How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?
Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :
If the motor filter (located below the bag) is dirty, hand wash with soapy water. Rinse with clear water, squeeze out excess water, and allow it to dry completely before returning it to the vacuum. Insert a new dust bag and close the cover.
The reusable cotton dust bag is washable both by hand and washing machine. Always empty the dust bag before washing. It is recommended to not exceed a washing temperature of 30 degrees Celsius, as the cotton could shrink. For the same reason, avoid the use of a dryer.
Any fine dust remaining in the filter can usually be removed with a gentle rinse under a cold tap – hold the filter under the running water until the water runs clear. You shouldn`t need to use any detergent – just water.
Gently pull out the mesh filters from the water supply intakes using a pair of pliers. And rinse them under running water until they are clean.
Neglect your vacuum filter bags, and you`ll swiftly lose suction power. This, in turn, places unnecessary strain on your vacuum`s motor. Eventually, your vacuum will become a lot more difficult to maneuver, not to mention less effective at cleaning your rugs, carpeting, or other surfaces.

I have a Sears Upright vacuum cleaner, model 116.35922500. The vacuum wasn’t picking up. I discovered a clog in the nozzle hose. I attempted to remove the cover of the brush unit to clear the clog. I was unable to remove the cover completely, but was able to clear the clog. My problem now is that I cannot replace the cover correctly. Is there a way to remove this cover? Thanks, Elizabeth
When you tried to remove the cover did you have to put a little force on it to get to the clog
Kenmore Model 116 Cannister Vacuum.Trying to get into motor area. Think belt is worn out. I have removed the front two screws under the hinged cover, but can not remove cover over motor.. Still attached at rear. No evidence of any more screws to remove.
Under the cordwinder actuator button, are your other two screws. To remove this cover, take a flat tipped screwdriver and , very carefully, find the “tabs” (there are two) both on the front section under the button. Then, Carefully, press them in and back and up, in that order, one at atime, or both if you can. Your button should pop off, it can be a bit tricky, I know, it feels like it could break. But don’t worry, they usually don’t break. If you think that there is a problem with your belt, there is no reason to be accessing the motor compartment, for there is not a belt anywhere except the power nozzle, and if you press the circuit breaker/reset switch (while unit is running) located on the power nozzle, this will often solve problems with your belt. I hope i could help fixya! Let me know, thanks! Rene (the Vacuum Doctor)

- The motor / cord compartment cover must be removed to access the cord reel. There are four screws that hold the cover to the chassis. Two of the screws are found under the cord-retractor-foot-pedal on the top back of the canister. To access these screws the pedal must be removed. To do this, press the pedal down and look (from the top) for the four plastic clips that attach/hold the pedal hinges to the cover. There are two at the end corners and two in the middle. Using a long, thin flat-head screw driver (or similar instrument) press each clip to unhook/popout the hinges. Note: the foot pedal spring will also come out when the pedal is removed.
The other two screws are found under the curved hinges of the vaccum bag compartment cover. To access these, lift the cover as if accessing the vacuum bag. Keep pulling the cover back until the hinges release from the motor cover. Don’t worry, it is disigned to do this and will not break but it may require a little force. A long phillip-head screw driver will be needed to access and remove each screw
Agitator belt failed in my Hoover F5853-900 Steam Vacuum Cleaner. But can not remove bottom Cover .. have removed top cover and two screws from the bottom Cover. The smaller Cover is glued to the large Bottom Cover. Need help.
Unscrew the plate. check if there is any screws at the bottom, if none, exact little pressure to pull out the bottom cover. At this .point you should be able to see the broken drive belt along with the two. drive bars. Remove any debris from the vacuum head. Untangle any long threads .wrapped around the beater bar. These only put more strain on a drive .belt, so keep this area of your vacuum clean..Slip the new drive belt on the beater bar. Connect it with the drive .shaft. You may need to use the screwdriver to stretch the belt enough to. get it over the two shafts.
Make sure the beater bar turns freely with the new drive belt attached. Put the plate back over the beater bars.

What you need to do is take it apart and look for any carpet peices dug up in there preventing the motor to spin. Also go look for another filter for it and if you google it you can probably get instructions or if you still have the book.

You have to take off the top of the power nozzel that has the light lense. There are two pressure locks, one on each side. Use a screw driver to release. You will see the screws.Take the two screws out and on some models, there are two pressure locks on the back of the nozzel. Again use the screw driver to release. The top should come right off.Hope this helps.
