Vacuums\015 The roller on my Dirt Devil hand vac isn’t turning. First I thought it was the belt, so I changed it. But then I realized there is a lot of dirt & grit between the end of the wood roller and the octagonal metal ends not allowing the roller to turn properly. I’ve cleaned it out before using a sewing pin to pry out some of that dirt. This time it helped a little, but is there a way to pull off those metal ends to clean the roller? Thanks for your help!\015

How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

Remove the brushroll and clean all hair, string, and lint from the brushroll bearings. If the vacuum cleaner brush still doesn`t spin after you clean the brushroll, consider replacing the brushroll.
Check the power unit reset button located above the power cord. Pressing the button should restore operation. NOTE: The reset button is located on the upper left-hand side of the unit where the low voltage wires connect to the unit. It is most noticeable when popped out after the breaker has been tripped.
Clear the brush roll of any hair and debris and inspect by placing it on its end and spin. The brush should spin freely. If it doesn`t spin; it may be time to replace.
Check for a plugged hose:

Plugged vacuum hoses are sometimes the reason for a loss in suction. Hoses can get clogged with hair, dust bunnies, string, or anything else that can`t pass through the other end of the hose. Airways inside the machine should be looked at as well. Wherever there is an air passage, check it.

A Revolving Brush Roll Greatly Enhances Carpet Cleaning

These brush rolls revolve at a very high speed, agitating the carpet fibers in the process. The effect of this is to loosen dirt and move it toward the top, aiding in its removal from the carpet fibers.

Almost every time that the brush stops turning, it is because of hair wrapped around the brush roller. You will burn out the belt if you use it too long in this mode. Your only fix is to take it apart and and clean it (and cut any hair stuck in it in the process).
Check that the vacuum cleaner is plugged into a working power outlet and that fuses and breakers don`t need resetting. An activated thermal cut-out due to a blockage is the next most likely cause of the problem. Check for blockages in the hose and filters, and remove any obstructions that you find.
Check both ends of the tube for any debris that may clog the machine. Make sure to empty dirt bin and clean the filters if they are dirty. If you experience no suction when using a tool, remove the tool and check each opening for clogging.
The rotating brushes move counterclockwise together, trapping and absorbing the dirt that is deep in the carpet fibers.
Inspecting the Vacuum Commutator for Motor Brush Problems

Test that by turning the motor off and pushing on the center shaft, the armature. If it has any play, besides spinning, then replace the motor. If solid then replace the brushes – motor brush replacement instructions.

Most cases of a jammed or stuck brush bar are quick and easy to fix, simply pulling the debris gently from the brush bar. Alternatively, if you need to clear a problematic blockage, you can take the brush bar out of the housing easily, for quick maintenance.
If you checked your brush roll, floor setting, and belt but your brush roll is still not spinning, that means you probably need a Shark micro switch replacement. This small switch tells the vacuums brush when to start spinning.

Roller brush is not spinning

Check to make sure the vacuum is switched to the correct mode. The switch should be in the Power and Brushroll mode to make the roller spin. If it is in just the power mode the roller will not move. The brushroll indicator light should be green when working.

Dirt Devil Extreme Quick Vac – Won’t turn on
ANSWER : Check that the filters are completely clear and not blocked – especially the top filter on top of the bin assembly. If its clogged completely brush it free of dirt and then reassemble. Make sure the inner cone filter and mesh filter is also completely clean. Then check the hose and main dust channel – something is clogged that makes this machine overheat and stop working – and often with this model (Hoover also make it in the UK under the Alyx name) its down to clogged filters or small clogs of dust in the dust channels. .
.Don’t forget to rate, thanks.

Riccar model rad.7 upright (radiance). roller brush won’t turn and red roller brush indicator is on. roller will turn easily by hand and belt is in place. how do i fix this?
ANSWER : As you already know, the red brush indicator light indicates that the brush roll has stopped turning, usually because an object has become stuck in the brush roll. When that happens you should turn the machine off (unplug it also for safety), remove the obstruction and turn the vac back on. That should have cleared the light and allowed your brush to turn again.
. Occasionally, you will get debris in the brush roll end caps and the brush roll will spin slower making the sensor think there is an obstruction. You can remove the brush roll, pop the end caps off and clean out any debris to see if that helps.
. If none of the above worked it is possible that the brush roll sensor is bad or the circuit board in the machine is bad. You’ll need a Riccar service center for that. The good news is your Radiance has a 6 year warranty.
