How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

Loose connections will cause your vacuum cleaner to lose suction. Make sure that the dust container, the hose, the tube and the brush are all attached properly. If the problem continues, your vacuum cleaner might have a technical problem. If you suspect this to be the case, contact an authorised service agent.
The simplest place to start: empty your dirt container. Debris in the main cyclone passage will cut suction rapidly. If the container was really full, you should also check the filters because they can get loaded with dust if the Dirt container is too full. Test the vacuum, and see if the suction is back.
This pressure drop behind the fan is just like the pressure drop in the straw when you sip from your drink. The pressure level in the area behind the fan drops below the pressure level outside the vacuum cleaner (the ambient air pressure). This creates suction, a partial vacuum, inside the vacuum cleaner.
So, the usual areas that cause suction loss include the wrong height setting, stuck rollers, a faulty gasket, a broken vacuum belt, a filled bag, or a clogged hose.
One of the easiest ways to increase vacuum cleaner suction is to empty the dust bag or container. Dust containers need to have enough space for airflow, otherwise, they could get clogged and have less suction power. Regularly check your dust compartment and empty or change it when it`s already 70-80% full.
Overcharging leads to overfeeding the evaporator with refrigerant, which leads to higher suction pressure. Another possibility is having oversized EXV causes an overfeed to the evaporate, which increases your suction pressure.
Breathing uses the same concept as a straw, but this time your lungs expand, which creates low pressure in the lungs and the outside air is pushed — not sucked — in. There is no such thing as a “suction” cup.
Boil old suction cups to revive them.

Take the pot off of heat and drop your suction cups in for about 30 seconds. Take them out with a pair of tongs and pat them dry on a lint-free towel. Try to use the suction cups right after you dry so they`re still warm and flexible.

The two main indicators to determine vacuum power performance are water lift and airflow. The water lift is measured in mmH2O, mbar or kPa. It represents the suction force and is the reference parameter for vacuuming liquids and heavy materials. The airflow is measured in m3/h or in l/s.
The type of dust collector or vacuum cleaner bag and the size of it affect the suction power of a vacuum. When a vacuum cleaner bag has an extra filter, the vacuum needs a higher suction power. That way, the air will flow outwards through all the filters.
Dyson invested £2.5 billion in research and development.

While you might feel that this is the reason their products are expensive, you`re highly mistaken. This investment was mainly to accommodate a centre for their 1,200 employees, 22 laboratories, prototyping space, and areas for collaborative work.

Hot environments speed up battery aging. So it`s best to avoid cleaning the car in hot weather or leaving your vacuum in rooms that experience direct sunlight for prolonged periods. The same goes for cold porches and garages in winter.
How and when to clean/replace your Dyson filter. Your Dyson vacuum cleaner may include one or more filters that need to be cleaned to keep your machine operating at its best. Washing your Dyson filter is quick and easy.
We recommend replacing your air purifier filter every 12 months. That`s because over time, filters can get clogged with pollutants, and even let unpleasant odors back into the room.
Any under-sizing (which is a restriction) or other type of restriction in these vital conduits that affects the flow of this refrigerant/oil vapor mixture can cause a multitude of problems from diminished capacity, refrigerant system blockages due to oil concentration even outright failure.
If there is a clog in the vacuum, you won`t have good suction and the vacuum won`t work. The clog can be in the vacuum head, the hose or where the hose meets the actual vacuum.
Suction is the air pressure differential between areas. Removing air from a space results in a pressure differential. Suction pressure is therefore limited by external air pressure. Even a perfect vacuum cannot suck with more pressure than is available in the surrounding environment.
The suction motor creates vacuum pressure and suction by rotating a motor fan. The impeller rotates at an incredibly high speed of about 30,000 to 35,000 RPM. A suction motor`s power is measured by multiplying the rate of air flow and the vacuum pressure, which induces air flow from the brush through the hose.
Use a mild detergent or a mixture of bleach and water (1 part bleach/10 parts water) and rinse thoroughly. Follow the instruction manual when disinfecting the mechanics of the unit. Never submerge the suction unit. Use disinfectant wipes to clean all outer surfaces, including control knobs, screens and handles.
Suction cup manufacturers suggest wetting the inner perimeter of your suction cups with with warm water to make them stick better and create a tighter seal.
Cupping is an alternative therapy that involves suctioning the skin with glass, plastic, or silicone cups. It may help improve blood flow, boost immune function, remove toxins, and reduce pain.
Next, you need to consider suction power. Typically expressed in Pa (pascals), this is a measurement of how powerful the motor is inside a robot vacuum. A good number to look for here is around 2,000Pa or above for an effective clean.

