How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

First, you need to vacuum up all loose dirt from the sofa surface. Next, spray water and cleaning agent evenly on the stained surface. For heavy dirt, spray and leave to work for at least 5 minutes. Then place the nozzle on the surface of upholstery and slowly vacuum up the moisture from the cleaning mixture.
The best method of cleaning carpets is usually steam cleaning, which removes over 90% of dirt and bacteria from carpeting. Dry cleaning carpeting is also effective for ensuring carpets are ready for foot traffic as quickly as possible.
Well, carpet cleaning involves cleaning carpets made of wool or another natural fiber, while upholstery cleaning refers to cleaning a piece of furniture`s fabric. Upholstery is primarily made of synthetic materials, such as polyester, nylon, or acrylic.
Upholstery Tool: The upholstery tool has a small, flat head and powerful suction, this attachment works well on fabric surfaces such as mattresses, couches, chairs and other fabric based pieces.
Steam cleaning is one of the best ways to clean upholstery because the warm moisture lifts stains without releasing too much moisture into the fabric and padding. The main elements of steam cleaning that make it so effective are: Moisture.
Steam cleaning removes stubborn tough stains, dirt, grease and more while also sanitizing surfaces by removing allergens and pathogens. One of the most useful applications of steam cleaning units is to clean upholstery, fabric furniture and mattresses.
Upholstered Surfaces

Use the upholstery attachment on mattresses and fabric surfaces. Work in a horizontal or vertical motion from top to bottom. Use the crevice tool in the tight corners and seams. Use the dust brush on leather furniture to reduce any risk of scratching.

Corner Cleaner

The narrow, angled crevice tool should be the go-to vacuum accessory for cleaning areas that the vacuum is too bulky to reach. Slide it along baseboards, between vents, and in other tight corners to pick up dust and debris. You can also use this attachment to clean under couch cushions.

One most certainly can use a carpet cleaner to clean a couch. Carpet cleaners usually come with an upholstery attachment that is gentle enough to clean the sofa and get into all the nicks and folds. The same cleaning solution can be used; the only determining factor is the sofa`s material.
Mix 1/2 cup of rubbing alcohol, 1/2 cup of white vinegar, and about 1 cup of water. Make sure to give it a good shake before applying it to your upholstery. If you`re dealing with tough stains, you can add a little less water to your mixture.
In conclusion, when it comes to cleaning carpets, there are several methods available. Hot water extraction, dry cleaning, and bonnet cleaning are three of the most common methods used by professionals.
Set the vacuum to the proper height for your type of carpet to get the strongest suction. Vacuum slowly and go over high-traffic areas several times for the best results. Use a lint roller for quick clean-up of crumbs. Run a rubber-edged squeegee over the carpet to collect pet hair.
Upholstery cleaning generally refers to the cleaning of fabric furniture, while steam cleaning can refer to the cleaning of many different surfaces such as curtains as well. Upholstery cleaning typically uses a detergent or solvent to clean the surface, while steam cleaning uses heat and water to clean the surface.
For vinyl upholstery, use an all-purpose cleaner. And for cloth seats, rely on an upholstery cleaner if you have one.
If the cleaner is still not spraying despite the water and detergent tanks being full, there may be a bubble of air stuck in the pump or the hose. To fix this, you need to turn the cleaner on and lower the hose down to the floor. Next, prime the pump by holding down the trigger for up to 1 minute.
Upholstery fabric is heavier, thicker, and stiffer than drapery fabric. This gives it a more substantial feel, though it doesn`t always mean it`s more durable than drapery fabric. The patterns of upholstery fabrics are created when the fabric is woven.
Upholstery is the materials—which include fabric, padding, webbing, and springs—that make up the soft coverings of chairs, sofas, and other furniture.
Several lengths of yarn ( in a single color or multiple colors) are braided together to create trim that is used for pillows, window treatments and furniture. It often has a “lip” of fabric that makes it possible to sew directly into a seam.
Welting, also called piping, is a type of fabric-covered trim commonly used on upholstered furniture. It outlines the fabric seams along the edges of furniture, helping to distinguish the contours of the piece.
However, not all materials can be steamed, and the method has its limits. “Avoid steaming suede, waxed fabrics, and anything plastic to prevent melting,” cautions Whiting. “When an extra-crisp finish is desired for durable cotton and linen items such as sheets, dress shirts and khakis, opt for the iron instead.”
Vacuum your couch so you`re not rubbing in dirt or debris while cleaning. In the bucket, mix about 2 cups of distilled water with 1 tablespoon of dishwashing liquid and 1 tablespoon of vinegar. Dampen a microfiber cloth with your cleaning solution. Gently blot any stained areas with the cloth.
So, where does the dirt go when you steam clean? Actually, it doesn`t go anywhere. Instead, the heat and vapour of steam cleaning ensure that all the unwanted substances or stains are fully broken down and easy to get rid of.
There are two primary causes of carpet re-spotting: Wicking and Residue. One originates below the carpet fibers, in the backing or pad of the carpet. The other originates in the carpet fibers themselves. Stains that resurface as a result of wicking originate below the carpet fibers.
Steaming is touted as an excellent method of removing stains and odors from clothing, upholstery, rugs, and other fabrics.

