Aside from being somewhat easier to coil and manage, the smaller diameter hose has an effect on performance as well. As you shrink the diameter of your opening, two things occur simultaneously. Your CFM (air volume) drops and your water lift (suction power) increases.

Most common size is 32mm internal diameter (approximately 38mm to 39mm external diameter). Other less common vacuum cleaner hose sizes are 27mm, 35mm, 36mm, 38mm, 40mm, 51mm and come in a variety of colours.

The suction lift of an ordinary centrifugal pump is limited to 5-6 m in practice, and it is further reduced if a larger length of the suction pipe is used. Hence, a suitable length and larger size of suction pipe is desirable for better performance of the pump.

Friction pushes against the flow, resulting in pressure loss as the pipe length increases. Pipe length also factors in fittings, which increase the “length” input for the equation. Velocity of fluid (v): As flow velocity increases, pressure loss also increases and efficiency decreases.

Pipe length: The longer the fluid has to travel, the more friction it needs to overcome. Therefore, pressure drop has a positive correlation with length; if length is the only variable between two otherwise identical pipes, pressure drop will be higher in the longer one.
For example, a 100-foot, 1” hose delivering 100 CFM at 90 psi will result in a 3.35 psi pressure drop. If that same hose is tripled to 300 feet, the pressure drop is 10.1 psi, which means the air is now pressurized to only 80 psi.

Hose length is much more important than you may have realized for a hydraulic system. The longer the hose is, the more potential there is for pressure drops. Just as with inner diameters that are too small, this is because there is more contact between the fluid and interior walls which creates friction.

Torn Hose The hose on my Dyson is torn right at the top where the the accessories connect. I was able to take the connection apart and shorten the hose, but I don’t know what to use to reattach the hose to the black fitting. It looks like it was glued…not sure what kind. Any ideas?

Hose Problem The hose broke just above the cuff on the inlet end of the hose.  I found that the hose doesn’t thread into this cuff but appears to be heat bonded in some way. Can I get a replacement cuff or do I have to replace the hose?

My bissell proheat upright steam cleaner is spraying out through the attachments just fine, but will not spray to the floor when using upright. we’ve taken it apart to find that there is no water at all going through one of the hoses, but it appears the hose is connected behind the on/off and heat switches, we can’t seem to figure out how to get in there to replace that hose….any suggestions on how to access this?? just curious how you would get in to replace the hose, we know it is the hose..

No suction Hello – any help with this would be much appreciated!

I just changed the bag and filters. The machine runs, seems normal, but there is no suction. There is no blockage of the hose, as indicated by the fact that that little viewer window above where the hose connects to the unit is not showing the red portion that it shows when there is something blocking the hose (god, this is hard to describe!).

If I disconnect the hose and put my hand over the hole, I feel some suction. But

ANSWER : Well, it actually sounds like there is a blockage. Try removing your hose and dropping something through it, like a quqrter. If it comes through, no clog. If it is clogged, I believe that machine has a blower on the upper part of the cleaner (maybe in the bag compartment towards the top. You can take out the filter holder and plug the hose in there and run the unit . Does the blockage come out? If not, Try shaking the hose, or you can put a stiff wire in it to try to free it. Do not run water through it. If there is no blockage at all, then you will probably need to take it to a service center. But I am pretty confident that we are looking at a clog situation. I HAVE A BISSELL PROHEAT CARPET CLEANER 7920 I DISSEMBLY IT TO CLEAN IT. Clogged hose… I have a clog in my hose, probably a sock, I have pushed it through to the hard plastic handle end of the hose, help! can the plastic handle wand be disconnected from the hose to remove the clog??? Thank you

.Low suction, poor pickup, or no suction may be due to a clog in the vacuum cleaner. If you notice a change in the sound of the motor or a reduction in the spinning action in the Dirt Container, check for clogs. Unplug cleaner from electrical outlet. Empty Dirt Container. Check Upper Tank and Louvers for build up or clogs. Check to make sure Louvers are installed correctly. To unlock the Louvers, grasp the rim and turn toward the left. Pull straight down to remove. If the Louvers are missing or not locked into place, check and clear the tube in the center of the Dirt Container. Remove the Twist ‘n Snap Hose from the vacuum by turning to the left. Check the Suction Inlet, Hose and Hose Wand for clogs. Remove any clogs from the hose using a long, narrow object. Check the Foot Hose for clogs. If needed, remove the screw attaching the Hose Wand Base to the vacuum. Straighten the Foot Hose and unclog with a long, narrow object. If the clog persists, then check the Rotating Floor Brush the Air Passageway for obstructions.