No suction I’ve only had my vacuum for a couple of months and it seem I have a similar problem but there is no clear blockage. It seems like I don’t have adequate suction that reaches the accessory hoses nor the main one. I’m not sure where to start. I’ve taken the darn thing apart but I can’t see any obvious malfunction. Any suggestions?
ANSWER : If you have low suction at the end of the hose, then you either have a clog in the hose or a clogged filter. Take the hose off and drop something in it to see if it comes out the other end. If you have suction at the end of the hose, then the dirt inlet by the brush roll is clogged.

Poor suction I have a hoover hush s5627 vacuum purchased about 4 years ago from Costco. It’s suction power isn’t so good anymore. I’ve checked all the lines & hoses and they’re clear and I’ve changed the bag. I even disconnected the pipe from the vacuum unit and held my hand over the intake. While the machine roars like a jet engine the suction power just ain’t like it used to be. What could possibly be the problem?
ANSWER : This vaccuum has a Fan Blade inside connected to the motor that spins to create the suction you feel. After a few years of use (and misuse) the blades on this (plastic) fan will be broken off, thus damaging the unit. These Fans are replaceable if you can find where you can purchase a new one. Now, if you have any knowledge of repairs at all, it’s not that hard to replace to fix. If you don’t feel capable of this though, I suggest you refer to someone more qualified to do this repair.

I have a Hoover, Steam spin scrub, Model F5897-900.
Only used it a couple times and the motor gave out.
First started being noisy then a bad smell. It did seem
noisier that what I would expect from the start but I
didn’t realize it was a problem with the shaft of the motor.
I took it apart and found the motor shaft wasn’t
true and causing sparks. The motor looks like it can
not be taken apart and repaired. This seems like a default from the beginning but it is past warranty. Also noti
ANSWER : You will have to replace the motor and the hose asm. thehooverstore.com may be able to help, or you should be able to find a repair shop that can order them for you.

No suction vacuum won’t pick up — I’ve checked the bag, hose…and it seems to have no sucking power. The internal hose may be jammed (I vacuumed up a lot of shredded paper), but nothing as far as I can stick in fingers in. I don’t have a metal coat hanger to slip down, but I’m afraid that might tear the hose and then the darn thing won’t work anyway. :o(
ANSWER : If it is plugged, try using a tape measure, i know it sounds stupid but it will work to unplug your line and will not tear your hose..

Poor suction The actual sweeper seems to work ok, but the hose attachment has some suction but not enough to pick up things I think it should and not enough to make the power brush spin. I’ve checked everywhere I can for clogs, but I can’t see anything. And there doesn’t seem to be any way to check to hose itself for clogs. I’ve cleaned out the container and the filters, but there’s still a problem.
ANSWER : Check the inlet down by the brush roll, make sure it is open, if it is then the hose itself must have a clog. If the hose comes off, drop something like a marble in one end and see it it comes out the other end, if it doesn’t then you have a clog.

My bissell proheat upright steam cleaner is spraying out through the attachments just fine, but will not spray to the floor when using upright. we’ve taken it apart to find that there is no water at all going through one of the hoses, but it appears the hose is connected behind the on/off and heat switches, we can’t seem to figure out how to get in there to replace that hose….any suggestions on how to access this?? just curious how you would get in to replace the hose, we know it is the hose..

Dirt devil vacuum cleaner–trouble vacuuming dirt and pet hair on carpeting –is the problem with the spinning brush which contacts the floor,  not contacting the carpeting??  I thought (when I bought this vacuum) that the aforementioned brush was adjustable to various heights of carpeting.  Sometimes, it seems like nothing is being vacuumed up –unless I have just put a new bag on the vacuum… Do I need or can I replace the spinning brush on the bottom of the vacuum so it kicks up and vacuums
ANSWER : Try replacing the belt. Rubber belts stretch out after about a year.

Won’t start. My son was using the vacuum & Didn’t change the bag. The vacuum was making the full bag smell, but the light was’t on & it didn’t stop. I stopped him, changed the bag, checked the filter, closed the compartments & turned on the vacuum. Nothing happened. I checked to be sure that it was plugged in, that wasn’t the problem. I’ve let the vacuum “rest” for several days, It still won’t start. Any suggestions?
ANSWER : There is a reset button at the back of the powerhead. The user manual can be downloaded from the electrolux website, although I didn’t find it very useful. There was some info on how to change the powerhead drive belt.
