How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

The Oreck family sold their vacuum cleaner business to private equity investors in 2003, initially American Securities Capital Partners. Ten years later, following Chapter 11 bankruptcy it was purchased by Techtronic Industries.
The most common problem with a vacuum cleaner is also the easiest to remedy: clogs in the hose or attachments. Also the electrical cord, motor, switch, fan, brushes, and motor bearings can all need repair or replacement. The drive belt may need replacing; and the attachments, hoses, and filters may need unclogging.
Today the company produces and sells vacuums, steam mops, floor machines, air purifiers and cleaning products for use in both hotels and homes throughout the U.S., Canada and parts of Europe.

Each one of our innovative vacuums provide HEPA grade filtration, advanced cleaning power, and an ultra-lightweight design – so you can tackle any job, big or small, with confidence.

The most common problems found in vacuum cleaners are low suction force, excessive noise, burning smell, vacuum not turn on, and overheating. These issues can be fixed by either cleaning the device or replacing some parts of the device. At times, it is best to seek a professional to fix the cleaner effectively.
As a general rule, if the repair is going to cost less than half the cost of a new vacuum cleaner, it`s best to go ahead and get it repaired. When the service tops half the price of a new machine, it`s probably best to invest in a newer model.
Check that the vacuum cleaner is plugged into a working power outlet and that fuses and breakers don`t need resetting. An activated thermal cut-out due to a blockage is the next most likely cause of the problem. Check for blockages in the hose and filters, and remove any obstructions that you find.
The problem may lie in your vacuum cleaner`s adapter, charging dock, or battery and the electrical outlet. Try plugging your vacuum cleaner in to another outlet. If it is now working, the problem was in the first outlet that you have used. You should contact a certified electrician if you need to fix that outlet.
The brush roll or its bearings may be clogged with hair, threads or dirt. Make sure they are clean and the roll spins. The belt may also have slipped because it was loose. Check the fit of the new belt when it is installed.

Installing roller brush for oreck XL 21 – Oreck XL Ultra Bagged Upright Vacuum
ANSWER : Uh, probably not sure what the issue is, but
.1. unplug unit.
.2. Remove the multiple screws from the bottom of the unit.
.3. remove the bottom baseplate (usually black)
.4. the brush roll is now visible, and the belt should be around it.
.5. Pull the brush roll away from the unit, and disengage the belt.
.6. Replace in the opposite order. Make sure that baseplate fits properly to insure a good seal. Also watch the bumper (rubber part that is wrapped around the unit) to make sure it is properly seated.
.7. Handroll the roller brush before plugging in. Make sure it moves freely.
.8. Run unit, may get a slight burning smell, but if this continues for more than a minute – turn off and inspect the unit. Brush roll requires a short burn in time, on initial build, factory accomplishes this during test procedures.

Hello, I have an Electrolux vacuum. In desperation, I vacuumed up some water and my machine stopped. I am hesitant to take the machine to a repair place for fear that if it is a simple repair they will not be honest. Can anyone give me advice on whether this is a problem that requires a new motor or major repair? Thank you!
ANSWER : Although it’s never to be recommended, it is sometimes possible to vacuum up a little water without doing significant damage. However, the fact that your machine then stopped suggests that the electrics got wet. That may or may not have caused expensive damage (probably not), but it is essential that the machine be thoroughly dried out before further attempts to use it. That will involve dismantling it, and my guess is that the labour involved will be the most costly part of the job. A competent vacuum engineer should be able to complete the job in about an hour..
.Good luck! Please remember to rate this response – thank you.

My Oreck XL 9100HA started smoking (white smoke) when I vacuumed. There is a burning rubber smell. How do I check/change (if appropriate) the belt? I have no User manual, nor can I locate one on the Oreck site. The bag is a new one. The vaccuum had been picking up, though not at its best strength.
ANSWER : It sounds like the belt has been damaged. You can get another belt from yoru local Oreck store. You can even take it in to the store to show them what happened. Purchase another belt and replace it. (It was very easy when I did this, so hopefully the belt is all you’ll need too.)

Best of luck!
