and replaced it with the new belt. It seems to be working fine with no smell. I checked the belt after I vacuumed the family room and although it was in tact, the belt was very hot. Is that normal? Should t
ANSWER : The belt heats up due to the friction, as well as being in contact with the shaft of a hot motor. It is normal.
