How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

Most manufacturers recommend you change your filter on average every 3-6 months. However, it is recommended to change your filter even earlier depending on usage and allergy care. Most newer vacuum models use more than one filter. Please refer to your manufacturer manual for further assistance on locating your filter.
When do I need to change my HEPA Ray Filter? The EPA recommends sticking to the manufacturer`s recommendations, with most brands typically recommending a filter replacement every 60 to 90 days.
HEPA filters are not designed to be washed and reused. Doing so will cause damage to the fibers which makes the filter ineffective and it will become void of its job. Once a filter has reached the maximum capacity of harmful particles, it will need to be replaced with a fresh, new one.
The recommendation for routine HEPA filter replacement is every 10 years.
Although it depends on the specific filter you have, as a rule of thumb, replaceable HEPA filters should be replaced every 6-12 months, depending on air quality and environmental factors. Carbon pre-filters should be replaced every 3 months, depending on air quality and environmental factors.
Many vacuums have not one but two filters. The pre-motor or air inlet filter can be found before airflow travels past the motor. This filter is designed to catch dirt and dust to protect the vacuum cleaner`s internal parts.
Vacuuming can release and re-introduce pollutants back into your air, while washing the filters could potentially cause mold to grow if the filters are not dried fully. The only way to keep your filters fresh is to replace them regularly.
These portable systems often contain essential filtration media such as a HEPA filter. However, not all “HEPA” filters are made the same and are often rated to capture particulate of varying micron sizes.
Only wash HEPA filters that are designated as “washable.” If the HEPA filter is permanent, it likely won`t need to be replaced for 10+ years. If not, you`ll clean it for a few months and then replace it. Some HEPA filters last longer than others, so check your user manual for the best guidance.
HEPA filters are thought to degrade over time both during proper storage and during normal operational service; however, the rate at which the filters degrade remains unknown.
Don`t dispose of your old home air filter indoors—take it to your outside trash can and toss it there. While you may be using the plastic bag to seal the dust and debris from your filter inside, bags can puncture or accidentally have holes poked in them.
A legitimate certified HEPA filter should be labeled and signed off, so that you know it has been tested and passed inspection to ensure that it meets the necessary health and safety standards.
Traditional HEPA filters typically fail because of the poor mechanical strength of the media, a failure due to physical contact or degradation from caustic chemicals.
HEPA filters are limited to particulates. There are harmful gases and fumes that may just pass through a HEPA filter. HEPA filters may cause air to become too dry. Finally, some HEPA filters may produce ozone, which is an unhealthy gas that can irritate the lungs.
HEPA filter systems cost $1,000 to $4,000 with installation and are the most effective at removing dust and allergens from the air. *Installation not required.
Leave your air purifier on all day, if possible. It will remove dirt, allergens, smoke, and odors from your indoor air. The longer you can leave it on, the cleaner your air will be. There`s no clear downside to leaving your air purifier on 24/7.
Can I soak my filter in vinegar? If you are cleaning a foam filter, you can add a few drops of vinegar to the water you are cleaning it with. However, if you are cleaning a cartridge or HEPA vacuum filter, do not use vinegar.
If the filter isn`t clean, it can impact the performance of the vacuum. Dirty vacuum filters can restrict airflow so the suction won`t be as strong.
When you use a vacuum cleaner without a HEPA filter, these particles are stirred up and put back out into the air through your vacuum`s exhaust. Regular filters can`t remove these harmful particulates and this puts the people in your home at risk.
ULPA Filter Vacuum

So, if you`re looking for the absolute best in indoor air quality, vacuums with ULPA filters are the best on the market. ULPA stands for `ultra-low particulate air,` and vacuums with these filters are perfect in environments that demand an extremely high standard of cleanliness and hygiene.

HEPA: Uses mechanical filtration in which particles are pulled through and trapped in a HEPA filter that is certified to capture up to 99.97% of the following microscopic airborne allergens and particles: dust, pollen, pet dander, dust mite debris and smoke¹ . The pre-filters and HEPA filters are replaceable.
Do not use vacuum filtration to filter a solid from a liquid if it is the liquid that you want, and if the liquid is low boiling. Any solvent which boils at about 125 degrees or lower will boil off under the reduced pressure in the vacuum flask. To perform a vacuum filtration, clamp the flask securely to a ring stand.
Soapy water and a rag will do the trick. There`s no substitute for time. After cleaning the air filter with kerosene or a filter-specific application, let it dry naturally. Following that step, be sure to wash the filter with soap and warm water.

.Hello,
I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. Typically the top filter of which is the sponge is washable but the HEPA filter is not, it can be brushed off and vacuum off with another vacuum, but the best filtration is to replace the HEPA filter and to wash the sponge filter, if the sponge filter get to bad then replace the sponge filter as well. Or, you can check with your local vacuum cleaner dealer in your area or to contact the manufacturer’s website and or phone #. So if you need further assistance, please feel free to contact your local vacuum cleaner dealer in your area or in the yellow pages, or contact the factory phone number or website to further assist you with your questions.

Our problem with our Rainbow E Series is that it has sucked water up and blown it out through the lower part of the hepa filter, making the filter wet and dirty. This had happened before and the repair shop did not see any problems with the machine, so we replaced the filter and were very carful not to overfill the tank and to change the water often. Now it has happened again and ruined another filter. Do you know what could be causing this issue? Can the filter be cleaned or will a new one be

.

2. You can easily set the filter out to try as long as there is NO WET ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS, if so, you will be facing electrical damage
.

3. Once you have performed a natural or sun dry on the old filter, ensure to check your unit for anything that may have caused the back clog.
.

4. Back clogs for your model are often times associated with a BUILD UP of dirt and HAIR. YOU may always use pressure air for example at a gas station to flush out the build up.
.

5. Other occasions, users accidently build the vac WRONG causing continual backup and water going where it is NOT suppose to go.

My Electrolux guardian C135 vac has lost suction. replacing the bag does nothing. removing the HEPA filter has no effect – what do you suggest? Will a replacement HEPA filter make any significant difference?
ANSWER : No you have a clog in the hose, wand or at the power head. Remove the hose wand and power head from the the vacuum. Turn on the vacuum, put the palm of your hand over the hole in front, you should feel plunty of suction. Then replace just the hose and put the palm of your hand over the end of the hose. If you do not have suction the clog is in the hose. You can try putting the hose on the blower port to blow out the clog or use the wire from a coat hanger. If you have suction, then add just the wand and repeat. If you have suction, then the clog is in the neck of power head, you will have to use a coat hanger to clear it.
