How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

Pulsing red: Charging, too low to start cleaning.
Light Ring Colors

White – I`m awake and everything is normal. Blue – I`m doing something special. Red – There`s a problem.

You can easily check the status of the battery in the iRobot® HOME App. A battery icon will be displayed in the top-right corner, indicating the current status of the battery.
Flashing red indicates a problem with battery charging. Either the charger is bad, or the charging circuit in your Roomba is bad.
The light on the Home Base® will go on for approximately four (4) seconds and then turn off and remain off while the robot continues to charge. The light ring on your robot will illuminate to signal that it is charging.
Roomba® should charge in the following manner: If you are using a charger, the charger should have a solid green power indicator when it is plugged into an outlet. If you are using a Home Base®, the power indicator should blink approximately once every four (4) seconds when plugged into the charger or outlet.
If the green light on your Roomba charger goes off, it indicates that your Roomba is fully charged now. So, it doesn`t require more energy from the power outlet. It demonstrates that your vacuum is ready to use, and you don`t have to connect it to a wall charger more.
With proper care, your robot`s battery should last at least 2-3 years before it needs to be replaced.
Charging time under normal conditions is at least 2 hours. For best results, use only the battery type compatible with your robot and ensure that it is an authentic iRobot Lithium Ion/NiMH battery that comes with Roomba or purchased from iRobot authorized dealers.
For the Roomba`s nickel-based (not lithium ion like smartphones) batteries, it`s best to keep the unit charging whenever you`re not using it. However, don`t leave it in its dock for days at a time — lots of vacuuming will keep its battery healthy.
You can put the RoboVac on the charging base/auto-empty station though it`s fully charged. The battery protection circuit prevents the battery from being overcharged. Once the RoboVac is fully charged, it will stop drawing power. In this way, the vacuum can always be ready and cleaned on schedule daily.
If its battery gets low before finishing a cleaning cycle, Roomba® automatically returns to the Home Base®/Clean Base™ to recharge, providing that it was started from its Home Base®/Clean Base™.
Re: 530 Battery flashing orange

When this happens the charging system in the Roomba recognizes that a “special battery recovery” program needs to be executed and will indicate this by flashing the Clean indicator at 120 interruptions per minute (IPMs) for the next 16 hours during the battery recovery program.

iRobot Roomba vacuums can operate even with simple ambient light, but not in total darkness. What may help with either the i7 or s9 robots is to run a training mission and/or clean your floors with the closet light on until your floor plan map is complete.
Con: They can be less reliable and harder to fix

Not only do they need more regular maintenance (cleaning out wheels and brushes, for example), you`ll need to replace the battery every couple of years, and they can be harder and more expensive to fix.

Roomba E, I-Series, and S-Series Replacement Batteries

The Roomba E and I-Series robots use the same type of battery. So all of these are interchangeable. Consumers will have options to go with an original iRobot branded battery or a replacement. Check the options below for more information.

If your Roomba® i Series Robot Vacuum is not turning on or is not able to charge, rebooting your robot tends to solve most related issues. To reboot your Roomba: Press and hold the CLEAN button for 20 seconds. After you release the button, the light ring will show a white clockwise swirl while it reboots.
Most commonly this means your adapter is beginning to fail, or you have damaged the power socket on the side of the computer where the charger plugs in. In more rare cases you could have experienced a failure in the charge circuit on the motherboard.
A: Yes, I do. My Roomba 780 runs at it`s schedule time, 10am, then sometimes, I`ll run it again in the evening if I have a particular area that needs to be done (I do my master suite, guest suites & upstairs each separately).
It told TechRadar, it largely comes down to personal cleaning preferences. “We often hear from our Roomba customers with pets, kids, or who live in areas with a high-allergen count and dust and debris, that the greatest benefit for them is that they can run Roomba as often as they need,” it said.
Usually, we suggest customers put device on dock all the time if it is used every week. After battery is fully charged, only mother board of device is charged and customers don`t need worry battery is fully charged for a long time and may decrease the lifespan.
Light Ring while idle

Pulsing red: Charging, too low to start cleaning. Solid red: Error (tap Button for details). Red sweep towards rear: Bin full. Blue clockwise spinner: In Wi-Fi pairing mode.

