How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

The most common cause of no power is the machine overheating and cutting out. In this case once the vacuum cleaner loses power leave it for at least half an hour and then try turning it back on again. If it comes back on again after an hour then clean your filters and check for blockages.
The DC07, released in 2001 was the first implementation of Root Cyclone technology into a cleaner.
One of the first things to do when your Dyson vacuum cleaner keeps starting and stopping is to empty the bin. It may be full, or the machine may simply perceive it as too full to continue working. Dyson vacuum cleaners require constant airflow through them to work, and a full bin can stop this from happening.
A clog is a common (perhaps the most common) reason that a Dyson unit loses suction. They have a number of choke points in the airflow paths. Some considerations follow: Hoses: because of their often rough inner surfaces and inevitable bends, hoses are prime locations for clogs.
If your dyson vacuum isn`t turning on, don`t panic – there are a couple possible causes. It could simply be that the vacuum overheated and shut itself off. If that is the case, wait 24 hours and turn it back on. However, another problem with dysons are failed power switches.
If there is a strong burning smell coming from the motor area of your Dyson DC14 or DC07 then it is most likely that your motor has burnt out.
There are two filters on a DC07, the first is the pre-motor filter, which are washable and is recommended by Dyson to be washed at least every 6 months. The pre motor filter also acts as a protection to the motor, trapping the smallest of dirt or debris from travelling to the motor.
Check Your Battery & Charger:

Batteries don`t last forever depending on age and use. You may need to buy a new battery if your Dyson vacuum is turning on and off after only a few minutes of use.

It`s possible there`s a power consumption issue, with there just not being enough residual charge to run the machine. A new battery should fix this. My other thought is that it`s overheating. If too much power is pushed through the motor, which MAX power does, it could stop after a few seconds if it become hot.
We recommend replacing your air purifier filter every 12 months. That`s because over time, filters can get clogged with pollutants, and even let unpleasant odors back into the room.
Check the machine

Check the plug and power cord for signs of damage. Leave the machine at least 5 minutes since it was last working to cool down. Try the machine in a different plug socket. Change the fuse in the machine`s plug.

A Dyson vacuum cleaner has a lifespan of around 10 years. This is considerably longer than most other vacuums. So, if you`re looking for a high-quality vacuum cleaner that will last you for a long time, a Dyson could be a good choice. However, remember that Dyson vacuums are expensive.
Check that the vacuum cleaner is plugged into a working power outlet and that fuses and breakers don`t need resetting. An activated thermal cut-out due to a blockage is the next most likely cause of the problem. Check for blockages in the hose and filters, and remove any obstructions that you find.

Hooked everything up per directions. I plugged it in to the closest electrical outlet and nothing happened. The lights did not light up, the connected wall control and sensors leds do not light up. It appears the unit doesn’t have power. The electrical outlet socket is fine as everything else I plug into it works fine. I have tried every other electrical outlet available. The unit won’t power on from any outlet, and all of those outlets run other things, like power tools an refrigerators
ANSWER : Dear Davehibshman,

Firstly; dismantle the plug and replace the fuse with the same rating as the one you have just taken out. Replace the plug cover, put the plug into the socket and try again. If this doesnt work, there may be a problem with the internal fuse (if one is fitted). Two choices here, either refer this unit to a qualified service personnel/ the place where you got it from, or do the job yourself (which will save you a whole bunch of cash). In your circumstances, I would take it back to the place you got it and ask them to put the fault right, or replace the unit completely; if it is past its warranty or guarantee time, then get back to me with a make and model number of the unit, and I will give you step-by-step instructions on how to solve this.

Yours sincerely

Shorted at the outlet
ANSWER : Dyson company is aware of switch failures in their vacuums. It is a engineering flaw and even if your Dyson is no longer within the warranty period, call them and they may replace the switch for you for free. Do not use the vacuum!!! You can shock yourself or start an electrical fire.

The unit will not turn on at wall outlet. the unit works fine at other outlets
ANSWER : Check the outlet to make sure you have power going to it.

On my M&S Air Vac AV425 central vaccuum system, the system usually turns on by inserting the vaccuum hose into one of the vaccuum outlets. However, it now runs continuously. I am able to turn it off only by unplugging the vaccuum from the electrical outlet. I would like to know how to trouble shoot the problem or how to find someone who services Air Vac systems in the Bridgewater, New jersey area.

Won’t work My Eureka Mighty Mite 3670 Bagged, was working fine, and we unplugged it to switch to another outlet in another room and it just stopped. We tried several other outlets and it just won’t turn on. We thought maybe it got hot because we had been using it for a while and we let it rest for a while and then changed the bag just to be sure, although it was not full. But it still will not turn on. Any ideas?

.1 Other User Has the Same Problem.Comment by Guest, posted on Jun 06, 2008.I had the same problem today. Have a 9 amp model I bought 10 years ago which I never use. It has been sitting for years. Today put in new bag and ran it continuously for 45 minutes. After I turned it of it wouldn’t restart. Tried another outlet and wouldn’t restart. Felt canister at back and motor housing was hot so I thought I might need to let it cool down. After letting vacuum cool off for 10 minutes it restarted. All I can assume is that the vacuum has a built in overheat sensor on the motor. . .Hello,
I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. Eureka Mighty Mite #3670 Bagged Canister. I have the same type Mighty Mite Canister and from what you are saying the must be some type of heat sensor that is shutting off the motor to protect it from excessive heat. Al of the old ones have had lower amps and did not needs the heat sensor but once the bag is full and the filter clogged; they will shut down as well. They all use a plastic hose to clean with and that even gets hot sometimes. So I suggest that you get an owner’s manual from the manufacturer on you particular model so that id if happens again, you will be prepared. So if you need further assistance, please feel free to contact your local vacuum cleaner dealer in your area or in the yellow pages, or contact the factory phone number or website to further assist you with your questions.

Bissell Proheat I have a Bissell ProHeat 12 amp 6 cleaning brush upright and it won’t turn on anymore. We have done the basics like making sure the outlets work, etc. Changed it around to different outlets. It is not turning on. Any idea?
ANSWER : Things to check are the cord, switch, and the motor.

Kenmoor Progressive 360 seems to have a short somewhere between the handle and the head of the vacuum. I believe the short is were the handle meets the wand. Help!
ANSWER : With a multi meter set to ohms, back probe one wire at a time from the motor to the switch while shaking it check for an open. if none are found continue this be on the switch until the open is located. Make repairs as needed.

Kenmore progressive upright filter is being bypassed, clogging screen at outlet. Tried new filter, no change. 7 or 8 passes with the vacuum and the screen at outlet gets clogged.
ANSWER : Take the filter out and hold your hand over the filter connection. Turn it on and see where the air is being bypassed. What you see should suggest the fix.
