How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

Fortunately, it is easy to repair a vacuum hose with this problem and the hose will only be a few centimeters shorter once repaired. In some cases, you wont need any new parts to complete the repair, but if you do they are readily available and much cheaper than a new hose.
Generally, the vacuum hoses on your vehicle are made from rubber and are supposed to last for a lifetime.
The most common problem with a vacuum cleaner is also the easiest to remedy: clogs in the hose or attachments. Also the electrical cord, motor, switch, fan, brushes, and motor bearings can all need repair or replacement. The drive belt may need replacing; and the attachments, hoses, and filters may need unclogging.
The term vacuum hose can refer to any of the flexible tubes that are used to transmit vacuum power throughout your vehicle. When the hoses get smaller, they tend to be referred to as “vacuum lines” or “vacuum tubing” rather than vacuum hoses, but they essentially work in the same way.
Vacuum leak repair cost varies widely, depending on what is causing the leak. You could end up spending anywhere from $100 to $1,500. If it`s just a hose that`s leaking, and the leak is obvious, the mechanic just needs to install a replacement hose. Expect to spend $50-$100 on labor, plus the cost of the hose.
Hi-Vac hose glue, an adhesive that is uniquely formulated to meet high-performance needs, such as needed for glueing high vacuum hoses.
Vacuum hoses come in various sizes, and they often play a part in many individual`s buying decisions when shopping for a new wet/dry or shop vacuum. Smaller diameter vacuum hoses are often more navigable and flexible, not to mention lighter, and for specific applications, there are performance benefits.
Start the engine and spray

Scope out all the vacuum lines under the hood. Then start the engine and spray each connection with a light stream of water. If a connection sucks in the water, you`ve found your leak. A vacuum leak can cause a rough idle, high rpm, poor gas mileage and even trigger a check-engine light.

The most common problems found in vacuum cleaners are low suction force, excessive noise, burning smell, vacuum not turn on, and overheating. These issues can be fixed by either cleaning the device or replacing some parts of the device. At times, it is best to seek a professional to fix the cleaner effectively.
Our basic vacuum hoses come in many lengths, including: 25ft, 30ft, 35ft, and 50ft.
Silicone hoses are more durable against environmental conditions. If you regularly drive your vehicle in harsh environments, silicone vacuum hoses are a great choice.
Engine loses power or won`t start

If the pressure is too high, it can cause a head gasket to be pushed out, can cause cylinder head hardware to break or in some cases, will cause detonation inside the engine.

* Use a crimp-type mender to fix a rubber hose. Insert one end of the mender into a hose end until it seats well. Wet the hose if the tube is a tight fit. Place the end of the hose on a metal anvil or wooden block and hammer down the prongs of the mender gently and gradually until they grip the hose tightly all around.
For repairing damaged hose by joining two pieces of hose together. Key Benefits Include: Repair damaged hose 12.5mm & 15mm in diameter. Use to permanently connect two lengths of hose.
A typical price for a Shop Vacuum Hose is $40 but can range from approximately $15 to $620.
Most vacuum makers recommend cleaning or replacing filters at set intervals—and those intervals vary wildly. Tineco, for example, recommends cleaning the filters on its stick vacuums after every few uses, while Miele says you need to change its vacuum filters only after every fourth bag change.
If your vacuum cleaner has lost suction power, it`s time to empty the container. Vacuum cleaners come with various foam or mesh filters. These might get clogged over time if not cleaned or replaced properly. This will cause your vacuum to lose suction.
Most vacuum hoses are made out of rubber, which is acceptable for most applications. However, silicone vacuum lines are also available for applications where the tube is exposed to a lot of heat.
Aside from being somewhat easier to coil and manage, the smaller diameter hose has an effect on performance as well. As you shrink the diameter of your opening, two things occur simultaneously. Your CFM (air volume) drops and your water lift (suction power) increases.
Clog located in the vacuum hose

Turn the unit on and feel the suction at the end of the hose handle. If there is no or low suction, then the clog is in the hose. You can remove the clog by running a long, stiff object through the hose, such as a butter knife, starting at the wall end.

Broken vacuum tube or hose: The most common cause of a vacuum leak is a broken, torn or disconnected vacuum hose or tube. Because of the extreme heat generated by an internal combustion engine, these plastic and rubber tubes can deteriorate or break and cause a vacuum leak.
Connect a tachometer and vacuum gauge to a none regulated vacuum source on the engine. Disconnect and plug fuel vapor canister vacuum lines. Start engine and run the engine until it reaches normal operating temperature. Note the vacuum gauge reading and any variations in the pointer movement at idle and 2000 RPM.
The average life expectancy of a mid-range vacuum cleaner is about six years. You can fix or replace things like blocked filters, jammed brush rolls, frayed hoses, worn-out stick vac batteries and broken accessories yourself.

Hello, I have a Hoover quadraflex Powermatic central vacuum system Model # s8099-031 that requires a new replacement 35 ft hose…I have contacted Hoover and they do not know where to buy a replacement hose for this model. I live in Canada. Any idea where I can get a replacement hose for this system? Thanks kindly, Tammy
ANSWER : Tammy, no info re your location, so I”l try this.
Your Hoover hose is shot because it was made of rubber. There are new swivel handled, tangle proof lighter hoses made of vinyl which will last much longer and can be adapted to the old Hoover head by changing the upper steel tube.
Find a Hoover service center, outlet in the yellow pages and ask for the “NEW “style, gray“Plastiflex“ brand hose and upper adapter tube sold with new Hoovers at Costco and you will be all set. Then, when the head eventually dies, you can upgrade to a far better one , while still having the Hoover cannister, the hose and tools do not need to match the original tank.

Replaced internal pump. Color coded hoses for replacement. Marker has worn off hoses. Need proper routing of hoses from clean water tank, to heater to spray nozzles. An internal schematic of hose routing is preferred.
ANSWER : Hi
.
.Thanks for using FixYa. Please remove the top cover of your Bissell cleaner. Now place the Auto-Mix selector knob to the water only position. Turn the cover over. You will notice an angle on the top of the piston. This will fit between a couple of plastic ridges on the top cover by the selector screw.
.Now angle the piston slightly forward and engage the angled cut in the top of the piston with the screw thread and pull back. Turn the screw to the high traffic position and replace the cover. Apply a very little amount of silicon grease around the Auto-Mix piston ‘O’ ring, it will ease the re- installation of the cover.

We replaced the short hose that connects the sucking part to the hole where the dirt goes underneath my Dyson DC07 but now the side of the hose that needs to attach to the machine falls off.
ANSWER : I know the hose you are talking about it is called the DC07 internal hose. Over time the ends can stretch and perish which will mean you need to purchase a new one. Amazon or VacuumSpot will be able to help you out here. If you have some gasket adhesive you could use some of that on the end (use gasket adhesive not glue because gasket adhesive can be removed whereas glue will make a mess).
I will also post a video which show how to properly dismantle this part of your dyson in case you may have made a assembly error.

Can the damaged hose 8 inces from handle be cut then replace hose
ANSWER : If the hose is non-wired then you can fix this yourself. When you Plug the cuff into your wall inlet does the vacuum turn on automatically? If so then you should be able to trim the hose with no ill effects other than losing eight inches of cleaning area.
.
.If the hose has a switch on it’s handle that turns the vacuum on and off, you will probably need a technician to fix the hose. Some wired hoses even have High Voltage lines in them and should never be taken apart.