Scooba battery light turns red as soon as irobot starts
ANSWER : Do you leave the battery on charge long enough? Try 4-hours up to overnight. If so, then the battery is probably at the end of it’s useful life. Getting a new battery depends on cost versus life expectancy of the robot and whether it does the job you want it to do.

I have iRobot Roomba 4210 and I have a problem with charge battery. The battery is new. When I charging a battery in other iRobot Roomba the battery was full charged. When I charging in my iRobot Roomba the battery was empty. My fast charger is OK.
ANSWER : The charging circuit on the main board is fried. This is a common issue. You need some good electronic repair skills, and equipment, to replace the problem components

Press the power button on – good got a green light (new battery)
press the clean button – got a green light

iRobot runs for a couple of seconds and stops, then starts, then stops. After two or three times I now have a red light on for the Status.

All of the wheels seem to be clean. I used compressed air to clean the underside. But still have the start stop problem.

ANSWER : How many times does the red light blink before it pauses?

Scooba 5800 Power button Red Blinking
ANSWER : You probably have the manual, but here’s the link to the Scooba 5800 manual anyway – just in case this would be useful to you: –> ..http://www.irobot.com/images/homesupport/5800_Scooba_Manual.pdf ...You could use a voltmeter to check the battery, but only a few months use shouldn’t be enough to wear it out. If you don’t have a load-tester to verify the battery’s load-capacity, then you can check the voltage drop. (Assuming you can get it to contact the Scooba’s circuits.) ..To do this, just check the battery voltage, apply a load by inserting it in the machine and turning it on, then check the battery voltage again. An excessive drop in voltage may indicate the battery needs replacing. ..However, the red blinking light is Scooba’s indicator that it doesn’t detect the battery at all. The first thing to do in this case is to clean the electrical contacts on the battery and in the Scooba. ..Use a damp cloth and a bit of toothpaste to rub the contacts clean on the battery and in the machine. (Toothpaste has mild abrasives in it and will clean the electric contacts without damaging them.) Make sure that both the battery and the Scooba are clean and dry before re-inserting the battery. ..Also, if the electric contacts in the machine are flexible matal tabs then verify that the tabs are standing up high enough to make good contact with the battery contacts. ..Hopefully the battery just needs it’s contacts cleaned for your unit to work, but test the battery if you are sure that they are clean and seated properly to the contacts in the machine. If the battery appears to be failing, then contact www.irobot.com to cheack and see if they are still covered under your machine’s warranty. ...Hope this helps! 🙂

I have a dyson canniter stow away vacuum. i’ve had it for 2 years and it just started having a problem. when i turn it on the motor starts just fine but the vacuum head does not turn on. Yet when i push it forward it trys to start and turns on for a second and turn off – almost like the connector isn’t connecting the hose to the head very well anymore.
ANSWER : Hi, After reading you’re problem, the symptom’s are just like you said. Its just a matter of checking the connections. The connection where it plugs into the head it self. When you push forward the forward motion and down pressure makes the connection for a few seconds. Anywhere you have a power connection double check it to see if it is loose. I wouldn’t think it is a serious problem, just a matter of looking it over very good. You should have no problem in finding the solution. When you first turn it on is when the head should also turn on, so, that’s where I would check first where the hose connects to the motor. Move the hose and head around to see if it trys to start and see if you can locate the problem. Keep me posted on what you have found and we can go from there.

My purple Dyson Animal (without the ball) isn’t working correctly. When I turn it on, the red power light, as well as the medium pile buttons flashes. When I first turn it on, the brush rotates for 3 to 5 seconds, then once I start moving the vacuum, it stops and that’s when the lights start flashing. I’ve checked the filters, they are dry and installed correctly. What could be the problem?
ANSWER : I need help repairing my Dyson. I cannot push the buttons down to select Short pile/Medium pile or bare floor. The buttons will not push down at all. It will not allow me to select anything. I have very short pile carpet so it does not pick up that well.

I have the IROBOT discovery that just got a new battery. IT ran great! As the battery was dying, I put it into the home base. The “brick” is green, the home base has two green lights and the on/off pulsates red. It never charges though. Eventually the red light stops pulsating. Customer service said to reset it, clean the metal, and nothing works! They told me to just buy another one. The problem is that I know it was working! Help!
ANSWER : The best thing that you can do is take the charger into somewhere that can test it for the proper output voltage. It should be somewhere very close to 22 volts with no fluctuation. The charger is the easiest thing to test in this case.
