How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

Most of the time, a solid red light means there`s something wrong with your vacuum`s main brush roll, meaning the brush isn`t spinning correctly. In many cases, a bogged-down brush roll simply won`t spin at all.
Shark vacuum cleaners often have a brush roll indicator light. This shows whether the vacuum`s brush roll is functioning correctly or whether there is an error. A solid green light shows that the vacuum`s brush roll is spinning correctly.
Short answer, the manufacture decides to either to add or not add a light. A light does help in showing if the carpet is clean or not. Most older vacuums and many higher priced vacuums have lights.
If you checked your brush roll, floor setting, and belt but your brush roll is still not spinning, that means you probably need a Shark micro switch replacement. This small switch tells the vacuums brush when to start spinning.
Your Shark robot vac should have blue LED indicator lights on the top of the unit to show battery strength. As long as at least one of these indicator lights is on, then your bot probably has enough remaining battery life to go back to its charger automatically.
The lights will flash when the unit is charging, with 1 light representing it has a low charge, while 3 lights represents the unit is fully charged. When the unit is in use, the number of illuminated lights will go down as the battery becomes depleted.
If the icon turns red, you will need to clean the filter for the corresponding icon.
It`s important to fully charge the machine before using it for the first time, and after every clean. This helps to improve the algorithm`s accuracy. The battery is designed to be left on charge permanently, and this will ensure that the vacuum is fully charged when it`s next used.
Roller brush is not spinning

Check to make sure the vacuum is switched to the correct mode. The switch should be in the Power and Brushroll mode to make the roller spin. If it is in just the power mode the roller will not move. The brushroll indicator light should be green when working.

To reset your shark vacuum, put the Power button in the On-Off position and keep the vacuum unplugged. If necessary, clear the hose. Once it has cooled completely, plug the vacuum back in again.
Yes you can leave it in the charger.
Simply remove the battery and charge it at any plug socket in your home. You can also leave a spare battery on charge, so you always have one ready to go when the one in your vacuum runs out. It`s easy to purchase additional batteries directly from Shark.
With proper care, your robot`s battery should last at least 2-3 years before it needs to be replaced.
If your Shark ION Robot R75 vacuum stops moving unexpectedly after a few minutes of normal movement, it may simply have low battery power. Check that the device is powered on and that the battery has a significant charge.
If the red light ring around the CLEAN button is pulsing, the Roomba i Series battery charge is too law to start cleaning.
The light on the Home Base® will go on for approximately four (4) seconds and then turn off and remain off while the robot continues to charge. The light ring on your robot will illuminate to signal that it is charging.
The LED Shark Light is a perfect combination of art and technology. The flat 2D etched graphic is magically transformed into an illuminated 3D image with the use of 7 energy efficient LED lights integrated in the base. use the touch button to change the mode or select from 7 different colors.
The lights on the hand vacuum show the remaining charge in the battery. The lights will also blink and illuminate to show the status of the battery while charging. In addition, the lights will illuminate in certain configurations to inform you of any issues with the hand vacuum or nozzle.
If the indicator light is flashing red, the thermostat is overheating. To reset the thermostat, turn off and unplug the vacuum. Empty the dust cup and filter and assure there are no blockages in the hose. Allow the vacuum to cool for at least 45 minutes before turning it back on.
The vacuum has a safety feature that turns off the vacuum when the vacuum gets to a certain high temperature or overheats. This happens because the vacuum has a motor protective thermostat. If the vacuum turns off due to overheating, the thermostat has to be reset before you can use it again.
Pulsing red:

Charging, too low to start. The battery needs to be charged. Leave the robot on the base.

If there is a clog in the vacuum, you won`t have good suction and the vacuum won`t work. The clog can be in the vacuum head, the hose or where the hose meets the actual vacuum.
Most vacuum makers recommend cleaning or replacing filters at set intervals—and those intervals vary wildly. Tineco, for example, recommends cleaning the filters on its stick vacuums after every few uses, while Miele says you need to change its vacuum filters only after every fourth bag change.

I have a Roomba 560 (it’s still in warranty !!) and, after my summer vacation, it has a problem.
When I’m charging Roomba, the orange light blinks (and this is normal!) but this orange blinking continues forever…. the light doesn’t change to green.
If I detach Roomba from the charger, the light become green and it works normally until the light changes to red and I have to charge it again.

WHY, DURING THE CHARGING PHASE, THE LIGHT DOESN’T CHANGE FROM ORANGE-BLINKING TO GREEN?

HAVE I

ANSWER : The problem is not with the charger itself but it is with the battery inside the Roomba. It sunds like one or more of the cells has gone bad so its not holding the same charge as it did. I would recomend sending it in while the warranty is still valid so they will replace it. Your charger and the Roomba itself should be fine.

A few tips to keep the battery working longer:
Only charge the battery when it is drained all the way to zero. It will help keep the battery active.

Only charge the battery until it is full and then disconect it from the power source. It will keep it active longer plus it will help keep your electric bill down.

Red light stays on
ANSWER : It sounds like the plates inside the vacuum that detect the dirt have become dirty. I don’t remember where they are, but I think they’re accessible if you remove a certain hose. Again, I don’t know which hose it is.

Dirt finder I have a Hoover U6439-900.  After the cleaner was used a few times, the dirt finder light cycles between green and red on the regular setting and will not go to green.  On the sensitive setting, the red light stays on most of the time.  I have tried to run the cleaner to remove any dirt but have not solved the problem.
ANSWER : The sensor may be bad, or it may be coated over with dirt. Re,ove the hose at the back of the vacuum, the head of the sensor is down inside that opening, reach in there and clean it off and see it that corrects the problem, if not replace the sensor.

After being on the charger for days and the green light is on I press the clean button. The Roomba leaves the charging unit and travels about 1 foot then the red light comes on and it beeps and won’t do anything more the red light continues to pulse.
ANSWER : Buy a new battery ,the old one isn’t holding a charge

Embedded light sensor stays red all the time
ANSWER : The back cover is called the a micro/dust assembly. See #21 here:

.The little sensor should be in the round recess in the top of that assembly. When you are putting the cover back on you have to use a pair of needle nose pliers to push the sensor into the round recess until it is snug. It is hard to do because the wires to the sensor are very short and you have to be careful not to break the wires on the sensor. The sensor is a little microphone that senses the noise of the dirt going through the EDF. The first time I did mine I didn’t push it in hard enough and came out of the EDF recess and fell inside the vacuum body.

My Hoover Dirt Finder red light stays on. All
ANSWER : Inspection of the circuit board found that the 470uF capacitor looked damaged. I replaced it and I now have the Green and Red lights are working correctly.

Red light stays on
ANSWER : Most likely the hose or the inlet down by the brush roll has a clog in it. The red light indicates a full bag, but if there is a clog, then it thinks it has a full bag.

When i turn on the vacuum it shuts right off. the speckled bag light is on (2 lights under the plug light)
ANSWER : Im going to guess you have an Electrolux Tank. the control valve inside probably went bad. normally i just disconnect it. Do no try to take it apart if you don’t know what your doing. take it to a vacuum shop.