Roomba keeps saying clean brushes yet are clean!
ANSWER : Make sure you take off the little cap at the end (the one that spins — just grab it and pull it straight off) and clean under it too. The rest of the brush may look perfectly clean but what happens is that hair gets stuck under spinning cap and, like a slowly growing washer, it pushes the whole brush toward the gear box. When it gets pushed over enough, the large yellow ring starts to rub against the side of the brush deck making it harder for the motor to turn the brush and you get that “remove and clean brushes” message.

ANSWER : Hello,
.
.Here’s a link to a very helpful video that shows you step by step on how to access and replace the belt on your machine. When the brushes stop spinning, but the rest of the machine works fine, this is a tell-tale sign that your belt has gone bad.

My roomba won’t go forward; it just rotates right ~90 degrees and then left ~90 degrees. I’ve cleaned the brushes, taken it apart and cleaned the brush gears, popped off the front wheel and cleaned the hair off that, taken off the front bumper panel and cleaned off the cliff sensors. Please help!
ANSWER : Compare your Roomba to the video on http://www.eesolutions.ca and look for the fix.

Bissell will spray water when set to water rinse, but as soon as it is set to light, normal, or heavy cleaning, there is no spray. I have tried priming but to no avail. I put plain water in the solution tank to test without ay success. It is like it loses it’s prime whenever you try to use a solution mix. Once you set it back to water rinse only and go through the priming steps, it is OK. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
ANSWER :

Please check the following with liquid in both tanks.
.

.

– Check to see if the machine will spray through the hose with the setting on tools. If it does, the pump is fine. Continue troubleshooting.
.

Check for debris on spray tips. Clean them with a soft brush (on old tooth brush works well). The spray tips may be lifted out for easier access.
.

– Ensure the tank lid is properly attached to the bottom of the tank. To attach this properly, remove the Water Tank from the machine. Hook the front window onto the lip of the bottom container and then allow the window with lid to cover the complete tank. Secure the latch on the back of the bottom tank to the back of the tank lid. THE TANK LID CANNOT BE ATTACHED PROPERLY IF THE BOTTOM TANK IS ALREADY INSTALLED IN THE MACHINE.
– Check the bottom of the Water Tank and the Formula Tank to make sure each has a red auto-load gasket attached. Make sure the Water Tank and the Formula Tank are seated properly. Depress the x on this gasket to ensure this depresses and release back out. Liquid from the tank should dispense.
.

– Remove the handle completely and re-attach. Once the handle is re-attached, re-attempt to spray.
.

.

If the machine continues to not spray, check the following:
.

REMOVE THE COLLECTION TANK:
• Make sure the unit is set to water rinse
• Remove the smart mix bottle and fill it with water only
• Place the smart mix bottle into the collection tank reservoir
• Run the unit and try to spray. If the machine sprays, you will be able to see the water level decreasing in the smart mix bottle and you will need to replace the bottom tank. It is possibly warped.

Roomba Discovery My Roomba turns on and moves but the brushes won’t turn. Someone told me that I had forgotten to put in the yellow and black end bearings, but I did. Help, I miss my Roomba
I have a Roomba 530, I have had it for 2 weeks and really loved it. I have followed all the cleaning instructions etc.. Then the Roomba wanted it’s brushes cleaning “please clean Roombas brushes” So thinking that something was stuck I removed and cleaned the brushes, (yellow tabs on and in place by the way)
ANSWER : I read somewhere that you need to clear the software in case there is a glitch. To do this, take the battery out and then, simultaneously hold down the “spot” and “clean” buttons for 30 seconds. Replace battery. This has worked for my Discovery model.

Isn’t picking up lint. Will pick up other things like flecks of paper but will not get any fuzz or fibrous material off any rug no matter what the setting. This is a recent problem. Have owned the vacuum for awhile and never seen this issue before. Is it an easy fix? I’ve cleaned the brush, cleaned out the filters, cleaned the dirt tank. Nothing changed.
ANSWER : Is the brush turning on the bottom of the machine ? If not It could be cloged
up with stuff or the belt could be worn on it and it will turn but as soon as it contacts the floor it will stop turning. The belt is easy to replace by removing screws on the bottom of machine and a plate will come off . The belt can be pulled off and a new one installed by stretching it over the shaft on the motor and one on the brush assembly some may have a cogged wheel. JUST MAKE SURE IT IS UNPLUGED BEFORE DOING THIS
